In 1992, I sat on a coach for 36 hours for something that lasted 9.96 seconds.  Q - What was I doing? A - Watching Lynford Christie win Gold for Great Britain in the 100m final at the Barcelona Olympic Games!Just an illustration to show that all kinds of people do all kinds of things around the Olympics that you wouldn’t even imagine!Traidcraft is a sponsor of More Than Gold, an organisation set up to encourage churches to seize the moment, to get right behind the Torch Relay, the Olympics and DO SOMETHING in their communities. So it’s like one massive Jubilee celebration snaking its way round the country! Traidcraft is too small to be directly linked to the Olympics, but this is a great opportunity for us and our existing supporters to try to promote Traidcraft’s work more widely.

So what’s happened so far?

• We’ve had requests for nearly 7,000 Church Event Packs, a resource produced by Traidcraft and endorsed by More Than Gold. This free guide for churches contains loads of advice on activities and events, along with a huge array of worship resources and, importantly, how to incorporate Traidcraft products and producer stories into everything that is done. We have a few packs left, please quote code: 58434

• We’re working with the Salvation Army who have loaned their refreshments vans to the festivities and we’ve distributed over 26,000 co-branded cup sleeves, tea, coffee and sugar for those all important cuppas to be served along the Torch route. (thanks to our blenders Ringtons for their help).

So are the churches DOING SOMETHING?• More Than Gold has profile on the

Torch route through an open-topped “Praise” bus travelling in front of the Torch cavalcade.

• A baton containing prayers is being passed right around the country along the Torch route too.

• In Devon & Cornwall churches had a record attempt for serving the most cream teas. They served 10,000, at least 1000 were Traidcraft tea!! 

• There are loads of photos on the More Than Gold Facebook site showing community events at each location along the route – some really large festivals are happening.

Is your community DOING SOMETHING? It’s not too late! How about:-

• Setting up a Fairtrade café for people waiting to see the torch

• Use big screens in your church to show for the Opening Ceremony and that all important 100m final!

• A sports quiz, pasta party, wine or chocolate tasting? (all details in the Event guide).
