Also those who are presenting their child for baptism should be residing in the Parish. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE If anyone is planning marriage for the New Year - 2009, you are asked to contact Father Barry six months prior to the proposed date for a marriage. Anyone contemplating marriage is required to follow the preparation for marriage course at Saint Ninian Place, Antigonish. The spring Marriage Course will take place this weekend on April 25th and 26th at St. Ninian Place, Antigonish. FIRST FRIDAY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY Will be held this Friday, May 3rd, Morning Mass is at 9:00 am and the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the Church after the Mass and until 5:00 pm. As usual, I will be taking Holy Communion to our sick and shut-in parishioners after the Mass. A list is on the Bulletin Board at the entrance to the Church with half hour intervals for our parishioners to sign to ensure that there will always be someone in the Church throughout the day. Once again, I thank Art Riley for coordinating this devotion with his posting of the list. I am always so edified by the number of our parishioners who make the effort to come to the Church throughout the day to pray before the Blessed Sacrament exposed. Of course, this First Friday begins the month of May which is dedicated to our Blessed Mother. Everyone is invited to participate in this special event. SAINT PETER'S PARISH LADIES' NIGHT Will take place this year on Sunday May 3rd, 2009 in the Monsignor Donnelly Hall with the reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by the banquet. The members of the Holy Name Society of the Parish will prepare and serve the meal which is always delicious and the evening a great success. This year the meal will consist of chicken and all the trimmings. Tickets are available through the area Captains of the Holy Name. IMPORTANT DATES - RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated by Bishop Lahey, Bishop of Antigonish on Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 at the 6:30 p.m. Mass. Classes for Confirmation are underway under the the direction of Vern Boudreau, of our Parish who is doing a wonderful job. Vern presented the candidates for confirmation at the evening Mass on Saturday evening last. We were asked to pray for the candidates, which I am sure we will all do. SPECIAL EVENT OF PRAYER For families and friends of those who have died under the care of Saint Martha's Regional Hospital from August 1st , 2008 to January 31st, 2009. The service will be held in the Martha Centre Auditorium just behind the Hospital on Thursday, April 30th, at 7:15 pm. A social gathering will follow - everyone is invited to attend.

STUDENT CAREER SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM As I mentioned, the Parish Council had made application for Summer Grants Programs sponsored by the Federal Government and the Provincial to "hire a student". We have been informed, this past week, that our application for the Provincial Program has been approved and so the Parish will be able to hire a student to perform work in the Parish for fourteen weeks. I have passed along, to our Parish Accountant, Richard Breen, the letters and forms we have received to determine the financial responsibility of the Parish as a certain financial contribution from the Parish is also required. Richard will inform me soon regarding the specific details of the job and the payment which will be given. The Parish Council will call for applications from among the "students" in our Parish who might qualify and then decide on the successful candidate. The hiring of a student is always very beneficial to the Parish as there are so many added chores in the Parish during the summer months and so many ways he/she might assist our caretaker. The student will work under the caretaker’s supervision. Equally, it is beneficial to the student for summer employment. Again, details will be provided in subsequent Bulletins. We are very grateful to the Provincial Government for this summer employment grant. We have not yet received word from our application for the Federal grant to hire a student. PARISH COUNCIL We are always in need of new members to join the Parish Council which assists the Parish Priest in conducting the affairs of the Parish. The present membership consists of: Theresa Mattie, Sheila Pelly, Tracey Wallace, a representative from the CWL - yet to be named, Art Riley, Bernie Mattie,

Alvin Bowman, Mike Penny from the Holy Name. If anyone is interested, please contract Father Barry as soon as possible. SACRED HEART MESSENGERS Are a monthly publication which many of our parishioners receive through various captains in the individual areas of the Parish. Of course, all costs escalate and so the charge for this year will increase to $15.00. The captains take names from parishioners and faithfully distribute the Messengers each month. There is excellent reading in the Messengers. If you might be interested, you can contact Ann Wallace and she will let you know who is in charge of distribution for your area and you name will go on the individual lists. FEW WORDS FROM FATHER BARRY

On Saturday evening last, we had the official closing of our Religious Education Program. Special thanks to all who made the program this year such a success. In the absence of Art Riley, our religious education co-ordinator, who was attending one of the last of the weekends in the Ministry Development Program for the Diocese, his wife Teresa read a letter from him and presented the teachers and children to receive their Certificates of completion of the Program for this year. It was very well done but I was somewhat amazed that many children did not attend. Of course, if their

parents do not take them, they will hardly show! This remains a constant issue after all "our talk" and encouragement. This does not detract from that fact that "many" have done their best! Special thanks for those who have been so serious and dedicated. Vernon Boudreau presented to the Parish, on Saturday evening last at our 6:30 pm Mass, the students who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, May 23rd, at the 6:30 pm. Bishop Lahey will be with us to confer the sacrament. Prior to the reception of Confirmation, there will be a special celebration of the Sacrament of Penance for the candidates in our Parish Church. This will be announced shortly. As I mentioned, last weekend, we celebrated Leona DeWolfe of Merland who observed her 100th birthday on Friday last (April 17th). I was very happy to attend and thank Edward and Anne Benoit, with whom she resides, for their wonderful hospitality and a great celebration! Also, another native of our Parish, David Otis Delorey, formerly of Tracadie celebrated his 100th. Birthday in Hamilton, Ontario. Herbert Delorey, his nephew, went to Hamilton for the festivities and I am sure, brought our greetings, prayers and best wishes. "Otis" loves Tracadie and this Parish and so often returns to it for visits and plans to this summer! God bless him with continued good health so that he can do so! The Book of Wisdom of the Old Testament states, "Old age is the crown of glory, it is gained by virtuous living"! May God bless our friends, Leona and Otis. I want to insist again that we require several new members for the Parish Council of Saint Peter's Parish. As I have mentioned, the Parish Council of any Parish "assists" the Parish Priest in the running of the Parish - both spiritually and materially. Many times, members of the Council have to remain on the Council for years and years because no one volunteers to join. It is all so easy to sit back and do nothing and to find fault with those who are very generous in assisting any way they possibly can! But, who else comes forward? But this situation is not by any means unique to our Parish - many Parish Priests relate to me the "same experience" and state, "It is always the same people who volunteer"! Thank heavens, they do! And who among us might dare to think that they have "done their part and so retire from everything or indeed encourage others to do so?" Were that a

"common attitude", we would have no one doing anything! The Parish is the responsibility of every Parishioner and hopefully will be here long after we are gone. We ensure that by participating as best and as long as we possibly can. So, I encourage for sure, any parishioner to volunteer to become a member of the Parish Council of this Parish. All you need do is phone me. There is no substitute for a "generous spirit"! The Month of May is traditionally, the Month of the Blessed Mother! As Spring breaks and shows new life, what better way observe this month than to devote it ourselves to Mary, the Mother of God! The "Rosary" that sacred and special means of prayer is a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Let us make every effort to pray the rosary on our own and in our homes throughout each day of this Month. As we all notice at wakes of Catholics, the Holy Rosary is entwined on their fingers and in their hands as they lay in the casket - so also, with the Pope when he is waked as we might have noticed with Pope John Paul II. As God blesses us with the gift of life, let us use the rosary often in our days of life especially during the Month of May! On this Friday, May 1st., the Lobster Season begins and many of our parishioners earn their livelihood from fishing. May God bless them and provide his Providential care to them and give them an abundant catch each day! God bless you and have a great week.
