1 Corinthians 3.11-16

Some time ago I walked in on my parents watching a TV show called: ‘So You Think You’re Royalty’. You may have seen it? For those who haven’t it’s about verifying stories of famous or royal ancestors within one’s own family tree. I sat down to watch a brother and sister’s claim to be related to the Royal Family, only to find out by the end of the episode that it remained a mystery. Have you ever wondered what your family tree would look like if you could trace it all the way back to the first human beings? I’m sure it would make a fascinating story. But just like the episode, our ancestors often remain a mystery. Their heritage is closer than we imagine though. It’s inseparable from us, it’s right there within us. Their genetic identity lives on inside us. We may even be able to make out habitual behaviour we have picked up from our parents and grandparents.

Writing to the Church in Corinth, Paul talks about the heritage of the gospel message within us. He writes about our responsibility as we build ourselves, each other, and God’s community up from the foundation which was set, which is Jesus Christ. Eloquently through metaphor Paul illustrates the choices we have at hand concerning the building materials that make us, our families and communities what they are. Some materials are robust, some are able to bear a great load, some are good for decoration, some for insulation, some weak, some flimsy, some enduring, some not lasting the test of time. He paints the papyrus page with the scene of a judgement that tests the quality of the building, and warns about the shoddy builder escaping only as through fire.

We may be tempted to think we are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The truth is, our actions can have lasting effects, not only on who we are and become, but also on our families and communities, and perhaps great numbers of our unborn ancestors. The future is present with every choice and action. Our lives may not seem that important, but our actions build the house for generations of our very own flesh and blood. Should we not give them the Royal treatment?

HOW TO START A USER-FRIENDLY SERVICE

1. Specialise. Know who your target audience is and go for them, because you cannot appeal to everyone. For instance if you target university students you might also attract other groups, for instance young professionals, but you probably won't reach most 50-somethings or teenage mothers.

2. Don't try to target two groups at once. For instance, if you try to reach seniors and teens with 50% contemporary, then about 50% or your audience will hate it at any given time. It's easier to start a whole new meeting than try to adapt a traditional one

3. Be unselfish. Don't do what you want, do what they want.

4. Minimise the bureaucracy involved. Elect leaders and let them lead with minimal politics and committee meetings. You may need your pastor and church board on side first.

5. Don't expect it to pay for itself. No firm makes money from advertising.

6. Expect criticism and fatigue. Get together often for an encouraging chat (don't spend all the time complaining!) and pray often as a group and as individuals. Sometimes go out just for fun and relaxation together.
