PP Arthur Hubbard presented the now famous “That was the Year that was” which was written by President Damien Hellard. Damien thought he had plenty to do on the night and wanted to stay focussed particulary with the lovely Heidi and Amelie present and other family members. Arthur started the recitation:
“Before I start, I am required to announce the following Legal disclaimer. The following publication was written by Damien Hellard, produced by Damien Hellard, authorised by Damien Hellard but spoken by Arthur Hubbard. Neither Damien nor Arthur accepts liability for any statements that are the truth, the whole truth, or nothing like the truth. And with that dear Rotarians and Friends, we shall commence. As far as Rotary events go, the 2016 Brighton Rotary Changeover was nothing unusual. One President talked at length about the magnificent job he had just completed and another talked about the magnificent job he was about to do.Outgoing President, Barry Hickman, noted that being President of the Rotary Club of Brighton was a bit like running a graveyard. You have a lot of people under you, but none of them are listening. We were also blessed at the changeover when Ass. Governor, Adrian Ranson, advised that he left his speech behind, so his address would be short and sweet. It’s a shame more governors do not learn the lesson and leave their speech at home, or better still, just stay at home. Present company excepted off courseOur new President, Dale Hoy managed to overcome some initial microphone issues, introduced his Board and told us all about what he had planned for the year ahead. He finished by saying we would all have some fun. Our first meeting fitted Dale’s Fun theme in the form of cocktail party, where for reasons unbeknown to all present, Maureen thought it would be a great idea to produce a slide show of Dale’s of Dale’s younger years … so we were all entertained by
embarrassing photos of an awkward and much younger version of Dale.
When Dale got up to address his first formal meeting, there were a few microphone issues, which made his first meeting a little frustrating for him. However, to show that nothing slips through the cracks in a Rotary Club, the following week, PDG John King gave his Rotarian Behind the Badge presentation - his first such talk to Brighton Rotary in his 40 years in Rotary. He noted that he been told that he would be presenting in November but he actually read the previous week’s Bulletin and found out he was actually the next week’s guest speaker.
Not wanting to miss some of the limelight, PP Tony Nanfra used Secretary’s Announcements to give a day by day account of his 8 week holiday in Italy.
He had such a good holiday that he came back with a slight hint of an Italian accent, which meant no one in the Club had any idea what he actually got up to on his holidayLate July, Maurice Lichter became the first new member to be sponsored by a female member … which was somewhat appropriate, given he is a gynaecologist. The weekly meetings were all going very well, with a great line up of speakers: Debbie Sims spoke about her incredible journey in fighting lymphocytic leukaemia. This was followed up by Bernie Fraser (Treasury Secretary and Reserve Bank Board Member) and Greg Sheridan (Foreign Editor of the Australian Newspaper).Mark Dreyfus (Shadow Attorney General) was also an excellent speaker. Unfortunately he had to cut his speech short following his ten minute introduction by Chairman Stuart McMillan. In early September Dale addressed the Club, and following a few issues with the microphone, told us all that it would be a great night, that we could all have a drink and all have some fun.The guest speaker was David Whiting, a Rotarian most noted for his weekly segment on ABC radio, where he gives free legal advice on John Faine’s morning program. Chairman, Wayne Sanderson suggested that members could close their eyes and listen to David Whiting and it would be just like listening to the radio. Greg Biggin didn’t hear this advice - his eyes were already closed and stayed closed until he was woken up at the end of the meeting. continued page 4

Grow up. Spend money wisely .
In late September, we had our annual visit from our District Governor. Neville John gave an interesting talk (well as far as District Governor’s talks go), not least of all because he noted that the delivery of polio vaccines in Africa was made difficult because of the militant group, Procol Harum. Those present may recall that Boko Haram are a militant militia group in Africa, whereas Procol Harum was an English band who had the 1967 hit, “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” This is an understandable mistake as villages in Africa reportedly turn a whiter shade of pale after visits by Boko Haram. The last meeting in September was a Partner’s Night, with a football theme and former Hawthorn and St. Kilda player, Russell Morris as guest speaker. Dale obviously wasn’t confident on whether it would be a good meeting, as in his summary to the Club at the following meeting he noted, “Last week was surprisingly good.” And we had a lot of fun.At the Annual General Meeting in November, John McKell observed that it was the second most eagerly awaited meeting of the year … only surpassed by the District Governor’s visit. This was disturbing as John is not known for his levity. And so the first half of the year was nearing its end. Ahead of the Sponsors Cocktail Evening at the Brighton International, President Dale encouraged as many members as possible should attend the night. He said we’d all have a couple of drinks and have some fun.At our last meeting for the calendar year, and after a few problems with the microphone, Dale again encouraged members to come along to the Children’s Christmas Party. After telling members to bring along their
children, he paused before suggesting that perhaps it would be better if they brought their grandchildren instead. He promised they would have a lot of fun. The Children’s Christmas Party was a great event with Paddy Michaelson playing the role of Santa. A few Rotarians were surprised when Paddy turned up wearing with a fake Santa beard. When asked why he wasn’t going “au naturel”, Paddy responded that it hurt less when the kids gave the beard a tug.The new year started with Dale having a few issues with the microphone, but he welcomed everyone back and advised us of several Club events coming up where we could all have a couple of drinks and have some fun.It also started with sporting legends leading the wonderful guest speaker list. This included Nicole Livingstone entertaining the Club ahead of the Great Australia Day Swim. There were also a strong dose of fund-raising events, all promising to be bigger and better than ever. In the space of fifteen weeks we staged: •TheGreatAustraliaDaySwim, •TheGrandPrixClassicCarShow, •TheNightofStarsand •TheBrightonLunch. As is customary, each Event Chairman inflated the amount of money they raised and as usual, the Treasurer reduced the Chairman’s estimate of funds raised by around 25%The guest speaker bonanza kept on coming too. Kevin and Gail Donovan’s talk on rebuilding Donovans was very popular, as was Peta Credlin - who made it to Brighton Rotary after several false starts. continued page 8

Chairman for the evening, Daryl Forge, started proceedings by calling for the Grace and Toast. He then invited Gabe Hau to the rostrum and he is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Southbank, Past Assistant Governor of Rotary International District 9800 and on the board of Violence Free Families. He spoke on behalf of the District Foundation committee and thanked our club for our support for the Foundation in the last year. Gabe told us
a bit about Rotary Foundation and about the work of Rotary itself. He said that in its 100 years since 1973 to today Rotary has given out more than $4.3bill to charitable causes that encompasses a lot of charity work that Rotary does and a lot of people have noticed that the Foundation had spent money on Rotary projects that are done by Rotarians. He said that means people like us and himself who spend the money to make a difference and
do good in the world. Gabe then passed the mike to David Smyth who presented a PHF award to Danny Finley for travelling the country to promote the Violence Free Families message with Colleen Hewitt. He also made a PHF award to Colleen herself in her absence as she is an ambassador for Violence free Families. Danny accepted the award on her behalf which was for her outstanding work in preventing family violence. She has been an ambassador for the past 3 years and promotes the Violence Free Family message at her concerts which gives it a high profile.
The next speaker was the recently appointed DG Peter Frueh. Peter was there to present a citation award to our club. He said
that every year a District Citation is presented to a club for all the good work that they do. Peter asked Pres Dale to come forward and receive the award on behalf of our club.
Dale asked is the microphone working and
then thanked Peter and mentioned that our Club had run the District Governor Changeover at the RACV the Sunday before when Peter became the new DG. He congratulated Peter and Anne on their new role. Dale said he wanted to acknowledge the great support he had in the last twelve months from his wife Maureen and son Alex. Dale said he may be the man behind the badge but Maureen had been the woman behind the man.
Dale said Maureen had his back the whole time and said she was a great partner in life, business and dare he say fun!!He said that Tuesday 4 July would be their 25th wedding anniversary. He said he was very proud for his son Alex who is a Science Graduate at Monash University and he is half way through a Commerce Degree and last couple of weeks he got his first internship with Australian Treasury.
Dale also mentioned that two members of our club had passed away in the last 12 months. The first was Ian Banks who was only a member of our club for 18 months and PP Jack Joel OAM who was a charter member of our club and the first full time President. Dale welcomed the Jack’s wife Karen and son Craig who were both present at the evening.
Dale said that former DG Neville John said that when you take over the position of President of a Rotary Club you should try and be in a position where you make your club in a better place to be in than when you started. Dale said that others can judge whether he achieved that. Dale said from his point of view that at the Changeover last year he decided it was to have some fun, to make the club a happy place not only for members but also for strangers to the club. Also sponsors and other people in our community so that so that they would start engaging with our club. He said he started then year with a cocktail function.
Dale said that the message he got 12 months ago was that the club wanted to be more happy, have more fun, have great speakers which our club has a tradition of doing, have more fellowship events and have more fundraising events. He thought that was actually achieved.
As a way of radically cutting down on what he was going to say at the Changeover he called on Bulletin Editor Max Martin to create 4 pages in the Bulletin devoted to listing the speakers, events etc. Dale mentioned some of the speakers we had which brought great audiences to our meetings like John Fraser Australian Treasury Secretary and Reserve Bank Board Member and Peta Credlin who attracted an audience of 230. This gave Dale a chance to showcase our Club’s work to the broader community. He said we had 2 Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner events, a sponsors night at Brighton International and a lunch at the Dendy Street BathingBox No 69 which was very windy but everybody seemed to enjoy it. Daryl said they had prepaid so that was OK.
- YEAR
Rotary Club of Brighton Changeover 30 June 2017
Dale said we had a lovely evening at Jack Joel’s Car Museum to celebrate Jack’s life combined with a dinner at Mardo’s restaurant. We had a Winery Tour to the Yarra Valley wonderfully organised by Clyde White and a Cocktail party at Girraween to finish the year.
Dale then mentioned the fundraising events that the club put on during his year. He said we had 7 fundraising events. Dale said for us to look at last week’s Bulletin for more details of the Donations, fundraising events and updates.
Dale mentioned about the Rotaract clubs that they are looking to set up at Brighton Grammar and other schools which his wife Maureen has been very proactive. He also praised Max Martin for the work on the Bulletin and said that he had nothing to do with the creation of the logo on page 3 of the Bulletin. He said this is what happens to graphic designers after midnight.
Dale then thanked all his board members. As Peter Sherman would say they know who they are.
Dale then gave out 3 awards. The first was from a proposal from the Joel family and that we have a Jack Joel Memorial Award for Rotarian of the Year to be presented at each Changeover night. Dale said that Stuart McIntyre had been a fantastic support to him all year and had helped out in the treasurer role assisting Dale to take it over when PP Bill Howley took ill. He also had been Chairman of the Great Australian Day Swim and Director of International. Karen Joel was called up to present the award to Stuart who said he was quite touched by the honour and felt that Rotary was a two way street and that he had got more out of Rotary than he put in friendship, engagement and enjoyment.
The next award was a Paul Harris Fellow to Maria Hicks wife of Brendan Hicks for her work in Cambodia. Maria first went to Cambodia in 2011 with friends to run in the 10km event of the Angkor Wat half marathon. There she met a tour guide who had founded the Foundation for Water and Education, Cambodia. Impressed with this organization she joined and has been back to Cambodia for a month every year since. Their focus is the poorest of the poor in rural villages. This foundation, made up of only the Founder, Maria and a lady in Italy have installed almost 400 fresh water wells, built 2 houses, supplied numerous bicycles, laptop computers, Days for Girls menstrual kits etc. Education scholarships have been provided, including one for a girl to study medicine. Around 10,000 people have benefited from the work. She was recently appointed the official representative to Cambodia for the international NGO, Days for Girls Inc. Prior to this she made 2 visits to Timor Leste in 2009 and 2010 to assist the training of teachers.
Dale then presented PP Tom Buxton with a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire. Dale said that Tom had been a past president, speaker seeker and of course his secretary in his year. Tom thanked Dale very much for the award.
So that was it for Dale and Damien announced that we would have a musical interlude from two ladies he had met in Nepal.
After this it was Changeover time. Dale asked Damien to come to the lectern. Dale said it had been a privilege been the President for the last 12 months. He mentioned the importance of the chains and Maureen yelled out get them off! Dale then removed the chains and placed them on Damien.
Damien said that Dale had mentioned what PDG Neville John had said about leaving the club in a better place than when he started and Damien thought that Dale had achieved just that.
Damien thanked DG Peter and Anne Frueh for being there and said they are family friends. He also thanked wife Heidi and Amelie for being there as well and pointed out that it was his daughter’s second Changeover. He also thanked Heidi’s parents, his eldest sister Janine and eldest brother Greg for being there as well. Damien said when preparing for his year he looked back on all things are great club have achieved. He said we give money to BayCISS to help kids get an education and other great works. He said that some people say we are the best club in Australia and he is not sure that we are. Damien feels we won’t be the best club until we become the best we can be. Why stop there and try to become the best club in the world. Damien said let’s encourage more people to join Rotary so they can get more out of it. Damien said he is going to make changes and he not sure that they will all work but it wants to give it a go. Damien said if it doesn’t work then when Norm Thomas comes as President in he can change it all back. There will be less guest speakers for instance. He feels we don’t spend enough time with fellowship during meetings. He is going to introduce Event protocols so that everything will be done according to some standards which Daryl Forge has been working on. He said they are going to focus on Rotary and our Rotary partners especially people who carry our Rotary logo. He wants improve our utilisation of modern technology and various people on the board will cover this. They are going to work on local programs with high visibility and he is pleased that PP Arthur Hubbard is going to tackle the environmental projects around the area of Nhill. They are going to promote what we do. Damien then introduced his board:Secretary David Finney, Community Norm Thomas, Treasurer PP Bill Howley, Vice Pres Daryl Forge, International Stuart McIntyre, Youth Services Stuart McMillan, Membership Robyn Lichter, Fellowship Geoff Cunningham, Marketing & Comm Jo Kwok.

Paddy Michaelson did a Rotarian Behind the Badge where he gave an entertaining and very detailed account of his life as a merchant seaman. As the clock neared 8:30, President Dale politely suggested to Paddy it was maybe time to bring his talk to a close, whereupon Paddy replied despondently, “but I’m only up to 1975.”Sadly, as the year was coming to an end, two Rotarians were called to higher service. Both Ian Banks and PP Jack Joel were popular, warm hearted Rotarians.Ian was a relatively new member, whereas Jack was a founding father and unofficial Godfather of the Club. They will both be dearly missed. In May, Peter O’Brien from the Melbourne Airport Express Consortium, gave a very interesting talk. He was very clear that the job could be done cheaply and quickly. He was also equally clear in his distaste for our State’s Premier. But perhaps he will be best remembered by Rotarians for his quote, “I’m not passionate … I’m 65 … and at 65 you don’t get passionate too often.” He’s obviously never met George Jerzyk or PP Alan Pinkus.Throughout the year, we had plenty of great speakers and the occasional … shall we say … miss, and it was clear that some speakers were desperately vying for the Arch Klumph Award. For those members that are not aware, the coveted Arch Klumph Award is given to the guest speaker who brings to public speaking what Theresa May brings to political strategy. This year the award sadly goes to a man who is great supporter of the Club, but now famously or possibly infamously, becomes the Club’s first double winner of this award. Former Bayside Mayor, James Long, strayed a little off track during his talk in July. Well, actually, he wandered completely off track and was found several suburbs away. The year finished off with a cocktail party at Girraween Hall, part of Brighton Grammar. President Dale invited everyone along so we could have a few drinks and have some fun.And so now the Brighton Rotary year comes to a close and President Dale can retire for a well-earned rest, and dream his dream of having microphones that actually work.....................But what about the rest of tonight … well, in the words of a very recent past President, let’s all have a few drinks and have some fun.”

IVAN’S HACKERSIVAN’S HACKERS

The Story: New years day - when grand resolutions are made. With a full complement of Hackers, there were resolutions galore to play well. Alas, as is so often the case with new year resolutions, most were broken, too - mostly by the end of the first hole.Perhaps because the morning was so chilly, everybody’sclubs had somehow shrivelled and become hard to find and difficult to handle. At least, that’s what Ivan Vojlay thought when he presented Michael Williams a head warmer for his driver. Michael thought it was some sort of Australian sex toy. Nobody was brave enough to ask Michael, visiting from USA, what sort of golf courses he frequents.Speaking of Michael Williams, he took out the Vojlay-Cole Trophy for the day, in recognition of his superb putting in the pre-game putting competition, plus recognition that he’d travelled about 15 000 km further than Sven-Erik Bredenberg usually does, just to be with the Hackers. Welcome back, Michael.John Carroll deserves a mention. We all thought that as an Englishman the cold morning would favour his playing. Alas, it was not to be. John smashed Ron Stark’s then Dale Hoy’s high-score records, coming in with 72. John, if ever there was a reason to lay back and think of England, that was it.The Gossip:David Bodycoat’s budding career as a scorer has ended. Despite being an accountant, David managed to get the total scores of everybody in his group wrong. That’s up there with Arthur Hubbard, a banker, losing interest. There are likely to be very confused, possibly neurotic magpies over the next few weeks. James Tisdall’s Trick Shot award provides a clue. With a massive 270m drive we were all expecting a birdie, perhaps even an eagle on the 14th. Successfully redefining the meaning of “birdie” James managed to chip his second shot straight into a tree, where it stayed, snaffled by a pair of magpies who are now trying to hatch his ball. Third shot into the bunker. Fourth shot, off the green. Scores thereafter withheld to protect the disappointed.En Passant: Frost on the ground for most of the round You’d expect to see tracks on the green To help us putt straight with just the right weight. But no! The worst scores that we’ve ever seen
