TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Surprisingly, the church moved very slowly in claiming marriage as a focus of a en on and care. Nearly every-where in the Roman world, ci zens agreed on how to celebrate marriage. Consent of the man and woman is what made a marriage valid in the eyes of the law, and although there was a tradi onal ceremony, it was home-based and op onal. The ceremony was for show-ing the social status of the families involved (the proces-sion ideally detoured through crowds), and for reminding the woman of her legal transfer from her father’s control to her husband’s. The “big moment” of the ceremony had nothing to do with vows, but with the bride’s don-ning the yellow veil with red highlights that was the daily wear of married women. A wedding feast included soothsayers and animal sacrifice to the new household’s gods. Chris ans found that distasteful, of course, but since marriage was a family ma er, they could edit things out. The church was comfortable with this, and some mes recommended that the couple seek the ad-vice of the bishop. His permission was only required for the marriage of a cleric, or for a marriage Rome didn’t recognize, such as between a free woman and a slave. There was no blessing, no liturgy, no priest. Chris ans followed the customs of the day, but they knew that cus-tom and rela onships were transformed from within themselves by the fact of their bap sm. Outwardly, Chris ans married exactly as their pagan neighbors, but they certainly invested the usual gestures with a dynamic sense of Christ’s presence.

PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL

Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heav-en. From Mark’s Gospel we hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of

commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gos-pel to every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Trea ng others with dignity and respect, providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gi s showered on us, coming together as God’s family in worship and praise—these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives.

P A R I S H L I B R A R Y N O T E S

The Mystery of Mary-by Rev Dr. Paul Haffner [232.1] - The glories of the Blessed Virgin Mary have been enshrined in the heart of the church for 2000 years. She is an integral part of the scriptures and liturgy and holds an unparalleled place in the hearts of the faithful. In this book, Fr. Haffner offers a theological and doctrinal panorama concerning Mary in a historical perspec ve. The author first describes Mariology in rela on to other branches of theology. Then he reviews Church informa on about Mary from Holy Scrip-ture including Old Testament forms of pre-figurement and New Testament witness. Finally, he examines each of the fundamental doctrines that the Church teaches about Our Lady. Who is Mary? She was called “Miryam” by her parents—a very common name in late BC Pales ne. Few people, oth-er than rela ves and friends, would have given Mary a sec-ond thought. At the age of fourteen or fi een she was en-gaged to be married to Joseph. Again, nothing unusual, as it was the usual age when the daughters of Israel married. Almost nothing is known of her life un l, at the age of fi een or sixteen, a most startling event occurred. With a flash of light, the angel Gabriel delivered an astounding message to Mary! She was to be the Mother of the Son of God Himself! Why does Mary return? The answers are not wri en down in a catechism. Rather, they lie in the heart of Mary, which is a heart we should come to understand, and in the needs of the world, which we understand all too well. Ap-pari ons have always had something to do with her heart and the world’s needs.

THANK YOU Dear friends: We want to thank you for your generous dona ons to Social Concerns in memory of my husband, Peter. Also for the many acts of kindness, Masses, visits and wonderful sermon by Fr. Adrian at the funeral Mass. A special thank you to the Brother Knights who visited Pe-ter and did so many acts of kindness with the recep on; he loved them all and was proud to be counted among them. ~~Mae Signori & Family

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
