City of Krk – pearl of Liburnija
City of Krk has been the urban center of the island for 3000 years. The first known
inhabitants of the island of Krk were Illyrian tribe Liburni. After conquering the Illyrian
tribes Romans annexed the island of Krk to their empire and adapted town Krk to their
needs by building thermal baths, temples and other cultural institutions.
The old part of the city, surrounded by i’ts walls, city gates and fortifications, represents
distinctive sight that many tourists frequently visit. Sun, sea, air, fishermen, olive growers
and tourism are synonyms for the largest Croatian island, so richly covered with vegeta-
tion it is ideal for the development of orienteering, right at a time of year when a large
part of Europe is under snow. Regarding to this project, the City of Krk offers the
possibility of sufficient quality tourism grants, as well as the airport which makes this
location easily accessible to all participants.
Cooperation of the local community gives us the right to candidate this area for the
organization of this international competition, because we are convinced that tourist
facilities and a high level of service guarantee logistical support to this project.
Orienteering club „RIS“ Delnice
Orienteering club “RIS” Delnice was founded on February
12th 2000. In order for orienteering sport to reach an
Olympic status, “RIS” is popularizing orienteering in city of
Delnice, Gorski Kotar and Primorsko-goranska County.
It helps club members in their development in order to
worthily represent the club on both sport and professional
level. Club members have organized the European Military
Championship in 1998, World Military Championship in 1999
and World Championship in ARFD in 2010.
Taking into account the regional competition Alpe Adria Cup in 2004 it can be
concluded that the specific areas covered by green karst and proximity to coastal
resorts are a winning combination that each year attracts more and more fans of this
sport. We believe that our application is justified, as the founder and full member of the
Croatian Orienteering Federation, and that we have the necessary competences to
realize this program.
Croatia Open - a synonym for Croatian Orienteering sport
Croatia Open is a five-day international
orienteering competition. One of its kind
and most meaningful orienteering event
with traditional character in Croatia.
Aspiration and devotion to organize this
competition at the highest possible level
have so far attracted hundreds of
competitors from more than 40 countries
to Gorski kotar and Croatia.
Leading men of the IOF (International Ori-
enteering Federation) have recognized this achievement and have several times al-
ready assigned this competition status of Race for the World Ranking list (World Rank-
ing Event).
The competition has profiled itself into one of
the most important in the region, while
Gorski Kotar and the island of Krk became
desirable orienteering summer destinations in
Europe. Organizing of Croatia Open at this
level is the best reference for acceptance of
our nomination by entire orienteering
community.

MAPS AND TERRAIN
Unique island karst terrain with open areas. Very detailed! Area was never used for orien-
teering before. Maps will be printed in 1:10000 with 5m contour interval.
Stage 1 (long distance - WRE
Map Prniba I, 1: 10 000, e - 5 m
The only map of this type of terrain in Croatia for
now! Prniba peninsula is divided into two parts.
The first part is characterized by clean and
managed pine forests, crisscrossed by stone
walls, while the second part of the peninsula
consists of cultivated olive groves and pastures
used for grazing sheep. Technically very
demanding terrain, difficult to navigate and run
due to coastal landforms and vegetation.
Stage 2 (short-long distance)
Map Prniba II, 1: 10 000, e - 5 m
The terrain, which includes map Prniba II is
characterized by open areas (olive groves and
pastures) and forests rich in karst details (stone
walls, stone heads, landslides, etc.). The highest
point on the map is 50 m.
Note that some special symbols will occur on map!
*Note that final courses may vary to this lenghts
