Coaches confident, but cautious ahead of Group M Qualifiers

PARAMARIBO, SURINAME, Friday June 14, 2013: The coaches of the four teams involved in the fourth of six second round NORCECA Men groups, M, for one automatic spot to the third round of qualification for the 2014 FIVB World Volleyball Championship in Poland, were all confident in their team’s ability to qualify, but at the same time expressed caution about their opponents.

The coaches, Jerry Slijngand (Suriname), Erialc Eddy (Martinique), Reider Lucas

(Guatemala) and Anguilla’s Jason Liburd were speaking on the eve of the two-day competition to be played at the Ismay Van Wilgen Sporthal on Saturday June 15 and Sunday June 16, at the end of which the top team will advance to the next phase of qualification.

The second placed team will also have a chance to qualify, but will need to be one of the four best second placed teams out of the six qualifying group.

The matches start at 9am daily followed by 11am to conclude the morning sessions while the afternoon session’s starts at7pm daily with the second match at 9pm.

Slijngand said, “Our preparation was very good. We had a few things that we could have done better, but overall we are very satisfied with the way we got ready for this tournament.

“We have been training for a while and the guys are keenly looking forward to the matches as we hope to do well.

“We don’t have much information on the other teams in general, but we have played Martinique before and have an idea of what to expect, while we were able to get some videos on Anguilla and Guatemala.

Eddy echoed the views of the Suriname coach saying, “I don’t know much about the other teams, but we had a good preparation with all of our top players and we are ready to play.

“I have told my players that we need to be very focus in every match and if we can do this, then our chances of topping the group and qualifying will be good. We need to play well and have a strong mental game as well,” ended Eddy.

Page 9: Bulletin no1 2014 norceca world championship qualification round 2 mens group m suriname

Liburd said his team which was used to playing outdoors, was able to get a practice match indoor recently and this should help his players settle quickly.

“We are looking much better than in the past as a unit while we have also brought into the team two new faces, who should give the team a lift as well.

“As for my expectations, we are here to represent our country well and win,” stated Connor.

The Cuban-born Lucas, who has been in charge of the Guatemala team for the past six years was quick to point out his team had little knowledge of its opponents, but at the same time the preparation was good.

“We came here with the aim to qualify, which means we have to win and this group of players, is about 80 per cent of the team we had for our first round qualifiers, so it is good, even though its only nine player” ended Lucas.

Last year, when qualification served off with first round groups, Suriname topped its four-team Group E series by beating Barbados in a thrilling final, in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, 25-22, 18-25, 25-25, 25-20, 15-12.

Martinique secured its passage to the second round qualifiers by defeating Jamaica in their bronze medal contest in Group A, which was contested in Curacao, 25-18, 25-20, 25-18.

The Guatemalans were very impressive in their first round Group H series in San Jose, Costa Rica, outlasting the host, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13 in their final match to end with a 3-0 record in their group and 13 points, one more than the host.

Anguilla, on the other hand, was third in Group D played in French St Martin, after beating Dutch St Maarten, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 for its lone win in the five-team group, to end with the same 1-3 record as its opponent and Bermuda.

However, because of winning more sets despite losing its other three matches against Antigua & Barbuda (25-16, 14-25, 20-25, 25-13, 15-10); French St Martin (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19) and Bermuda

(16-25, 16-25, 28-26, 26-24, 15-10), Anguilla advanced with nine points to Ducth St Maarten;s seven and Bermuda’s four.

Already qualified to the third round carded for next year from the second round qualifiers are St Lucia and Costa Rica as winners of Group J and L respectively while Haiti and Aruba stayed in contention by ending second in the groups.

The other series to be contested in the second round are Group N (Dominica, Honduras, Grenada, Guadeloupe) in Guadeloupe from June 14-17; Group K (Dominican Republic, St
