BEE-Whiz!
2
There are around 25,000 known species of bee worldwide and there are probably more to be discovered! These 25,000 species can be divided into over 4000 types of bees.
A honey bee flies up to 24 km /hr or 15 mph and its wings beat 200 times per second or 12,000 beats / minute.
The average worker bee makes about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.
It takes one colony of honey bees (around 30,000 bees) to pollinate an acre of fruit trees.

Quick facts about our buzzy, fuzzy friends!
INSTRUCTIONS:
Fill a planter with soil almost full.
Make wells in the soil where your herbs will go.
Once all of the herbs are in the planter, add the rest of the soil to hold everything in place.
Give the herbs a shower of water and water when dry.
Watch the bublebees enjoy your savory herbs!
Herbs like rosemary, chives, thyme, sage and marjoram make our food yummy while providing bumblebees with lots of pollen and nectar.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
• A large planter (or bucket) with holes in the bottom for drainage
• Enough soil or compost to fill the planter
• 3-4 herb plants

BUSY BEEMAZE
ANATOMYOF A
BEEBees work very hard! They leave the hive at sunrise and return from the last flight at sunset. During these travels, the worker gathers not only nectar and pollen, but also water and propolis (bee glue).
Help these bees find their way back to the hive. Make sure you stop along the way to pick up the nectar, pollen, water and propolis.

BEELearn about all the different part of the bee with the diagram below. Colour it in once you’re done too!
1. HEAD The head is the part of the insect that contains the brain, the eyes, the proboscis, and the mandibles - the two antennae are attached to the head.
4. WINGS Bees have 2 sets of wings. The FOREWING and the HINDWING. These wings attach together with tiny hooks to make one large wing when the bee flies!
7. LEGS Adult bees have six legs attached to the thorax.
2. ANTENNA One of two sensory appendages attached to the head of adult bees.
5. ABDOMEN The segmented tail area of a bee that contains the heart, wax glands and most of the digestive system.
8. MANDIBLES A pair of plier-like jaws - located on the lower side of the head. They are used to carry things, construct and clean the hive and release pollen from flowers.
3. THORAX The body section between the head and the abdomen - the legs and wings attach to the thorax.
6. POLLEN BASKETS Areas located on the hind legs. Used for carrying pollen back to the hive.
9. COMPOUND EYE One of two large eyes that are made up of many hexagonal lenses.

These eyes help the bee see the food part of the flower in a different colour than the non-food part making it easier for the bee to gather what it needs. Help this bee see the differences between these two flower beds.
