Principal’s Message

What a fabulous school we have! Bundarra Central School has had many opportunities to shine and engage with our community. Our Boys and Girls Touch Teams were hugely successful on the field at the Central School’s Touch Competition. It was pleasing to hear so many positive comments about their sportsmanship both on and off the field. Our Girls Primary Touch Football Team backed up the success winning 8 - 1 against Moree Public in the Primary Girls Touch football knockout.

Equally as important seven of our Year 5/6 students engaged in a two day STEM camp held at Thalgarrah Environmental Centre. The students participated in activities that involved the essential skills of problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork. The newspaper fashion competition was great fun and we seem to have some budding designers in our school.

Opportunities to learn more about our beautiful country to the form of our excursions to the Goonoowigall State Conservation land. The students are learning about our rich heritage and enjoyed their walk around the area.

It was a pleasure to attend the CWA Biggest Morning Tea this week with a number of selected students who have shown a commitment to our community. There may be a possibility of some of the CWA women coming to the school to teach the students some knitting skills next semester. Our Year 11 and 12 students attended a Residential at Dubbo in which they received additional focus on their selected subject areas. This year there has been an extra focus on supporting our Senior students in their endeavours to achieve their dreams at the end of school.

Our staff is committed to delivering quality education to our students. On Tuesday, all the staff participated in the first of our professional workshops to reboot PBL in the school. Mrs Cathy Archer from the New England Tablelands education office is supporting us in this area. Mrs Blake, Mrs Dezius and Mr Sims will be leading the Sapphire Community network hub meetings. It is wonderful that Bundarra Central School is able to contribute to our wider educational community in this manner. The next two weeks will continue to be filled with opportunities for our students to shine and grow.

Mrs Jennifer Cox Principal

Secondary News

Bundarra touch is still going strong. Congratulations to our boys team who played extremely well in the 16’s and Open’s at the Central Schools touch competition on the 7th and 8th of June. Being a young side and mostly made up of 14year olds, the boys represented Bundarra with pride and showed great sportsmanship over the 2 days of the carnival. Congratulations to our Girls teams who went through the two-day competition undefeated. The girls will now travel to Dubbo in Term 3 to defend the 16s title and hopefully regain the opens title. Finally, congratulations to our open Primary girls who have progressed to the next round of the PSSA knockout by defeating Moree on Friday 9th of June. Bundarra Secondary students have been spending some time in the work force in preparation for life after school. Some of the students have commented on these experiences as can be seen in the accompanying passages. Mr Jeremy Budda-Deen Head Teacher Secondary (Relieving)

In Week 6, Breony and I went to Armidale for a week at the Armidale Ex Services Club to do work experience as part of our work placement for Hospitality. The first day we started, we made heaps of salads, cut vegetables, put them in containers to be put in fridge storage. We made toasty’s, dated them and put them in the fridge storage also. We did split shifts in the morning from 9am to 2pm and in the evening from 5pm to 9pm. When we went back for the 5pm shift, we helped serve food, preparing vegetables and meats and cleaning. This was a very useful experience towards our schooling and life after school. Zoe Blair Year 12

Townsville Work Experience On the 29th of May 2017 I was lucky enough to take part in an Aviation based work placement within the 5th Army Aviation Regiment Base, Townsville which uses Australia’s cargo and troop carrier aircraft. During this week I was exposed to the different aspects of army life and possible career paths. I was lucky enough to take a flight in an MRH-90 helicopter which was by far the highlight of this experience. I was able to speak to pilots which gave me advice on subjects that need to be taken at school to become a pilot. While I was on base I was fortunate enough to use the bases high class training facilities such as the WTSS fire arms training system and the MRH-90 simulator. I would like to thank the Defence Force for this opportunity and would recommend it to anyone considering a career in the Defence Force. Luke Berry Year 10

During Week 7, Thomas Grant, Jakob Sullivan, Chloe Jamieson and I travelled to Dubbo for Residential classes. We convened with our teachers throughout the day and took part in afternoon and night activities including, bowling and flipout. Chloe and Thomas attended HSC seminars what were extremely beneficial. Overall, it was a worthwhile experience and we would like to thank Mr Sims for accompanying us. Bianca Nelson Year 11

Royal Life Saving Visit

Last Friday, students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 participated in a Royal Life Saving workshop. The program, NSW Primary School CPR Awareness Campaign was delivered by Cameron McFarlane, trainer and assessor from the Royal Life Saving. The students were shown how to correctly administer CPR on adults, teenagers and babies. They were then given the opportunity to practice these skills on life size dummies. The students participation was excellent. Cameron commented on their enthusiasm, behaviour and good manners. Mrs Pam Doak Assistant Principal

BVEC students have been tackling some tricky projects and tasks over the past two weeks. As a collaborative team effort, another octagonal ‘yarning circle’ seat has been completed by the students, ready now to be delivered to the school. I’m sure you will agree that the Eco-decking on RHS steel framing makes for a great looking, functional and long lasting piece of quality outdoor furniture, well done students! As a great method of practicing and developing positional welding as well as dissimilar thickness material welding, students have been creating a number of great metal art projects. Some examples of which can be seen in the attached photos. A new sign for the BVEC Auto shed can also be seen attached, with some accurate plasma cutting and welding resulting in a tricky looking product. Mr Dru Beaton

Sports Report

The last few weeks have been very busy with sport at Bundarra Central School. Our Primary girls team played against Moree Public School in Touch Football and won 8-1 after a 40 minute game. We congratulate the girls for a fantastic effort and wish the two girls with injuries a speedy recovery. The girls will now go on to the next round to play the winner of Ross Hill and Inverell Public School. Thank you to the Sport and Rec for use of your facilities and to Breony Vickery and Kimberley O’Donnell for refereeing the game. Secondary boys and girls Touch Football teams went on to play in the Central Schools Regional Touch competition held in Inverell at Rugby Park last week. The boys U16’s team played 6 games on the Wednesday, having a few draws, a win and a couple of losses. On Thursday the Open boys team also put in a gallant effort, drawing two, winning one and losing two. This was outstanding involvement by all students, they never gave up, including Brent O’Donnell who played his last competition in Central Schools Touch at Bundarra Central School. Well done to the boys. The girls team played very well both days in Inverell. They were undefeated on both Wednesday and Thursday and are Regional U16’s and Open Champions for 2017. The girls will now go onto Dubbo to the State Championship for Central Schools on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of August. In addition to this, a huge thank you to Lindsay Groth and Bec Smith (our P&C ladies) who ran the canteen on the two days in Inverell, there were lots of very positive comments made. To the students, staff and referees who assisted on the two days also a ‘huge’ thank you, without you, these days don’t go ahead. Good luck to Jarad Masterson, Elise Smith, Sarah O’Grady and Shanae Gleeson who compete in the Regional Cross Country in Coolah on Friday 16th June, we look forward to the results. Finally we wish our Open Girls and Boys North West Touch representatives the best of luck in Weeks 9 and 10, all 8 of them. Mr Nigel Henley Sports Coordinator

STEM Camp

On Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th June, Brianna Groth, Tahleah Gleeson, Hannah Palmer, Dakota Vickery, Karley Davis, Shanae Gleeson and Lilly Milton attended the STEM Enrichment Camp at Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre. In keeping with the STEM themes (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) the students participated in a wide variety of activities with an emphasis on Maths. These hands on activities were designed by a guest teacher from the University of New England. Mr Cox and Mr McKinzie organised night activities which, as well as being very enjoyable, gave the students a great opportunity to mix with peers from other schools in the district. A very worthwhile educational and social experience was enjoyed by all. A special thank you to all organisers, teachers and parents who contributed towards making this a very successful STEM Camp.
