The number system is based on well-defined structure.

Mathematics is a system for organizing the world quantitatively. It gives us tools to analyze, problem solve, and communicate about ourselves and our world. Numbers can represent quantity, position, location, and relationships.

As the place value chart is extended in each direction from the decimal point, what happens to the value of each position? How does the position of a digit in a number affect its value? How can I use models, words, and expanded formats to order and compare numbers?

EACS Car Rental is looking to expand to other cities across the United States. They are in the process of documenting the cost of gasoline in major cities, and they need your help. Your task is to find the cost of gasoline in at least five major U.S. cities. Write the cost in word form. You will then write five different math sentences comparing the prices of the gasoline. Next, order the gas prices from least to greatest for your cities. Place the actual price for each city on the number line. Finally, round the gas prices to the nearest tenth. Upon completion, submit two of your cities for consideration by EACS Car Rental. Teachers: vary the regions of the US assigned to your class. See Performance Task Templates at the end of the bundle. As an extension, collect the research sheets from the groups in your class. Identify the 3 highest gas prices and the 3 lowest gas prices. What is the difference in these prices? Why is there a difference (gas stations, region, area, population, etc.)? Write a paragraph explaining your thoughts about the difference in prices. See Extension Template at the end of the bundle.
