Denpasar, the capital city of Bali, is economically

based on tourism as a firm sector. It offers multiplier effect and brings a significant contribution to Balinese society in general and Denpasar City in particular. It’s regarded as a spirit to support other sectors involving

the advantages of development. This booklet provides tourism statistics, facilities, objects, and attractions in

Denpasar City.

It’s created to improve the quality of service in tourism and to establish tourism investments in

Denpasar City. We hope this booklet will enhance and provide your information about tourism in Denpasar

City.

Denpasar City was formerly a center of the southern Bali kingdom of Badung. It was conquered by the Dutch during the military expedition in 1906. Although it remained as the administrative center of the Badung Regency and

later it became the administrative center of Bali in 1958. After Denpasar City became an administrative center, Bali experienced unprecedented growth in physical, economic, social, and cultural.

Denpasar City is an administrative center, trading

center, education center, industrial center, and tourist

center. It has four districts, consists of West Denpasar District, East Denpasar District, South Denpasar District,

and North Denpasar District.

Denpasar City is located at an altitude of 0-75 m above sea level. With total area 127.78 km² or 2.18% of the total area of Bali Province. From the use of land, 2768 hectares of land are rice fields, 10,001 hectares is dry land and the remaining land area of 9 hectares is for other uses.

Denpasar, located in the south of the equator, it has a tropical wet and dry climate. With the hot and humid weather, and little temperature change throughout the year. Unlike many cities outside Indonesia with this climate, there is very little seasonal temperature change, with temperatures averaging about 28°c.

The year is divided into two seasons: wet and dry. The wet season lasts roughly from November to April, while the dry season lasts from May to October. The temperatures are not extreme, but the heat, combined with the oppressive humidity and copious precipitation, can be very uncomfortable at times.

Denpasar City has various attractions for a holiday.

The white sand beaches are well-known all over the

island. In the capital of Bali, there’s Sanur Beach with

calmer waters and isexcellent for sunbathing and

other water sports activities. The city also has temples,

Jagatnatha Temple is dedicated to the Supreme God

of Balinese Hinduism, Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa. There

are fascinating statues of a turtle and two mystical

dragons in the temple, signifying the foundation of

the world. Beside the temple, there’s a museum. Bali

Museum’s remarkable architecture resembles the

Bali’s royal palace. It contains an exceptional collection

of prehistoric and modern art. The famous Maospahit

Temple with its bare red brick is six minutes away from

Jagatnatha Temple.

There’s also exciting places like the government-

supervised art center and an art gallery. Bali Art Centre

is an arts center with occasional exhibits of paintings,

crafts, and sculptures. It’s also the venue for the annual

mid-year event, Bali Arts Festival, a festival with art

performances, exhibitions, and contests. For an art

gallery, there’s Sanggraha Kriya Hasta, home to a

tremendous variety of handicraft and works of art.

Di dalam Puri Agung Satria yang bersejarah ini terdapat pendopo yang pada zaman kerajaan digunakan sebagai tempat pertemuan raja seluruh Bali. Seperti puri-puri lainnya di Bali, Puri Kesiman merupakan tempat tinggal dan tempat persembahyangan para raja dengan keindahan arsitektur khas tradisional Bali. Puri ini juga menjadi pusat kegiatan kebudayaan untuk Kota Denpasar.

Puri Pemecutan dibangun pada abad ke-16 dan hingga saat ini masih menjadi tempat tinggal Raja Ida Cokorda Pemecutan beserta keluarga. Selain arsitektur bergaya tradisional Bali, Puri Pemecutan memiliki daya tarik lain yaitu terdapat satu set gamelan tradisional dan Pemerajan sebagai tempat persembahyangan keluarga.

Like other palaces in Bali, Kesiman Palace is a residence of the kings with the excellence of typical Balinese traditional architecture. It also uses as a center of cultural activities in Denpasar City.

Pemecutan Palace was built in the 16th century. It’s the residence of Ida Cokorda Pemecutan and his family. Besides the traditional Balinese architecture, Puri Pemecutan has another attraction. There is a set of traditional Gamelan and Pemerajan as an area to pray.

Pura Jagatnatha terletak di Kota Denpasar, tepatnya di Jalan Mayor Wisnu, sebelah timur Lapangan Puputan Badung I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung. Pura ini dikategorikan sebagai Pura Kahyangan. Jika dibandingkan dengan Pura Kahyangan atau pura lain di Bali, nama pura ini diambil dari nama gunung/desa yang berkaitan dengan pura yang terletak di area Pura Besakih dan pura lainnya.

Jagatnatha Temple is located in Denpasar City, precisely on Mayor Wisnu Street, east of Puputan Badung I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung Park. This temple is categorized as Kahyangan Temple. When compared to Kahyangan Temple or other temples in Bali, the name of this temple is taken from the name of the mountain/village associated with the temple located in the area of Besakih Temple and other temples.

Pura Sakenan adalah salah satu pura penting di Kota Denpasar yang terletak di Pulau Serangan. Nama Serangan berasal dari kata sira dan angen atau kangen/sayang. Pura Sakenan dibangun dengan latar belakang wujud syukur orang yang merasa kangen dengan keindahan alam pulau ini.

Sakenan Temple is one of the prominent temples in Denpasar City, located on Serangan Island. Serangan comes from the word sira and angen which means miss/love. They built Sakenan Temple based on the gratitude of people who longed for the natural beauty of this island.

Vihara Satya Dharma merupakan salah satu tempat ibadah bagi tiga agama (Tridharma) yang terletak di wilayah Pelabuhan Benoa. Dewata (Singbing) utama yang dipuja di Vihara Satya Dharma adalah Nezha. Selain itu, klenteng ini juga membangun altar untuk para Singbing yang berhubungan dengan keselamatan perjalanan, pelayaran, dan perdagangan.

Satya Dharma Temple is one of the places of worship for three religions (Tridharma), located in Benoa Port. The primary deity of this temple is Nezha. They also built a temple for the deities of travel safety, sailing, and business.

Kreneng Market has located approximately 2 km from downtown Denpasar City. This market sells a variety of basic daily necessities and textiles. This market is also known as the Senggol Angsoka Night Market. It serves various types of Chinese and Javanese food at affordable prices.

Monumen Bajra Sandhi merupakan Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Bali yang berada di pusat Kota Denpasar. Monumen ini merupakan suatu bentuk penghormatan kepada para pahlawan. Dikenal dengan nama Monumen Bajra Sandhi karena bentuknya seperti bel yang digunakan oleh Imam Hindu untuk membaca doa/mantra (Weda) pada upacara keagamaan.

Bajra Sandhi Monument is a monument to the struggles of the Balinese people throughout history located in the center of Denpasar City. This monument is a form of tribute to the heroes. It is known as Bajra Sandhi Monument because it shapes like a bell used by the Hindu Priests to recite prayers/mantras (Vedas) at religious ceremonies.

Upaya Pemerintah Kota Denpasar dalam melestarikan keadaan subak di Kota Denpasar dimulai dari memberikan bantuan kepada para petani sampai penataan subak sebagai ekowisata. Saat ini Pemerintah Kota Denpasar kembali melestarikan Subak Anggabaya menjadi Subak Program Kampung Iklim (Proklim) dengan melakukan penanaman 150 pohon langka.

The Government of Denpasar City attempts to preserve subak in Denpasar City by providing help to farmers and design it to be the ecotourism. Currently, the Government preserves Subak Anggabaya to be Subak Program Kampung Iklim (Proklim) by planting 150 rare trees.

Subak Sembung adalah salah satu ekowisata Desa Peguyangan, Denpasar Utara. Ekowisata Subak Sembung sangat cocok dijadikan salah satu destinasi wisata saat berkunjung ke Kota Denpasar. Pengunjung dapat menikmati keindahan sawah yang luas dan menikmati jajanan khas Bali.

Museum Le Mayeur bertempat di Pantai Sanur sekitar 30 meter dari arah utara Hotel Grand Bali Beach. Museum ini merupakan museum khas dan memorial yang dikelola oleh dan di bawah Museum Bali. Koleksi utama museum ini berupa 88 lukisan hasil karya maestro Belgia terkenal, Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres.

Melasti adalah upacara pensucian diri yang dilaksanakan oleh seluruh umat Hindu di Bali untuk menyambut hari raya Nyepi. Upacara Melasti dilaksanakan di pinggir pantai dengan tujuan mensucikan diri dari segala perbuatan buruk pada masa lalu dan membuangnya ke laut. Prosesi upacara melasti adalah suatu momen unik dan menjadi daya tarik bagi wisatawan.

Melasti is a purification ceremony performed by all Hindus in Bali to celebrate Nyepi. The ceremony takes place on the beach to purify themselves from all the bad deeds in the past and throw it into the sea. The procession of Melasti Ceremony is a unique moment and becomes an attraction for tourists.

Pawai Ogoh-ogoh diadakan pada hari Pengerupukan atau Ngerupuk yang jatuh sehari sebelum hari raya Nyepi. Upacara Pengerupukan dilakukan untuk mengusir Bhuta Kala atau kejahatan dari lingkungan sekitar. Pengerupukan dimeriahkan dengan Pawai Ogoh-ogoh yang merupakan perwujudan Bhuta Kala yang diarak keliling lingkungan dan kemudian dibakar.

Ogoh-ogoh Parade is held on the day of Pengerupukan or Ngerupuk, falls on the day before Nyepi. Pengerupukan Ceremony is performed to get rid of Bhuta Kala or evil from the environment. Ogoh-ogoh is a representation of Bhuta Kala, people parade it around and then burn it.

Nyepi adalah hari raya umat Hindu yang dirayakan setiap Tahun Baru Saka berdasarkan kalender Bali. Hari raya Nyepi bertujuan untuk introspeksi diri dengan menjalankan “Catur Brata” Penyepian yang terdiri dari amati geni (tidak menggunakan api), amati karya (tidak bekerja), amati lelungan (tidak bepergian), dan amati lelanguan (tidak mendengarkan hiburan).

Nyepi is a Balinese “Day of Silence” that is commemorated every Saka New Year according to the Balinese calendar. Nyepi is a day reserved for self-reflection, anything that might interfere with that purpose is restricted such as no lighting fires, no working, no traveling, no entertainment or pleasure, for some, no talking or eating at all.

Omed-omedan adalah upacara yang diadakan oleh pemuda-pemudi Banjar Kaja, Sesetan, Denpasar yang diadakan setiap tahun. Omed-omedan diadakan setelah Hari Raya Nyepi. Omed-omedan melibatkan 40 pria dan 60 wanita yang berumur 17 hingga 30 tahun dan belum menikah. Peserta pria dan wanita tarik-menarik menggunakan tangan kosong dan kemudian disirami air oleh masyarakat.

Omed-omedan is a ceremony held every year by the youths in Banjar Kaja, Sesetan, Denpasar. It’s held after Nyepi. Omed-omedan involves 40 men and 60 women aged 17-30 years old and unmarried. Male participants pull and kiss the female participants while other villagers pour buckets of water over them.

Pengerebongan merupakan upacara keagamaan yang dilakukan di Pura Agung Petilan di Desa Kesiman, Denpasar Timur. Tradisi yang berasal dari kisah Rangda (Ratu Iblis) memaksa umat untuk menusuk diri dengan keris, tetapi mereka dilindungi oleh Barong agar tidak terluka. Pura Agung Petilan terletak kurang lebih 4 km dari Kota Denpasar danmudah dijangkau baik dengan transportasi pribadi maupun umum.

Pengerebongan is a religious ceremony performed at Agung Petilan Temple in Kesiman Village, East Denpasar. The tradition is derived from the story of Rangda (Queen of the Devil) who forces people to stab themselves with a kris (traditional dagger), but the mighty Barong protects them to keep them from getting hurt. Agung Petilan Temple is approximately 4 km from Denpasar City and easy to get to by private or public transportation.

Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB) merupakan agenda rutin tahunan Pemerintah Provinsi Bali. Sanur Fiesta merupakan pergelaran yang diselenggarakan oleh Karang Taruna Asta Dharma, Desa Sanur Kaja. Acara ini dipadukan dengan Pekenan Lais Meseluk Kecamatan Denpasar Selatan. Tersedia berbagai stand-stand kuliner dan fashion untuk memanjakan pengunjung. Sanur Fiesta mengambil tempat di Lapangan Letda Made Pica, Sanur Denpasar.

Mertasari Beach Festival adalah acara internasional gratis yang diselenggarakan di Pantai Mertasari, Sanur Denpasar.
