Helping our communities to live

longer, healthier, happier livesBeyond the health and care that we provide to our customers, we also work to make a positive impact on the communities in which we operate. As well as contributing to local economies, we take care of our social and environmental responsibilities.

This is a natural part of our purpose of helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives. I’m very proud of the work that we’re doing to support our communities across the Bupa world. Our Foundations support research, health programmes and social initiatives to create a healthier society. We also have wider community programmes, big and small. It is a true reflection of our Bupa values. This report brings to life some of these initiatives. They are a major driver in our commitment to being a responsible and sustainable business.

Lord Leitch, Chairman

“I’m very proud of the work that we’re doing to support our communities across the Bupa world.”

Bupa UK Foundation The Bupa UK Foundation funds practical projects that make a positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing.

It focuses on the factors that underpin good health – such as mental health, ageing well, preventing long-term conditions, healthy living, and behaviour change – to improve health and wellbeing.

More than 50 projects were supported in 2017, with key focus areas including midlife mental health, healthy futures, and caring for carers.

Some of the projects the Bupa Foundation has supported in recent years include:

• Deafblind Scotland, which offers coaching for young people with dual sensory impairment

• The Chequers Community Kitchen: Mood Food project, which teaches people to develop healthy relationships with food, and

• CLIC Sargent, an online platform which brings young cancer patients together to share information and advice, building a community.

Over £380,000 awarded in grants in 2017

The Bupa Health Foundation is one of the leading charitable foundations dedicated to health in Australia. Since 2005, we have invested more than AUD30m (c. £16.2m) to improve health outcomes for the Australian community.

The Foundation has invested in over 110 partnerships across the country and we remain committed to contributing to a strong economy by helping promote better health for all Australians.

Bupa Health Foundation, Australia

Some of the projects we’ve supported in recent years include:

• The First 1,000 Days Partnership between the Bupa Health Foundation, Bupa Australia and New Zealand, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Australian Research Alliance for Children & Youth, and Pricewaterhouse Coopers Australia. The first output of this partnership is the The First Thousand Days report, which highlights the significance of the first thousand days – from conception to the end of a child’s second year – for a child’s future health and development.

• The Emerging Health Researcher Award, offered annually by the Bupa Health Foundation, recognises Australia’s future leaders in health and medical research. Now in its 7th year, this prestigious award acknowledges the valuable contribution of emerging researchers towards improving health and healthcare in Australia and around the world.

• The PROMPT-Care pilot project, a digital system to capture information from a cancer patient over their treatment journey and share with their clinician prior to consultation. This empowers patients to provide direct and thoughtful feedback to the clinical team and allows for improved care and better health outcomes. The system has now been implemented in a major cancer service in Sydney.

Sanitas Foundation, SpainThe Sanitas Foundation focuses on activities promoting health, wellbeing and improving quality of life. Its flagship programme, Inclusive Sport, encourages both children and adults with and without disabilities to play sports together.

The Foundation has promoted Inclusive Sport since 2009, setting up a dedicated centre together with the Polytechnic University of Madrid, with the aim of promoting and communicating the benefits of sport between people with and without disabilities.

Some of the projects we’ve supported in recent years include:

• In 2017, we held our 8th Inclusive Sports Week. More than 500 children took part, culminating in a record-breaking 1,600-strong penalty shootout, raising awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles and social integration of children with disabilities through sport.

• In 2017 we invested around ¤1 million (c. £871,000) to support social initiatives. This took our total investment since 1996 to ¤12m (£10m).

• Since 1996 the Sanitas Foundation has offered a Sanitas Médico Interno Residente Award, recognising medical interns who stood out the most during specialised training. In partnership with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, the award is the only one of its nature in Spain, now offered in over 200 hospitals with teaching accreditation across the country.
