What is SOII?• SOII is the annual Survey of Occupational Injuries

and Illnesses from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. This survey is conducted each year to provide an estimate of the number of non-fatal work related injuries and illnesses and a measure of the incidence (rate) at which they occur.

2009 Occupational Injuries & Illnesses: Raw Numbers

• Indiana industries with the highest number of occupational injuries and illnesses in 2009 are consistent with the 2008 data and include:

– Manufacturing (21,500)

– Healthcare and social assistance (16,600)

– State and local government (15,300)

Non- fatal Rates by Industry

Manufacturing

• Manufacturing is the state’s largest employer.

• 19% drop in non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses in 2009 over 2008.

• 21,500 injuries/illnesses reported in 2009 (9,300 fewer than 2008).

Construction

• Indiana’s Construction industry rate remained unchanged in 2009 (same as previous year).

• 5,600 non- fatal worker injuries and illnesses

(700 fewer than 2008).

Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing & Hunting

• The Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing & Hunting industry experienced the greatest rate drop of any major Hoosier industry in 2009—63%.

Healthcare & Social Assistance

• Healthcare & Social Assistance industry experienced a modest increase in non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses in 2009.

• The 2009 non-fatal rate is 16% lower than 1999 rate.

Transportation & Warehousing

• Nearly 60% reduction in work-related injuries and illnesses in 2009 over 1999.

• 600 fewer work-related injuries and illnesses in 2009 over 2008.

Mining

• The Hoosier Mining industry experienced a 13% rate drop in 2009 over 2008.

State & Local Government

• The Indiana State & Local Government sector experienced a 12% drop in non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses in 2009 over 2008.

Professional & Business Services

• 33% drop in the rate of worker injuries and illnesses in 2009 over 2008.

Retail Trade

• 10,200 Hoosier workers in the Retail Trade industry reported a work-related injury or illness in 2009.

• 12% rate drop from 2008 to 2009.

Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

• The Hoosier Arts, Entertainment & Recreation industry reported a 14% increase in work-related injuries and illnesses in 2009 over 2008.

Accommodation & Food Services

• 12% rate drop from 2008 to 2009.

• 32% rate reduction from 2003 to 2009.
