Seedsarethemaincomponentonthesuccessofcropproductionsystem.TheBureauofPlant Industry is mandated to ensure the supply of high quality seeds and plantingmaterialsthroughRepublicAct7308andassistanceonthedevelopmentandpromotionoftheOrganicAgricultureinthePhilippinesthroughRepublicAct10068.

In 2012, BPI started the adoption of the program in partnership with Bureau ofAgricultural Research on a project in developing a National Organic Rice Seedproduction system in collaborationwith private-public sectors to established organicrice seedproductionareasandbroadens thescience-basedknowledgeoforganic riceseedproductiontechnologies.

Meanwhile, organic seed production technologies on vegetableswere also developedthrough our BPI- National Crop Research, Development and Production SupportCenters. BPI has now maintaining a total of 19 hectares of certified organic seedproductionareas.

BPI-LosBañosproducingcertifiedorganicseedsoflowlandvegetablessuchaseggplant,pole sitao,mungbean, ampalaya, tomato, squash, cucumber, cowpea,okraand spongegourd.Maintaining3hectares of organic seedproduction areas located at LosBaňos,Laguna.

BPI-Baguioproducingcertifiedorganic seedsof semi-temperate crops suchasgardenpea,sweetpea,pechay,lettuce,seedpiecesofwhitepotato,runnersofstrawberryandcoffee seedlings.Maintaining 2.5 hectares of organic seed production area located atBuguias,Benguetandon-stationproductionofstrawberryandcoffeeatGuisad,BaguioCity.

BPI-LaGranjaproducingcertifiedorganicseedsoflegumesandplantationcropssuchassoybean, peanut, corn, upland rice, corn and plantingmaterials of sweet potato andcassava.Maintaining8.42hectaresoforganicseeds&plantingmaterialsarealocatedatLaCarlota,LaGranja,NegrosOccidental.

BPI-Davao producing certified organic seedlings of tropical fruits such as durian,pummelo,cacao,calamandarinandbananaalsosomeseedsofOPVcornandvegetablesasintercroptofruitorchard.Maintaining5hectaresoforganicfruitorchardlocatedatBagooshiro,DavaoCity.

BPI-Guimarasdevelopedaprotocolforproductionoforganicmangoandcashewwhichhas now ready for applying organic certification. They also produced cowpea andmungbeanseedsasintercroptomangounderorganiccondition.

Through the efforts of BPI implementing units and centers for continuous promotionandimplementationoftheprogram,atotalof2,000kgoftraditionalvarietyorganicriceseedswas distributed to DA-RFO 1 andDA-RFO4Awith beneficiaries of 9 provinces.Likewise, over 812 kg of organic corn given to 1 group and 220 individuals anddistributed742kgofassortedorganiclowlandvegetablesseedswith1,658individualsand5groupsandduringthetrainings,seminars,fielddays,exhibits,tradefairsandasrequestedfromtheoffice.

BPIdistributedalso35kgoforganicsemi-temperatevegetablesseeds,5,175piecesofstrawberry runners, 2,000 pcs. coffee seedlings, 2,700 kg white potato given to 130beneficiariesand3groups.

BPIDavao produced asexually propagated 2,500 pcs. of durian, 250 pcs. of pummeloand7,090pcs.ofcacaowhiledistributed2,816pcs.ofdurian,1,800pcs.ofcacaoand156pcs.ofpummeloto186individuals.

Inaddition,atotalof1,500pcs.ofbotanicalplantsand900pcs.ofherbsandspiceswasdistributedto47beneficiaries.

Furthermore,organicpestmanagementinputsalsoknownasbiologicalcontrolagents(BCA) with a total of 64,289 pieces of predators (details: 54,165 pcs. of Chilocorus,4,400pcs.ofDiadegma,3,119pcs.oflacewingand2,605pcs.ofEarwig),6,639bagsofbeneficial fungi (details:4,627bagsof trichoderma,507bagsofmetarhizium&1,505bagsof beauveria), 460 stripsof trichogrammadistributed to163 individuals and15groups.

BPI also established partnership with potential collaborators, farmer’s group,associations and cooperatives for organic seed production as well as extend ourtechnical assistance in different parts of the country particularly in CALABARZON,NegrosIsland,CordilleraAdministrativeRegion,VisayasandMindanao.

Four Farmers Field Days were conducted with a purpose of showcasing the organicseed production technologies developed by BPI through research to the farmers anddistributed5,100piecesofIECmaterialsto2,200individuals.

Ten special trainings and forty seminars/ lecture demo conducted with BPI centersinitiativesas to trainandspreadknowledgeanddifferent techniquesonorganic seedproductionto587individualswhoventureonorganicagriculture.Inaddition,wealsoconductedanationaltrainer’strainingfororganicseedproductionwhichparticipatedby75technicalstaffsfromDA-RFO’snationwide.

Tofurtherenhancetheproductionoforganicseedsandplantingmaterials,acquisitionof35agriculturalequipmentandmachinerieswerealsodoneforfarmmechanizationoforganicseedsinBPICenters.Likewise,fourorganicseedstoragelocatedinBPIDavao,Baguio,LaGranjaandGuimaraswasupgradedandfullyutilized.
