Subjeott Conatruotion ot type A cranes • stream-ga.ging equipment • Denver Hydraulic Laboratory.

1. The type A crane, ae shown in figure 1, la used tor stream-flow

measurementa on bridgee where ourrent meter weights between 30 and 75

pounds are moessary • This crane is mounbed on three wheels designed

to hold the current meter and weight in a balanced position while moving

between stations (figure lA) •. For stream meaeurement the oram.e is

tilted to lean against the bridge rail so the boom extends the current

meter and weight olear of the bridge (figure lB). To taoili tate trans

portation by truck or oar, the orane may be folded into a oompaot unit.

First, the current meter, Wlitight, reel, and protractor are removed, then

the folding proceeds as ehawn cm figure 2 • A turther deaoripticm of

thia crane aild its use is given on papa 203-.204 or "Stream-gaging proce-

4un • Geological SUl"VGy' Water•eupply Paper J88 ," a manual describing

methods and practices or the Oeologioal Survey.

2 • This crane waa dea1gned by the u. s. Engineer otfiee at

01.noimtati. Ohio• and the u. 8. Geological Surwy at Columbus, Ohio. They

are uae4 prino1pa.lly by- the Geological 8UM'GY and prior to the war, the

needs ot the Bureau ot Reclamation were turm.ehecl by the Geological

Survey. Jiowever, when three cranes were requisitioned tor Central Valley

Project, about January 1, l-9415, the Geological Survey was unable to

turnish them. Instead, they furnished a set ot blueprints to permit the

ore.nee to be built ill 1:lhe ehop ot the hydraulio laboratory of the Bureau

ot Reolamation in Denver.

3. S1noe May, 1942, ourrent meters belonging to the Bureau o:t

Reclamation have been repaired in the hydraulie laboratory aa described

in Hydraulic Report Noe 185 o Through this work the personnel have

become familiar with other stream-gaging equipment including .the type A

crane e Therefore, they were in a good position to build the oranes •

Materials for .fiw were ordered., three for the Central Valley Projeot and

two for stock., the latter in keeping with the policy of the laboratory

to maintain a reserve ot equipment to expedite deliveries to the field.

, • Due to wartime conditions, a period of several months waa re•

quired to obtain materials .. During this delay a crane borrowed trom

the Denver offioe ot the Geological Survey was studied w1 th the object

ot making improvements. A set ot jigs was made which would permit

speedy oonatruotion ot the five cranes ordered and any others needed in

the future. Through this preliminary preparation., the oranea were built

without incident onoe the material arrived, and the three ordered by the

Central Valley Project shipped to their destination.

6 o New drawings were prepared. figures -s. 4, and 6, because a

number ot minor ohangea were made to improve the dea1gno The purpose ot

these changes was to simplify construction, permit the orane to told

into a more compact bundle, and to make it work better. fhe revisions

inoluded1

a. Reduce several members from 3/16•inch to 1/B•inoh angles,

when a load on the crane borrowed tram the Geological Survey

indicated that the latter were euttioient.

bo The main strut. mark l or figure S, originally consisted

ot two separate members bolted together ., to permit folding of the

crane. The neoesaity ot two members waa eliminated by changing the

conneotor, mark 29, from an L to a T""shape.

c. Thie revision to the connector, :mark 29, also permitted

the strut mark 4, to told closer to the main etruto

do To further facilitate folding ., the tension member., mark

10 and 11, was reversed, and the bar, mark 11, was bent at 8-1/2

degrees as shown.

2

Page 4: Bureau of Reclamation€¦ · bo The main strut. mark l or figure S, originally consisted ot two separate members bolted together., to permit folding of the crane. The neoesaity ot

e, the c&ilter wheel, mark 48 11 on the struts, mark 2 •

did not told properly, &nd at the same time the wheel at the

end of the boom prevented the bar, mark 8 :t'rom dropping into

plaoe when f'olded. lotehH 1n the a?J.gle, mark S, and plate,,

:mark 20, oorrected both eonditions.

r. the eize of the plate, mark 22, was reduced by using a

tlat•headed, insulated conntlOtion as shown in detail Ao

g. Action ot the spreader, mark 42, waa oonsidere.bly

improved by outting a 30•4egree beftl on the spreader ends, and

bushing the hole with a brass sleeve (see detail in tigure 6).

ho The use of the orane in the f'ield was hampered by a

tendenoy ot the oonneotion at the crown to open when the ora.n.e

was being moved. Thia condition waa alleviated by changing the

direction ot the alet in mark 2 , modi.tying the slot in mark 25

and providing the clamp mark 30. - - -
