Notes of Appreciation

SECU Family House - “Dear Katie/United

Methodist Church, Toilet Paper — oh my!

Your gifts help our families get by! Thank

you!”

“Dear Burkhead UM Church Family,

The family of Wayne Raker is grateful and thankful for the love, support, and friendship you provided to us during our time of sorrow and grief over his death. Words are not equal to describe our feelings.

Wayne loved each and every one of the

members of his "church family". Thank you

for your prayers, presence at his service, and all the many ways you loved and supported him, especially after his automobile accident in 2017. We are especially grateful for the meal provided after the service. It provided a wonderful opportunity for us to meet with our extended family and friends!

A special thanks to those who have made gifts to the Church in memory of Wayne. It is a

perfect way to honor his life.

MAY GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU AND THE LIFE OF BURKHEAD CHURCH

Josh & Kimberly Raker, Kyra, Tyler, & Kyla

Maurice & Elinor Raker

Barry & Linda Raker and family

Brenda Raker-Gentry and family”

“Dear Burkhead Members -

Thank you very much for the lovely fern you sent to me in remembrance of my daughter, Karyn. The fern is lovely and I will think of my Burkhead family each time I look at it. Karyn grew up in Burkhead and has fond memories of her time there. I am grateful to have each of you in my life.

Sincerely, Brenda”

The last Memory Café of 2019 will be held Wednesday, October 16th from 1 to 3 pm at Senior Services, 2895 Shorefair Drive. It’s a comfortable, casual gathering place for anyone experiencing memory loss, mild cognitive impairment or dementia and their caregivers to socialize, listen to music, play games and connect with others. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information, please contact Alyssa Botte at 336-716-4683.

Wednesday Night Dinners to Resume

The Wednesday Night dinners will resume on October 23rd at 6 pm. The New Life Class has volunteered to host with a menu of Chicken and Rice, salad and dessert. The usual cost of $6 per person, youth and first-time guests free will be in place. The sign-up sheet is on the Information Table.

The November 13th Wednesday Night dinner will feature a “Potluck” menu. We would sign up as usual for the meal, but everyone

coming will be asked to bring their favorite casserole or dessert. (Who knows but we could get ALL desserts or ALL Mac & Cheese.) The fun will be in the “not” knowing the final menu.

There is no charge for this meal since the “eaters” are providing the food, but we propose to ask for donations of money or canned goods for Storehouse for Jesus and Catholic Charities.

The December Wednesday Night dinner is tentatively planned for 11th. We are looking for a group to host this special time. Please contact Betty Bewley or the church office.

We plan to continue these fellowship meals once a month in the new year. We need volunteers to host the meal. SO…start talking to your friends about hosting a meal. The host team will choose their meal and can change the date if necessary.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Jo Thomas and I are set to begin Monday, September 30th at 6 pm. Our fir st meeting will be in the Parlor, but I am working with the Trustees for a room of our own since the Parlor is used frequently for other meetings, etc. At the Back to Church Sunday, I received our first request for a shawl or lap cover. The family is to let me know the decision. There is room for others who wish to join us. There will always be an open invitation. - Beth Dixon

ANNUAL PORT-A-PIT CHICKEN BBQ FUNDRAISER

Well, we are one month closer or one month away from Saturday, November 2nd, from 11 am - 7 pm - OUR ANNUAL PORT-A-PIT CHICKEN BBQ. As always, volunteers are needed to help in the kitchen, Fellowship Hall serving our customers, baking brownies or pound cakes for take-out, baking, cutting and wrapping desserts for eat-in meals, baking treats for the Bake Sale, and cleaning up after the event. There isn’t an expectation for members to work the entire day unless they desire to do so. Help in any form will be greatly appreciated. There will be sign-up sheets on the information table Sunday, October 6th.

As we have this fundraiser in addition to helping and baking, selling tickets is the most important thing we all need to do. If we don’t sell, we don’t have customers. If we don’t sell, we don’t make money to help pay for the new windows and roof. If we don’t have customers, we can’t help those who are hungry. I could go on and on, but that doesn’t sell tickets. We, the members of Burkhead, will ask Gloria McGurk for a bundle of tickets to sell to our friends, family, and neighbors, buy as thank you's to friends, or buy for someone you have been wanting to do something nice for. Gloria has tickets right now for you to get started selling.

Let us all get behind and support this FUNDRAISER FOR OUR CHURCH and make it a huge success. - Beth Dixon

Outreach Opportunities Gale Sink

Project Agape Report

Thank you to all those who filled Shoeboxes with gifts for the children in Armenia for Project Agape's Christmas distribution. Burkhead folks filled 16 boxes that have been delivered to the Mission Response Center near Charlotte to be sent on to Armenia. If any group from the church would like to visit the Mission Response Center and help with checking boxes or flood buckets before they are sent on, contact Dwaine Morgan at 828-478-2106.

Samaritan Ministries Penny Campaign

Did you know just a few coins can provide a hot meal or a safe and warm place for a homeless man to spend the night? Your pennies, quarters, and dollars all add up to provide many needed services. Any person in the community can get a good meal at lunchtime any day of the year at Samaritan Ministries, and around 80 homeless men are fed and housed every night. Volunteers cook and serve the meals and also stay overnight at the shelter. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact Anna Donze, volunteer coordinator, at 336-748-1962 Ext. 303.

October 1 is the kick-off date for this year's Penny Campaign. You will find collection jars in the Sunday School classes and other locations around the church. Please drop in your coins and dollars to help Samaritan Ministries continue its mission to feed and house those in need in our community. The jars will be out during October and November. Let's fill the jars!

If you would like to know more about Samaritan Ministries, they will be holding a Community Open House on Sunday, September 29th from 2 - 4 pm. They are located at 414 E. Northwest Blvd, Winston-Salem.

It's Fair Time Again!

You can enjoy a day at the fair and help support Crisis Control Ministry on Wednesday, October 9th! You will receive free admission to the fair that day by bringing 5 cans or boxes of non-perishable food which will be donated to the food pantry

at Crisis Control Ministry. The volunteers will collect your cans near the gates and give you an admission ticket to the fair.

Burkhead to Feed the Mount Tabor High School JV Football Team

On Thursday, October 24th, Burkhead will be providing a meal for the Junior Varsity Football team at Mount Tabor High School before their game that night. If you are available to help with this meal, please contact Beth Dixon or Reverend Carl Manuel. It is a great witness to these young men to show them that our church cares about them. We have done this for the past few years and we are happy to be able to do it again.
