burkhead, nebraska covet big ten football...

BY COLLEEN KANE © 2012 Chicago Tribune (MCT) — If Rex Burkhead is operating in the shadow of Wis- consin’s Montee Ball, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini doesn’t notice. “I wouldn’t trade him for an- other player in the country,” Pelini said after running through Burkhead’s accomplishments on the field, in the community and in the classroom. After rushing for 1,357 yards on 284 carries last season and winning over fans Nebraska-wide if not beyond, the 5-foot-11, 210- pound Burkhead gives the Big Ten a second All-America candi- date at running back along with 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Ball. But Burkhead doesn’t covet Ball’s Heisman campaign. It’s Wisconsin’s conference champi- onship last season that kept the senior in the film room learning to read defenses more quickly this offseason. Nebraska last won a conference championship game in the Big 12 in 1999 and failed to secure a berth in its first season in the Big Ten. The Cornhuskers won at least nine games in each of Pelini’s first four seasons, including a 9-4 finish last year, but Burkhead let on it wasn’t enough for the pro- gram, which won three national championships in the mid-1990s. “I’m just focused on the Big Ten championship,” Burkhead said, brushing off awards talk. “That’s where I want to get to.” Burkhead undoubtedly will carry Nebraska much of the way. In an All-Big Ten season as junior, he was two attempts shy of the school record of 286 car- ries in a season. He had 35 car- ries for 130 yards in a win against then-No. 9 Michigan State and a school-record 38 carries for 160 yards in a win against Iowa. Coaches have talked about cutting down Burkhead’s touches in an effort to keep him healthy this season. That would mean more on the shoulders of third- year starting quarterback Taylor Martinez and sophomore run- ning back Ameer Abdullah. Martinez passed for 2,089 yards and rushed for 874 yards last season. The Cornhuskers’ passing offense ranked 10th in the Big Ten with 162.7 yards per game. “This offense wants to be more balanced, and being more balanced will take some plays off Rex, will keep him stronger and healthier throughout the whole season,” senior tight end Kyler Reed said. “If we’re more balanced, what happens is teams won’t be able to stack the box on us. If we’re going deep, making good plays in the passing game, they’re going to have to respect the passing game a lot more than they did last year. That will open it up for Rex. It’s hard to run in between the tackles if you’ve got nine guys in there, eight guys in there.” Nebraska is in its second year under offensive coordinator Tim Beck, and Burkhead expects a noticeable difference. “You’ll see a lot more comfort- able offense, a lot more confident offense,” Burkhead said. “You’ll see guys that know where to line up immediately, know what play’s being called and are react- ing quicker.” Bloomfield COACH: Duane Wilken (39th year) VITALS: Class D, Lewis and Clark Conference LAST YEAR: The Bees placed eighth in the Class D state meet, but lost state champion Austin Hamm and 17th- place finisher Silas Oltjenbruns to gradu- ation.
