President  Simone Patterson stepped into the chair this morning for the first time and did a great job - especially considering she didn’t have a run sheet to start with!  For future reference to all those chairing our meetings there is a run sheet kept permanently with the breakfast items in “Doug’s box”.  President Catherine reported that it was a mighty proud moment to be the person making the formal speech at the dinner and that the feedback has been phenomenal. As CPT went around the room trying to thank everyone she was told many times that people did not realise what Rotary really does in the world. There are many live feeds on FB showing the speeches etc and up to 867 views as of today. At the changeover this year we will endeavour to have a good slide show made up. The go-fund me page is still live so keep spreading the word for Polio please. https://www.gofundme.com/endpolionowwithburleighrotary

Items on the Day  Richard (Spencer) - President Elect - will be reporting back from Currumbin Special Needs School after a visit scheduled soon to report back on how we may be able to help them.  His connection is that several of the children at the school attend Riding For the Disabled which is a project we currently support.  If anyone would like to join Richard and Rachel please contact him.  For new members and friends information: we have in the past donated funds to purchase new riding equipment and sponsorship for children with special needs to be able to enjoy horse riding.  Secondly, Richard and Allan have negotiated with Bunnings to have a BBQ on Saturday 10th June.  Please lock this date in as the club expects everyone to do their bit on the day.  1-2 hours max per person. (from 8am-3pm approx)   Allan reported that the Silent Auction for the Black Tie dinner to End Polio Now looks to have raised around $6,500.  This all needs to be confirmed by our Treasurer and although it was hoped this event would raise significant funds we are all grateful to have covered costs and made a little and raised awareness of Rotary and Polio at this first event (unconfirmed if Pres Elect Richard will be having a second….;)) A big thank you to Rotarians who attended or bought items at the auction including winning bidders Bren, Andy, Johnny and Lynda (sorry if I have forgotten anyone). The go-fund me page is still open and receiving donations for the Polio cause which is a fantastic effort by Pres Catherine in setting this up.  Allan also reported that we have a team of 4 entering the Gold Coast Ramble (put on by Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club). So far those attending will

be Catherine, Jacqueline P, Allan and Anthony. As this goes to print Richard, Allan and Andy have made donations totalling $500 which will put our club in a top running position! All donations can be made via the Gold Coast Ramble FB page here is the link https://heroix-au.everydayhero.com/event/goldcoastramble2017/hero_page/rotary-club-of-burleigh-haeds/donate This event will be raising awareness and help for homeless youth - you can donate as little as $10. Every attending Rotarian has paid out of their own pocket $32.19 and the price of travel for the day up and down the coast - so if you can’t attend please consider a small donation and thank you. Glenn and Rhiannon (Zach from our club’s partner) from Coolangatta Currumbin Tweed Club spoke about their club’s forthcoming dinner for a difference on Thursday 6th April at Signatures Restaurant, Tweed Heads $25/person to raise funds for Humaneity for the Tiny House Project at Helensvale State High School which produces small housing for the homeless and those dealing with domestic violence. RSVP direct to the club 0421 576 816 [email protected]

Johnny passed around a copy of the Gold Coast Bulletin with a feature article about the Black Tie Dinner to End Polio Now. What a coup! Well done JB on getting some great photos in - mainly the young guns of the night and sponsors plus the guest speaker Suzanne and our gorgeous Pres Catherine. JB mentioned that this event has been seen by many to have the “Wow” factor - is that another Rotary acronym for maybe “won our way”!! 225 people had dinner and 100 were non-rotarians.

Treasurer’s Desk Teresa is doing an amazing job bringing our club into this century and we now can accept credit card payment for breakfasts!! Thank you Teresa.

Guest speaker  Our speaker was Cameron who attended RYLA and was sponsored by our club.  He opened by relaying a message of thanks from Kim and emma who also attended.  Cameron, like many other new RYLA attendees was cynical, though it all sounded a bid dodgy on paper but decided it would go for it anyway.  The days rand from 5.30am until dark with no spare time - just to prove how much can be achieved in just one day!  It was life-changing, he met a whole new family and although some of the activities seemed to have no purpose the fact that there was no way out just pushed them all further.  Cameron believes the whole experience has given him hope for his future and self, he feels more certain about long term goals and aspirations in life and has learned that happiness and success are inside and about oneself.  Let’s keep supporting our youth programs.  THank you Cameron.
