UNSG SPECIAL ADVISOR TO BURMA ENDED
HIS VISIT TO BURMA
Just before he boarded the Silk Air plane for Singapore this evening at the end of his two-day visit to Burma, the Special Adviser Mr. Vijay Nambiar to the Secretary General of the
United Nations, gave a press conference at the Rangoon International Airport during which
he said he had met a broad range of stake holders during this two-day time including Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi and members of the NLD, as well as representatives of the some of the
major political parties, who participated in the November 7 general elections including
Democratic Party ( Myanmar ), National Democratic Force Party , Rakhne National Devel-
opment Party, Chin National Party, National Unity Party ( NUP ) and Union Solidarity and
Development Party (USDP).
As I held talks with many political parties, concerns were expressed by quite a number ofpolitical parties, which participated in the November 7 elections, regarding the process
and outcome of that elections, Vijay Nambiar said adding that in this connection he had
asked the government and Union Elections Commission to address these concerns as
transparent as possible. This is important for laying the foundation for a credible transition, Special Adviser to
UN Secretary General told the press.
Vijay Nambiar said in his talks with representatives of the government he had encouraged
the government to build on recent development towards national dialogue for reconcilia-tion and democratization in the post elections process.
In order to succeed for any political transition, it should be broad based and inclusive and
involved not only those who participated in the elections but also those who could not or
did not, Nambiar hit the point.
In this connection, I have also called for the release of all political prisoners, who still re-
main in detention, Nambiar continued to stress his point.
While reaffirming the UN long term commitment to continue to work with the governmentand the people of Burma in their efforts to address the political, humanitarian and devel-
opmental challenges facing their country, Vijay Nambiar said his two-day visit to Burma
was the continuation of the good offices of the dialogue between UN and Burma following
the last visit to Burma by UN Secretary General in July 2009.
The UN looks forward to continue this dialogue to direct engagement with all parties to
help advance national reconciliation and the establishment of democratic and civilian gov-
ernment in a way that contributes to Myanmars stability and development, Vijay Nam-
biar said saying that he hoped to come back to Burma again.
