In her homeland of Sudan, Lubna Abdelrahman had only a glancing connection to Christmas.

A Muslim, her family’s big celebrations centered around Ramadan and Eid, which move through the calendar according to the lunar cycles.

But half of Sudan’s population is Christian, so Abdelrahman had friends who celebrated Christmas.

And everyone enjoyed a holiday in late December, two days for the Muslim population, and three for the Christians.

In that time they visited each other’s

homes, exchanged small gifts. Sometimes they attended special seasonal carnivals.

When their own political beliefs forced Abdelrahman and her husband to immigrate to Canada as refugees 11 years ago, they landed in their new home smack in the middle of the Christmas season.

As they ventured from the welcome house where they first settled to acquire the first necessities of their new life, they were bombarded with the crazy consumerism that accompanies the season.

It was, says Abdelrahman, a little overwhelming.

“I saw all these people giving gifts from Santa,” says Abdelrahman.

“That was a shock. People try to do too much at once.”

A teacher in her homeland, with a natural instinct to learn and reach out to others, Abdelrahman started volunteering to help other refugees like herself acclimatize and get their bearings. She says she felt it was important to educate other newcomers about the culture she herself was still learning at the time. She went to a thrift store and bought a Santa hat.

“We must respect Canadian culture as part of our integration,” says Abdelrahman, who still wears the hat every Christmas season.

This year she’ll be hosting Christmas

dinner in her Burnaby home for the first time.

She’s already got a turkey and she took lessons on how to cook it. She’ll serve it with traditional Sudanese dishes like eggplant and chicken spiced with cayenne and garlic. Her guests will bring the cake.

The celebration, says Abdelrahman, is part of her ongoing quest to build bridges between cultures.

“By sharing your own culture, you are an ambassador of your culture,” says Abdelrahman.

“If we don’t participate in our new culture, we will never learn about it.”

A Christmas bridge from Sudan to Canada

mArIO bArTeL/NeWSLeADerWhen Lubna abdelrahman immigrated to Canada from Sudan 11 years ago, one of the biggest adjustments she had to make was learning about Canadian customs, especially the celebration of Christmas. As a nation of immigrants, many new Canadians, or those whose roots are elsewhere, celebrate Christmas by reforging the bonds to the culture and traditions of their homeland. When a friend showed up at the door of Katalina Camara’s Burnaby apartment one day in early December 19 years ago, bearing a beautifully scented pine tree and a smile, she was confused.

“It’s your first Christmas,” announced the friend. “This is how we celebrate.”

But in Camara’s native Hungary the tree isn’t put up until the night before Christmas. Then while the children are out for a walk, it’s decorated with frosted honey cookies and chocolate covered candies and surrounded with gifts “from the sky.”

Hungarian Christmas actually begins on Dec. 6 when St. Nicholas comes into town to place little offerings in carefully polished boots left in the windows by children. If they’ve been good, they’ll get chocolate, maybe an apple and some nuts. If they’ve been bad, they get a glittered tree branch.

“That’s very exciting stuff,” says Camara.

The next few weeks are spent in the kitchen, baking beigli, the traditional Hungarian Christmas cake, cookies, and preparing the fish soup and stuffed cabbage rolls to be served for Christmas dinner.

“Outside it’s cold, there’s usually snow, so it’s good to be together inside where it’s very warm,” says Camara.

In her town, Kaposvar, a big decorated tree is erected in the central square and many churches put on special Christmas concerts.

But the big day itself is reserved for families, who visit after attending midnight services.

“The whole of Christmas is very introverted,” says Camara. “It’s a family celebration.”

The tiled hearth that heats the living room in many Hungarian homes is the centrepiece of those gatherings. Family members sit on its ledge eating, telling stories, singing carols.

“Kind words and spending time together is what’s important,” says Camara. “Christmas is not about gifts.”

Christmas in Japan is a time for young lovers to take their relationship up a notch. The real celebrating for everyone else occurs a week later, at the turn of the calendar.

In between there is much preparation for the feast that kicks off the three-day New Year’s holiday.

Osechi Ryori are comprised of foods that are symbolic for things like wealth, fertility, happiness and a long life.

They are cooked well ahead of the holiday so nobody has to do any work on New Year’s day, then carefully packed into a tiered lacquered box called a jubako.

Central to the whole process is the mochi, steamed rice that has been ritually pounded in a large bowl with heavy

wooden mallets until it becomes sweet paste.

Mochi is traditionally only eaten at New Year’s and the pounding is often done with great fanfare at local community centres as spectators gather around. Modern technology though

has devised appliances that will make mochi on the countertop in moments.

On New Year’s Eve, families will often visit a shrine to pray for good luck. Some people fill out special cards to express their hopes and desires for the coming year.

“The idea is you want to start the new year off well,”

says Akiko Gomyo, the director of the Nikkei National Museum and Heritage Centre in Burnaby.

As families gather, usually at the grandparents’ home, for their New Year’s feast, they’ll fly kites, play card games like

Hyakonin, spin wooden tops or compete at a kind of badminton match, batting a feathered shuttlecock with elaborately decorated paddles.

Decoration for the season is minimal, banners hung on the walls expressing best wishes for the new year, hangings of straw and pine branches on the front door to keep evil from entering the home.

“It’s much simpler than it is here,” says Gomyo.

But exposure to western traditions is beginning to have an influence, says Gomyo. Commercial districts are decorated with bright lights for the holidays.

Advertisements for the latest and greatest products invade TV programming and roadside billboards. Businesses that used to stay closed to observe the three-day holiday now remain open to earn a few extra bucks.

“Then the sky was cleaner than usual” as factories shut for the holiday and traffic diminished,” says Gomyo.

Officially Korea is a Buddhist country.

But Western influences have helped make Christmas an increasingly recognized holiday, says Kim Okran, a Burnaby businesswoman and author who runs 20 English-language schools in Korea, Japan, Mexico, Vancouver, Victoria and Toronto.

In fact it’s the only country in East Asia to celebrate Christmas day with a public holiday.

While some Christians may attend mass or a church service on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, for most non-Christians the holiday is a chance to go shopping and celebrate with friends by going out for dinner at a restaurant.

“There is a lot less fanfare and presents,” says Okran.

“We don’t have special meals that Canadians have.”

But they do have a special Christmas cake, elaborately constructed confections decorated with chiffon, fresh berries and candy figurines depicting wintery scenes.

Some people put up a tree and

decorate their houses, but not until the holiday is imminent.

Santa makes his appearance

at shopping malls, handing out trinkets or chocolates, says Okran, but the acquisition and exchange of gifts is a lot more low-key than in the West.

“We usually exchange presents on Christmas Eve and instead of piles of presents, one present or a gift of money is customary,” says Okran, who immigrated to Canada 21 years ago.

Young people especially embrace the holiday, says Okran.

Young lovers will go to a movie theater or take in a show, while others will attend a party or go out carolling with friends. They reserve their family time for New Year’s.

“It has changed a lot to Western style of Christmas since I left,” says Okran.

• Okran’s self-published autobiography about her struggles as a new immigrant is titled Kim OK. To find out how to get a copy, email [email protected].

Resource centre gets a name

The new community resource centre being built as part of a development at the southwest corner of Rosser Avenue and Lougheed Highway now officially has a name. Burnaby council has approved calling it the Brentwood Community Resource Centre, in recognition of the geographical location of the site.

The stand-alone, two-storey building is being built as a city-owned community amenity by Embassy Developments adjacent to a 32-storey condo tower and townhouse project. When completed, expected in 2013, the 6,000-square-foot space will be home to Burnaby Community Connections, which operates the Christmas Bureau, Burnaby Meals on Wheels, MOSAIC and the childcare referral service of YMCA.

VICTORIA – NDP leader Adrian Dix has completed year-end interviews with members of the legislative press gallery. Here are highlights from my discussion with him.

TF: On the Kinder Morgan oil pipeline expansion proposal, federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair says the federal environmental process would have to be strengthened before a project like that could get a thorough enough hearing. Do you agree?

AD: The B.C. Liberal government has signed an equivalency agreement that says that the federal decision is the provincial decision on these projects. If it applies to Enbridge Northern Gateway, presumably the B.C. Liberals would apply it to Kinder Morgan.

They could have done a joint process, where [the final decision] would have gone to both cabinets. They chose instead to give up jurisdiction. They were so afraid of making any decision on Northern Gateway that they sent it over to the federal government.

So what we’ve said is within a week of coming to office, we would end that equivalency

agreement, and British Columbia would make decisions about both Enbridge Northern Gateway, which applied in May 2010, and any other pipeline, including the Kinder Morgan proposal, for which no application has been made.

Obviously it would have been desirable for everyone had they chosen a true joint review, as they have in Site C [dam proposed for Peace River], as they did with Kemess North [rejected mine expansion proposal] and other cases.

TF: You don’t want duplicated review processes here, you just want a provincial cabinet say in the decision?

AD: That’s right. TF: On your relationship with

the B.C. Federation of Labour, your caucus is considering a proposal that B.C. should once

again do away with secret ballots for union certification.

AD: The B.C. Fed makes a case to the government on a series of issues on employment standards every year. Labour law, every year. WorkSafeBC, every year. Trades and training, every year. With respect to [accepting signed union cards for certification], it is a democratic process that the Newfoundland Conservative government just put into place a few months ago. So it’s a proposal from the labour movement and we’re looking at it. For most of B.C.’s modern history, since World War II, we’ve had that card-check system in place. The question would be whether [returning to that system] is a priority for this term in government.

TF: So those kinds of things will be made clear in your platform?

AD: Absolutely.TF: You picked up some

serious money from the business community at a fundraiser in October. Is that some kind of a record for the NDP?

AD: [Laughs.] It might be a record, I don’t know. I think

the business fundraiser we did at the Hotel Vancouver netted $350,000. I think what it reflects is, this year I’ve had about 230 meetings with the business community. The purpose of it has been principally to build understanding, particularly on issues of skills training. With the priority I give to skills training, I think I’m much more attuned to their concerns than the government has been.

TF: I suppose that kind of success in fundraising might make it more difficult to follow through with your pledge to ban corporate and union donations.

AD: I don’t think so. The B.C. Liberal Party has a very high level of corporate donations as a percentage of its total. We’re overwhelmingly dependent on individual donations. We get support from unions, but it’s not even close to what people would think.

TF: So you’ll campaign for that, as you have before?

AD: Yes.

Dix seeks balance with business

Last week’s snow and ice storms may have brought a white Christmas prematurely, but they haven’t dampened the spirit of the season.

This is the time of year for families and friends to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

It’s a time for children’s eyes to alight with wonder and magic.

It’s a time for parties, with much laughter and fellowship.

It’s a celebration, both religious and secular.

It’s also a time of year when many of us connect with our roots, whether it’s traveling to visit far-flung family or blowing the dust off trinkets and traditions from generations past.

That’s especially true in Canada, a nation of immigrants.

For many, Christmas is an amalgam of Western traditions like turkey and colourfully wrapped presents under a decorated tree and their own cultural celebrations, a piñata hung from the ceiling, a feast of spicy sauces and flatbread, polished boots placed in the window awaiting gifts left in the night.

Some don’t even celebrate Christmas.

They gather a couple of weeks later according to the Julian calendar, or for the new year, or for Eid, the festive conclusion to Ramadan.

In our ever-changing world, filled with so much uncertainty, it’s traditions that ground us, keep us connected to where we came from, who we are.

They also weave the tapestry of our multi-cultural country.

Celebrating the season and creating new traditions is part of the magic of Christmas.

Here’s to a joyous one, however you celebrate.

Merry Christmas!

COMMENT

Re: Time to plan for a new climate (Letters, NewsLeader, Dec. 12)

Garth Evans raises an important issue in his Dec. 12 letter.

He is on the right track when he talks about catastrophic global warming.

However, he does not pursue the ideas to their logical conclusions.

First of all, it needs to be mentioned that scientists warned us about catastrophic global warming years ago, but nobody who mattered paid attention. (Thanks for nothing, Dubya.)

The most important requirements would have been that we give up airplane travel, individual motor vehicles except in rural areas, long-haul

trucking, war, and waste. Of course, none of the big nations will give up war, because they all have imperialist ambitions. As for the other requirements, those would only be possible with extreme government intervention.

In a Western country, that is only possible if the people demand it.

There appears to still be a small window of opportunity to avoid irreversible global warming, but major and immediate action is required.

As far as building dikes against rising sea levels is concerned, that’s just not realistic.

In the scenario of irreversible global warming, the entire Greenland ice sheet will melt, and sea level will rise seven metres, although the time scale for this is 100 years. You can’t build dikes for that.

Maybe a country like Canada, wealthy, with a very large inland area in relation to the population, and having a cold climate at present, can deal with this sea level rise, but we do not exist in isolation.

The other part of sea level rise that is discussed more rarely is that the Antarctica ice sheet will also melt, although it will take longer, and that means a sea level rise of 70 metres.

Finally, pointing the finger at China is neither useful nor reasonable.

Keep in mind that their population is well over a billion, so their per capita greenhouse gas emissions are much lower than ours.

Furthermore, their total emissions have only just become the largest in the world. Clearly, China is becoming the biggest problem, but it certainly has not caused the existing problem. China has the same moral right to develop its economy that any country has.

People who have difficulty understanding this point will perhaps recognize that, if push comes to shove, and it’s everyone for themselves, then China will simply take whatever it wants.

Despite being a fairly small country in population terms, Canada has had some opportunities to take a leadership position on fighting

global warming. So far, we have wasted every opportunity, and have rather tended towards being the worst per capita polluter.

What sort of a legacy will Canada leave for the future?

City needs to stay out of federal business

Re: City to ask feds to force NHL back to work (NewsLeader, Dec. 14)

I miss NHL hockey as much as anyone else and would dearly like the dispute between the owners and players to be settled.

However for Burnaby City Council to write to the Federal Labour Minister requesting that the federal government bring in back-to-work legislation is just plain silly.

First of all the federal government has no jurisdiction, since only seven of the 30 teams are located in Canada.

Second, it wouldn’t be appropriate in any event since I don’t think even Councillor Nick Volkow would be willing to argue that a national emergency is involved.

City council should stick to looking after local land use and infrastructure matters and stop trying to interfere in areas outside their jurisdiction.

Garth EvansBurnaby

The last time I checked the NHL Players Association was a union.

Mayor Derek Corrigan has always supported the unions. Sounds kind of hypocritical to me that he’s not supporting the players (union), especially when he would never consider it if it were the teachers or nurses union.

Looks like another way to buy votes.

Province should have known, prevented risk: NDP criticJeff Nagel and Sarah PayneBlack Press

“Absolutely unacceptable.”B.C. Transportation Minister

Mary Polak used that phrase repeatedly Thursday afternoon at a press conference to address the closure one day earlier of the brand new Port Mann Bridge when falling chunks of snow and ice damaged vehicles crossing the span.

“Yesterday’s events on the Port Mann Bridge were absolutely unacceptable,” she told reporters. “Like everyone else, I was feeling horrified at the images people were sending in. It was absolutely shocking.

“I can’t imagine what it must have felt like for those motorists going across the bridge and seeing huge pieces of ice coming down around them. It’s absolutely unacceptable.”

Polak and Mike Proudfoot, CEO of the Transportation Investment Corp. (TI Corp.) said it’s up to the contractor, Kiewit-Flatiron, to come up with a solution — at no cost to taxpayers.

“This design for the bridge contemplates measures for the

accumulation of snow and ice,” Proudfoot said. “Those haven’t been effective so the ball’s back in the contractor’s court to come up with a proper solution.”

Said Polak: “We will be looking to the contractor to provide us not only with a long-term, permanent solution that ensures this never, ever occurs again but, also, an immediate fix to the problem so that the bridge is open and indeed safe for the travelling public.”

Still, they made no guarantees that weather conditions will not force another closure of the

bridge.Proudfoot said centre pylons

are designed to eliminate structural points where snow can accumulate and the cables – which are not heated – are covered in plastic, and snow should have slid down the cables and dissipated.

He also said the Port Mann “was designed by one of the most prominent experts in cable-stayed bridges. It goes through an independent check by a separate firm, which is also an internationally recognized expert in cable-stayed bridges.

VICTORIA – Releasing a snakehead fish into B.C. waters could cost you up to $250,000.

The B.C. government has amended its controlled alien species regulation to impose steep fines for releasing invasive fish such as the snakehead, a Chinese import with a voracious appetite and the ability to wiggle across land to get to new waterways.

A snakehead fish discovered in a pond in Burnaby’s Central Park in June forced environment ministry biologists to pump the lake level down so it could be captured. The toothy beasts were being imported and sold alive in Asian specialty food stores.

The new regulations also aim to stop the spread of zebra or quagga mussels that can attach themselves to boats and equipment and infest lakes. Failure to remove those mussels, alive or dead, can trigger a fine of up to $100,000.

“The impact of the snakehead and zebra mussel in other jurisdictions has been

devastating to those local ecosystems,” Environment Minister Terry Lake said Thursday, announcing the latest changes.

The regulations also prohibit possession and breeding of identified high-risk aquatic species. They expand the reach of legislation passed in 2009 that restricted ownership and breeding of tigers, snakes, crocodiles and a long list of other exotic animals. Added to the list are species of monitor lizard that grow to more than two metres long or otherwise represent a threat to public safety.

B.C.’s restrictions for private zoos were passed after a woman was killed by a Bengal tiger kept in a cage at an exotic animal attraction on a farm near 100 Mile House in 2007.

The new regulations add definitions for “accredited zoo or aquarium” as well as schools and research facilities that are permitted to possess exotic animals for study purposes. The regulation requires owners of controlled species to

apply for permits. Conservation officers have authority to seize animals that are considered an immediate threat to health and safety of people.

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADERBurnaby Winter Club A2 Bruins forward beats North Shore Winter Club goalie Logan Terness with a shot over the shoulder in an atom game at the Burnaby Winter Club.

BRuIN’S gOT hIM BEATNorthwest Showcase a Christmas tradition

The Burnaby Minor Hockey Association bantam tournament is as established a Christmas break tradition as any other in the city.

This year’s version will be the 50th annual running from Dec. 27 to 31 at the Bill Copeland, Burnaby Lake and Kengsington arenas. It will, however, have a little twist to it. Last week organizers discovered two teams from Arizona were coming instead of one. That meant some last-minute juggling had to be done to make it a 17-team field instead of the usual 16.

The sun belt teams will be joined by one from the extreme weather snow belt of the United States, the Alaska Junior Aces.

The Arizona Firebirds were placed in the Marino Division with the Cowichan Valley Capitals, the Ridge Meadow Rustlers and the Seafair Islanders from Richmond while the Aces will be in the Smith Division with the Burnaby Bulldogs, Nanaimo Clippers and Surrey Thunder.

Those two divisions make up the Colbourne Conference while the Collingwood Conference will feature the Boyd Division consisting of the Coquitlam Chiefs, Prince George Cougars, Richmond Blues and South Delta Storm, and

the Wong Division with the Kamloops Blazers, Langley Eagles, Okanagan Hockey Academy and Vancouver Thunderbirds.

Turris ticked with tone of freelance articleFormer Burnaby

Express Kyle Turris was furiously backpedaling in a defensive position last week but he wasn’t wearing skates at the time.

Turris was upset with the negative tone of an article about him written by a fellow New Westminster native published in the Dec. 17 Globe and Mail.

Freelance journalist Jordan Winnett interviewed Turris by phone about his experiences playing for Oulu Karpat, a Finnish elite league team. Winnett played guard on the New Westminster Hyacks basketball team and his younger brother Ben, a fourth round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, played hockey against Turris.

Winnett had planned to go to Finland to interview Turris and travel with him. Turris had been waiting out

the NHL lockout practising with his Ottawa Senators teammates before getting the call from Finland. Earlier this year he signed a five-year, $15-million deal with the Senators after being traded to Ottawa by Phoenix following a holdout with the Coyotes.

In the Globe article, Turris was quoted as saying he was bored because there’s “nothing to do” and complaining about only four hours of sunlight, minus-20 C temperatures, travel worse than what he experienced playing for the Burnaby Express in the B.C. Junior Hockey League, and having to eat pre-game meals on the road at truck stops.

Turris has returned to Canada, and issued a statement Wednesday saying the article “made me extremely upset that it was so negative, and that it had very

inaccurate and untrue information.”

“I really enjoyed my time in Oulu,” the statement continued, “and those who are around me know that. I want to make clear that the sole reason I left is because of personal reasons that required me to be home with my family. The entire Oulu organization treated me very well, and I feel terrible that

people may now feel that I was not grateful to be part of the organization. I know that I was very lucky

to play for such an awesome organization that welcomed me with open arms and treated us very well.

Everyone I met in Finland, the coaches, management, fans and people of Oulu were all very nice and made my time there a memorable one.

“I was also lucky to have great teammates, with whom I have made good friendships. For all this I am very thankful and wish the Karpat organization great success in the future.”

In media reports Wednesday, Turris questioned the accuracy of the quotes, but although Winnett didn’t record the interview he stood by what he had written.

After graduating

from NWSS, Winnett headed to Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Que., to play basketball for the Gaiters and work on the school newspaper. After two years as a sportswriter for the Sherbrooke Record, he headed to Wales for a masters degree in media, communications and political science from Swansea University. He has since settled in Brighton, England and is temporarily working for the Reading Rockets professional basketball club as well as doing freelance journalism.

Kyle Turris was upset about an article written be a freelance journalist.

And the TI Corp. has engineers who review it prior to the commencement of work.”

Polak was also asked about reports that workers raised concerns previously about potential problems with snow and ice, and whether an option for heated cables was presented to the province or TI Corp. “Nothing of that nature was ever brought to the attention of the ministry and I don’t believe it was brought to the attention of TI Corp.,” she said.

Kiewit-Flatiron spokesman Tom Jansenn said in an emailed statement the firm is “very concerned” and working to find a solution as fast as possible.

He would not say if the contractor accepts cost responsibility.

Earlier in the day, the main union representing workers on the Port Mann Bridge wouldn’t confirm whether its members had raised falling ice as a safety concern last winter.

Asked if the issue was recorded as a concern at health and safety meetings, Ironworkers Local 97 president Cecil Damery would only say: “Snow was an issue last year also.”

Damery said he had to be “careful what I say” because the union works closely with

Kiewit-Flatiron.The Christian Labour

Association of Canada (CLAC), another union whose members worked mainly on the highway side of the $3.3-billion Port Mann Highway 1 Project and less frequently on the bridge, said its reps did not hear of falling ice concerns.

NDP transportation critic Harry Bains said even without worker complaints, the government should have known that snow and ice falls onto traffic at other bridges of similar design, where cables from the outer bridge rails cross over top of traffic to central support towers.

Bridges with falling ice problems exist in Sweden, the U.K. and Boston.

“If they knew, why did they not consider eliminating that risk?” Bains asked.

Bains said either a retrofit to ensure de-icing — or whatever other technology is suitable — must be performed even if it costs much more now than it would have during construction.

It’s not acceptable to shut down the bridge for lengthy periods when similar snow and ice conditions develop, he

said, nor is it acceptable if motorists are left scared to drive over the Port Mann in winter.

“There’s no other choice but to fix the problem,” Bains said. “Why didn’t they do this before? They ought to have known.”

If the ministry did know about the issue but chose not to build in a better solution, Bains wants to know if it was to cut costs.

“Was this because of money or because they simply never thought about it and never did proper due diligence?”

ICBC has received more than 100 claims of vehicles damaged on the Port Mann Bridge Wednesday. Two vehicle occupants were injured and one was hospitalized.

Motorists described the falling ice chunks as large — a few feet long — and cracking and in some cases punching through windows.

TI Corp. has said drivers who travelled across the bridge between 10 and 6 p.m. Wednesday won’t be charged tolls and the company will cover

insurance deductibles for vehicles damaged by falling snow and ice on the bridge, as well as work to compensate motorists on a case-by-case basis who had no comprehensive insurance.
