State o the Art Burner Systems

The combustion system is a key element inecient thermal processing o ores, minerals, and

similar bulk solids in a rotary kiln. The processrequirements are stringent in a variety o thermal

processing systems such as in coke calcining, limestone calcining, recovery o lime in pulp mills,

and the combustion o wastes to name a ew.

The burner system is an important and an integral component o

a rotary kiln system to optimize the combustion o uels to releaseheat in the kiln.

Saety considerations, ease and exibility o operation, product

quality, energy eciency, maintenance costs, and the environ-

mental impact o the products o combustion are some o the

most critical areas that a kiln operator must evaluate in selecting a

kiln burner.

Metso, with over hal a century o experience in designing and

manuacturing rotary kiln-based thermal processing systems, has

the technical expertise and capability to provide rotary kiln opera-

tors with a kiln burner system that best meets their requirements.

Since 1950 Metso has successully engineered and supplied more

than 300 burner systems

Kiln Burners

– engineered or specic job requirementsAll burner systems are designed based on Metso’s vast burner

experience. When designing a burner system, Metso’s engineers

consider: the process, primary and secondary air momentum,

system temperature prole requirements, and emissions require-

ments. Reduced NOx emissions and optimum ame shape is

achieved with the use o two primary air chambers.

Multi-uel capability designed to handle gas, oil, pulverized•

coal, petroleum coke, or non-condensible gases separately or

in combination are available.

Flame is directional adjustable, and ame shape control is•

obtained by dual air channels.

Metso can design a ring system or your application.

Engineered and custom designed valve trainsor sae, ecient, reliable combustion areprovided

Valve drains are pre-piped and pre-tested and shipped as anassembled module ready or connection to customer’s piping andwiring.

Engineered pump and heater sets or heavy oil service or or light

oil duty, in simplex or duplex models are available.

Burner system management

Flame saeguard, and burner management systems are•

designed specically or applications to rotary kilns ring gas,

oil or solid uels.

Programmable Logic Controlled (PLC) systems perorm all•

required limit checking and operator input checking during

burner light-of.

Alpha-numerical message display on local ame saeguard•

panel guides operators through burner start-up procedure.

Remote start/stop capabilities can be provided to the plant•

Distributed Control System (DCS).

Typical burner management system

Low primary air design is used to maximize uel eciency and•

energy recovery rom auxiliary cooling devices.

Design eatures include mechanical or steam atomization o oil•

and sturdy, rugged construction or high temperature duty.

Burner systems range from preheat to 300 MBtu/hr. (315 GJ/hr.).•

Systems provide increased diagnostics and ease o operation,•

exibility and space savings.

Systems conorm to FM, CSA, Ontario Hydro, NFPA, and IRI.•

Burner combustion system

The Metso combustion system is designed with the

exibility to suit the ollowing specifc kiln fring

applications:

Wide selection o components including burner,•

primary air an, uel valve trains, pumps and

heater sets, fame management system with panel.

Single or multiple uels.•

Steam or mechanical uel oil atomization.•

Maximum fame shape and locationcontrol or optimum kiln perormance

Based on the extensive feld experience o Metso

engineers, the critical actors o ame shape and

location to complement kiln internals is applied to

burner design.

Burner design eatures include single or dual primary

air path, dual (axial and radial) natural gas paths, easily changeable uel oil nozzle, adjustable uel

nozzle to primary air nozzle relationship, and easily

adjustable burner mount and primary air ow.

The Metso Non-Condensible Gas (NCG)

The NCG incineration gun is a separately mounted and

separately aimable assembly to conorm with our experi-

ence that NCG introduction via the main kiln burner is

detrimental to main ame development and space

controls, as well as to overall process control. Separate NCGintroduction and placement o the NCG stream in relation

to the main ame enables proper main ame develop-

ment and achievement o peak temperature, resulting in

stable kiln operation and maximum incineration o the

NCG’s thus minimizing TRS emissions.

NCG incineration gun eatures include separate gas paths

or each NCG stream to be incinerated, outer cooling air

path, 316 stainless steel construction or parts in contact

with NCG’s, 304 stainless steel outer cooling air blast pipe

with 3” thick insulating castable lining, anged connec-

tions or NCG and cooling air paths, mounting ange withadjusting mounting screws, and a cooling air an.
