Welcome to our 31st Annual Bull and Female Sale. Being in the livestock business during this past year has certainly been exciting and rewarding. At least it makes us old cowboys sit up and take notice of what is going on. It would appear that we are in for some strong markets for years to come. Our cattle breeding and management program has remained steady and strong over the past years. We have been able to introduce and concentrate on traits we feel valuable to our operation by using bulls proven for inherited characteristics we desire through the use of A.I. breeding. We have been able to stack pedigrees for calving ease, short gestation, as well as growth, thickness and depth by using curve bender bulls with those desirable traits. Over the past years we have maintained the course striving to produce breeding stock that works for us in range conditions conducive to southwestern Saskatchewan. Our cow herd has to travel, rummage for feed and work for us year ‘round. Our cattle walk approximately a mile every day in the winter months regardless of the weather here on the prairies. This is a great way to condition pregnant females into the calving season, maintaining muscle tone and hardiness. The bulls in this Sale have been bred and fed for you the customers. This is an invitation to take advantage of our years of learning, breeding and concentrating on what is important to us in our livestock program.

Chinook is an outstanding calving ease sire. His third calf crop is here in 2015 and we continue to see his consistent 65 -70 lb calves hit the ground with added vigor and energy. Chinook has 11 sons on offer, they are a very consistent, easy fleshing, thick, masculine group of bulls. All bulls but one are strongly recommended for heifers. LEPTIN GENE TESTINGLeptin is a hormone that regulates feed intake and energy expenditures. There are three Leptin variants:-CC (lean) animals have less fat-CT animals are economically intermediate-TT (fat) animals have more fat The T gene influences several economically important traits, including: weaning weight, marbling, quality grade, yield grade, days on feed and milk production. By using a TT bull, you can guarantee that his calf crop will all be at least CT carriers.Another tool in the “tool box” for our customers that are shipping calves direct to feedlot, or finishing calves on their own pocket book.

Glanworth genetics came over from New Zealand. We were interested in these genetics because of their moderate frame and extremely easy keeping traits. Glanworth sires very predictable calves, that are very deep bodied and big hipped. Many sons are recommended for heifers. 7x’s 2013 calf crop, birthweight averages – bulls 79lbs. – heifers 73lbs.

CALVING EASE RATINGWe have strived to select AI bulls and develop a breeding program, which is in harmony with calving ease

as well as performance. Although many associate calving ease with birth weight (as do we to a degree), there are other factors that come into play. I have often thought that birth weights should be like buying t-shirts: small, medium, large and x-large (don’t want to go there). Consideration should also be placed on genetic make up (bloodlines), environmental and management practices. I have become aware that gestation length is a contributing factor. By using bulls that pass on shorter gestation periods to their

calves, they can attribute to calving ease. We have concentrated on bulls with gestation lengths of 270 to 280 days. The average gestation length (benchmark) for the Angus breed is 283 days. From our first calf

heifers over the years, we have had calves born from 268 to 291 days. The 268 gestation calves weigh ~70 lbs, lively, up and going. The calves from the 291 day gestation weigh ~95-98 lbs., lay around for a day. He’ll make a good steer – because we won’t pass those genetics on. You will find bulls in our offering

with pedigrees stacked for lower birth weight and shorter gestation and therefore should be compatible for breeding heifers. By calving ease stacked pedigrees we refer to low birth weight and short gestation length

on the sire side as well as the sire of the mother. For your convenience we have rated each bull based on information we have of birth weight, pedigree, gestation period and other influences.

The cream can perched in the porch laden with farming dust,A reminder of early farming days through the boom and bust.

A metal can with pressed in lid, a container of choice nourishment,Enriched with thick smooth cream, a legacy seemingly heaven sent.

It was set in the milking parlour beneath the cream separator.Fresh cream caressed its lustrous sides, the bounty of farm labour.

It was placed into a pickup truck, then given a ride to town,The contents exchanged for needed cash, then its insides washed down.

Rich cream helped sustain the family farm in those harsh pioneer days.Then the tin can served to multi task in many diverse ways.

The cream can was filled with cool water from an earthen well,Then carted to the school house, into a water cooler the contents fell.

At the country dance it served as a stool for the fiddler of the band,Or was beat upon its bottom by the sticks of a drummers hand.

It carried water when lunch was served to the threshing crew.Hired men sat on its lid as they wolfed down homemade stew.

It hauled rinse water for a deer hunt and frogs for fishing bait.And when its rusty remains were salvaged a flower pot became its fate.

The cream can supported the family farm, the caretaker of golden lust.Now it is abandoned in the porch laden with farming dust.
