EXTERNAL SCHOOL REVIEW – BURRA COMMUNITY SCHOOL
For those of you who were not aware, our school undertook an external school review this week. The Review Officers were here for 2 full days interviewing parents, Governing Council members, all teaching staff, all classroom SSOs and students. The purpose of an External School Review is to support schools to raise student achievement and sustain high performance. It is a transparent process which contributes to the school’s strategic directions to build high performance. The Department uses a very detailed framework which draws heavily on evidence-based research, and focusses on the use of practices proven to impact significantly on the achievement of outcomes for all students at the classroom and school level. Whilst the framework does not include everything a school does, it is intended to strengthen a school’s focus on learning. It provides a ‘fresh set of eyes’ to verify or challenge internal self review findings, the rigour of improvement practices or the capacity to achieve or sustain improvement over time.

TERM DATES 2017
Term 1 30/1/17 - 13/4/17 Term 2 1/5/17 - 7/7/17 Term 3 24/7/17 - 29/9/17 Term 4 16/10/17 - 15/12/17 14/12/17
It was with great pleasure on Tuesday evening when the External Review Team met with me to provide an initial summary of their findings. Here are some statements I picked out to proudly share with you all:
- Our school possesses many strengths and achievements, and our families trust and respect our staff and our good intentions.
- The Review Team detected a very strong, cohesive culture, where people support each other and the R-12ness of the school was the best they had ever encountered.
- Parents value our staff and each other very highly, and have a lot of confidence in our school.
- They appreciate our authenticity, our approachable nature and leadership’s transparency.
- There is a lot of deep, collective knowledge of our students amongst our staff.
- We have been very successful in reframing the school, with regards to the Mission and Vision statement
- All our students are being attended to with regards to intervention.
I would like to thank everyone for their active participation in our recent External School Review. It was a fascinating process and very affirming that we are certainly on the right track to raising student achievement at Burra Community School. The full report will be forthcoming and shared with Governing Council, and then published on our school website. Staff News Congratulations to Matt Stewart, who will be coordinating the familiarisation and implementation of our new Education Management System software; Sentral next term. This is a short-term leadership position within our school, and coupled with his existing role(s) Matt will be working with staff to support them in embracing this new technology. Next term I will be on Long Service Leave for the first 5 weeks, and Kim Scott our Deputy Principal will be Acting Principal during this time. Together with the rest of the Leadership Team, we have endeavoured to ‘share various roles’ and the teaching disruptions to a minimum. With Kim’s SACE Senior Maths there will be no changes. However, we will attempt to rearrange the rest of the leadership members teaching from time to time to accommodate for daily operations, student management, and supervision. Thanks for your understanding. Have a great break; see you all on my return,
Susan
INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS
Burra Community School had 38 students competing at the Lower North Zone Athletics at Riverton against students from Clare High, Riverton District High, Kapunda High and Balaklava High Schools. The contingent that represented Burra Community School did themselves and the school proud. We came runner up in the Handicap Shield. This shield takes into account the students enrolled at the school and the points they score on the day. Chase Webster won the U15 Boys age group and Kalai Waters was runner up for the U16 boys. Thank you to Mr Norman and Mrs Blight for their help in making the day run smoothly and to the parents who came and supported the team. From this carnival 11 students have been selected to represent the Lower North Team at SANTOS Stadium on Tuesday of Week 11. Well done to all students again on their efforts and exertions. To strive to achieve your best is the most you can ask of yourself.

HUB CARNIVAL TENNIS On Wednesday 22nd March 2017, 6 Burra students from Year 6 and 7 went to Clare to compete in the SAPSASA Tennis Hub Carnival. The students who participated were:
Jarad Clonan, Josh Booth, Bradtke Stockman, Emily Lines, Lauren Donhardt, Georgie Lines.
There were also other students from Riverton, Saddleworth and Manoora Primary Schools. We came third overall out of four teams, Clare 1 came first, Clare 2 came second, Burra (who is awesome) came third and Balaklava came fourth. We played at the Clare courts and to begin with it was a bit chilly, but it warmed up towards lunchtime. Against Clare 2 we won 8 sets and 61 games and they won 10 sets and 81 games. Then we played Clare 1 and we got 6 sets and 56 games and they got 12 sets and 83 games. After that we played Balaklava and we won 12 sets and 90 games and they won 6 sets and 64 games. Overall, Jarad won 11 games, Bradtke won 17, Josh won 11, Emily won 27, Lauren won 10 and Georgie won 17. Miss Bruhn was the Burra Hub coach. Overall we had lots of fun and it was a great day. Emily Lines was invited to trial for the SAPSASA district team to go down to Adelaide in Term 4.

HUB CRICKET On Wednesday the 22nd of March, five Year 6/7 students from Burra Community School represented the Burra Hub cricket team. The day consisted of four teams from the Clare, Balaklava and Burra hubs. Both of our games were played at the picturesque Watervale Oval with our hub winning one game and losing one. In game one Clare batted first with captains Ashton Pearce and Will Wadlow leading our side onto the field. Clare batted well making 83 from their allotted overs. Ashton Pearce and Jack Austin both claimed a wicket each for the Burra hub, while Will Wadlow bowled extremely well with the new ball without luck. In reply Thomas Friebel got the team off to a great
start hitting a huge six in the third over of the day. Ashton Pearce and Jack Austin remained not out with Burra hub finishing just short of the required target. In game two we faced off against the Balaklava hub in a match which turned out to be a cliff hanger. Batting first Burra hub made 81 with Ashton Pearce again remaining not out with a well compiled six runs and Thomas Friebel complimented his big six from the game before with two well hit boundaries. After a couple of quick wickets Jack Austin and Scarlett Pearce dug in and made five and three not out respectively to help our score along to the final total. Balaklava batted well with wickets hard to come by until Thomas Friebel got the ball in his hands, claiming two wickets and conceding zero runs from his two overs. With Balaklava requiring seven runs from the last over Scarlett Pearce bowled an excellent over which won the game for Burra. Balaklava falling three runs short.
Thank you to Nick Pearce and Kate Wadlow for their help and support throughout the day. All Burra Community School students represented our school with pride, displaying excellent sportsmanship and behaviour during both games.

SOFTBALL An exciting day of softball was held at Clare Primary School in the SAPSASA Mid-North Softball Summer Carnival. The 4 teams consisted of the Burra, Clare and Burra Hubs plus an extra team from Clare PS of mainly boys to make up the draw.
Congratulations to Kate Clarke, Issy Bray, Tilly Nicholls, Isobel Drew, Cher Waters and Kloe Kononiuk on their performance and attitude. They worked together, listened and encouraged each other. Their skills and understanding of the game improved dramatically. There was a marked change from their first game to the last! All teams played each other, and the undefeated Burra Hub team played the second Balaklava Team in the final. The Burra girls hit really well and kept Balaklava to two scoreless innings, taking the game to an 11 to 7 win. Overall we saw a day of camaraderie, participation and genuine skill learning.
FIELD DAY VISIT Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 students visited the Field Days at the Town Oval. The children enjoyed the experience.
