OUR PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As the end of the school year approaches staff changes often occur.

Retirements Mrs Gwenda Chapman, a permanent member of staff since the year 2000, has confirmed that she will be officially retiring this term after finishing her extended leave. Mrs Chapman was a well-respected and hardworking staff member who taught at Burraneer Bay for over 16 years. She will be missed by us all and we wish her a happy and healthy retirement. Mrs Chapman always told her class that a sprinkle of fairy dust would always make everything ok.

Student Memories of Mrs Chapman:

“Mrs Chapman was always so funny!” Brooklyn 3F

“Mrs Chapman accidently used permanent marker on the whiteboard” - Kadee 2/3S

“She was nice and kind” Sasha 3F

“She asked me to change my name to Charlotte because she kept getting me mixed up with my sister” - Brigette 3T

“Mrs Chapman always made us laugh” - Charly 3T

“When I gave her a note she would always deliberately drop it. It was really funny.”- Ella 5A

“When Mrs Chapman was on duty she always spoke about how she met Cinderella and Snow White at a ball”- Eva 5A

“Mrs Chapman always screamed when she heard the word “rat”. - Miah 6R

“Mrs Chapman used to say that she was a princess.” -Tyler 5T

“Mrs Chapman loved a chat.- Kean 5T

“Mrs Chapman went around making “Nee-Naw” noises like the police to remind everyone to put on their hats.” -Kaylen 4/5N

“Mrs Chapman always looked out for me.” -Abbey 4/5N

Mrs. Janet Adamson

It is with great sadness we say farewell to our longest serving staff member at Burraneer Bay PS. Mrs Adamson has been a member of our SASS staff [office] for over 26 years. While she has been here she has seen three principals [Mr Peter Hennessey, Mr Adrian Mort & Mr Greg Fitzgerald] come and go. In addition to those principals she has witnessed many changes to staff during those years. Mrs Adamson worked primarily in our school library in her time at the school and saw the removal of our old demountable library and the upgrade of a building to house our current library. Jan has clear memories of entering the very first book on to a new computerised library system as school libraries moved from old card systems to electronic services --- stamping to scanning!

Since that very first resource was entered we have added some 35000 resources to the library computer system. In addition to many other duties Mrs Adamson has put in countless hours covering thousands of books that your children, and the staff, continue to use. Mrs Adamson also worked at Caringbah High School and Caringbah PS during her years of service. The staff and children of Burraneer Bay PS wish Mrs Adamson the very best for a long, happy & healthy retirement.

Supportive Community

Thank you to the many families that expressed their gratitude for the “Music through the Decades” concert. I know it was a wonderful evening and we look forward to our upcoming Musical Extravaganza “Step Back in Time” concert on Thursday 30 November. Please save the date. All students from every grade will be performing.

Sunflowers at the Bay!

Have you ever seen sunflowers like these? They definitely love the sun that streams into our

garden beds. I am amazed how much they tower over our KB gardeners

Warmest Regards,

Ms.V.Pantelis.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Writing has been a focus in Year 6 this year. The year 6 students all participated in a wonderful

writing program run by NIDA called the Story Trader. It stimulated their imaginations and their writing responses were first class. Pictures and photographs have also been used as a stimulus for their writing. I have truly enjoyed observing these lessons and watching all the children flourish regardless of ability.

Jeepers Creepers - it’s a Zeeper Jeepers Creepers -it’s a Zeeper. The scandalous company “Zeepers” has released a model of transportation that they claim is “the fastest vehicle you can buy ”. Whether their claims are true or not, this company is substantially unethical. Its misuse of animals is appalling. It is corrupting animal instincts and chances of survival by forcing them to help. Their lack of total disregard for the environment proves that even supporting or purchasing their products is barbaric.

Zeepers say that they are eco-friendly ! The truth is that they are economically friendly but that just means - they aren’t going broke. Animals are used by them to conduct experiments on their machines to ensure all their products are in working order. Clearly - if they need to test their own products then the company itself isn’t one hundred percent confident in their own product. Undercover research proved that on average only twenty percent of their products would pass the any test. The animals whose prototypes don’t pass qualifications are at risk of being severely injured or worse. If you have a heart and care for the animals - you won’t buy from Zeepers.

The materials used are unethical. The skin from animals is used to keep the “Zeepers” in the air. The hides are chemically treated and used as the balloon like structure. When someone questioned Edison Zeeper, the CEO about this, he could not provide any evidence against the allegations and accusations thrown at him. He claimed that “the material made from the treated skins is the most suitable and works better”! Does exploitation of animals work for you? Harvesting animal skin and sending it to the testing facility places all animals at serious risk! Furthermore, the faulty engineering of the machines, even after the unethical testing, is causing them to crash and start fires and put people at risk. The fires then spread rapidly and out of control. It can take hours, sometimes days to put out because of the flammable resources that they use such as petroleum. It is more than just the malfunctioning of machines but the unsustainable source of energy, coal. Zeepers isn’t eco-friendly or ethical. In fact it is the exact opposite of what it claims to be. Zeepers is nothing more than a misleading representation of a deceptive hoax where people are corrupt. Jeepers Creepers! Lewis P 6R

YEAR 4 WATERSLEA CAMP 90 very excited Year 4 students returned from their overnight excursion to the Waterslea Camp yesterday afternoon with lots of stories. They enjoyed participating in the wide range of fun filled activities and enjoyed all the challenges that the camp had to offer. They loved their free time too when they got to spend in their cabins with their friends at camp. The Year 4 students didn’t hesitate to let me know that they had the “best time ever”.

Thank you to all the Year 4 parents for supporting this wonderful initiative. We know that it is often very difficult sending your child off on an overnight excursion .

Thank you to all the staff who attended and gave up their personal time to ensure the children had such a positive experience.

Congratulations to Ally N in 6M. Ally is the winner of the 2017 Year Book Cover Competition. Ally’s artwork was outstanding and clearly showed that at Burraneer Bay there certainly is something for

Dogs in Schools A reminder to all members of our school community that dogs are not allowed on our school grounds. This rule has been made to ensure the safety of all students. Our office staff have had to remind a few people about this rule this week and the feedback they received was not encouraging. The following is a useful link with helpful information on promoting safety for children and dogs

http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/dogs_and_children.html Something of interest – Dogs on School Grounds:

Under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998 No 87 owners of dogs must: · Be 18 years of age or over · Leash their dog when in a public place · Ensure their dog wears a collar and identification tag when in a public place · Ensure their dog does not enter a food consumption area or wild life protection area · Ensure their dog does not enter a school or child care playground and any other place declared prohibited to dogs by Council

The NSW Consolidated Act pertaining to Dogs, states that dogs are prohibited in some public places. Section (e) of the Act specifically refers to schools and states that this applies to dogs whether they are leashed or unleashed. The exceptions are assistance dogs that are specifically trained to assist those who are sight or hearing impaired.
