NEWSLETTER
ASSOCIATION NEWSOur meeting on 17 June was attended by 39 members
and 4 visitors, including Cr Gerard O’Connell from
Fraser Coast Regional Council. Apologies were
received from 7 members.
New Association Secretary, Christine Rogers, was
welcomed into her role, and took the minutes of the
meeting.
We are still waiting for someone to step forward and
take on the role of President. It’s essential to the
Association that this position be filled as soon as
possible. Please consider if you can assist here.
The Burrum Heads Blue Water Boat Club is holding
a charity/fun bowls day at Burrum Heads Bowls Club
on Sunday 12 July to raise funds towards the shelter
shed at the new tennis courts. Many thanks to both
the Boat Club and the Bowls Club for organising this
event. I urge everyone to come along, enjoy the fun,
and support the cause. It’s very pleasing to see this
sort of co-operation within our community. You can
find more information later in this newsletter.
Tennis Courts: The opening of the new courts on 31
May was a very successful day – many thanks to all
helpers – organisers, cooks, and Darren from the
Veggie Patch who donated the onions. We now await
the connection of power to enable the courts to be
used at night. Late June/early July is the prediction.
Shelter shed should be on site within about three
weeks.
Newsletters: We have received very favourable
comments regarding the delivery of newsletters to
Sirenia Beach, Raintree and Burrum Park. Thank you
to all helpers, especially our junior citizens. Two
volunteers have now been trained to assist with the
printing of the newsletter. We are hopeful that
another four will be trained this month.
The Association is also investigating the possibility
of making the newsletters available ‘on line’, and
establishing a web-page.
Illegal Campers: Barry Alexander will meet with
Andrew Gaze (FCRC) next week to discuss this
matter.
Lighting at intersections: Response from MRD was
not encouraging – apparently we haven’t had enough
accidents!! A traffic counter is currently in place at
Orchid Drive.
Boat Ramp: Zorro advised that he met with FCRC
last week and hopes for some news within a week or
so.
Burrum Heads ‘Needs’: Barry Alexander and Ron
Gregson have spent considerable time preparing a
draft letter to FCRC listing a number of issues that
members feel are our ‘needs’ rather than our ‘wants.’
When the letter is fine-tuned it will be delivered to
Council with the request that Association
representatives engage in a series of meetings with
relevant Council departmental heads. Cr O’Connell
supported the Associations action, believing that it
will ‘set the scene’ for on-going collaboration. He
commented on the strong community spirit evidenced
by the attendance at our meeting.
Hall Cleaning: Only two tender applications were
received. If we accept either we will need to increase
hall rental substantially in order to cover our costs.
We will investigate the possibility of having a group
of volunteers who will clean, in teams of 3 or 4, for
one hour each fortnight. If you are concerned about
keeping our hall available to all local groups, and you
can spare an hour once a fortnight, please contact
Lesley (4129 5410). Let’s support our community in
the old fashioned way!
Next Meeting of the Association will be held on
Wednesday 15 July 2009commencing at 7.00pm sharp
at the Community Hall.

TENNIS COURTS
In conjunction with the Burrum Heads Social Club’s “Family Fun and Sports Day,” Sunday 31 May saw
the opening of our new tennis courts. The courts were available, free of charge, to anyone keen to have a
hit. It was a very successful day, with many turning up to enjoy the occasion.
Tristan Brown, of Fraser Coast Pro Tennis (Hervey Bay), assisted greatly in launching our courts. He
brought along a couple of additional coaches and a few of the very talented juniors who are part of his
training squad. Tristan and his helpers conducted a free coaching clinic for our local children, and I am
sure that everyone was impressed at how quickly he was able to have these totally inexperienced
youngsters hitting balls, and thoroughly enjoying themselves.
We were also entertained by a demonstration match between a couple of the young squad members -
most impressive!
Many thanks to Tristan, and all of his group, for their contribution to the success of our day. We now
look forward to producing our own home-grown champions in the future!
The construction of these courts has been made possible by a grant from the Queensland Department of
Sport and Recreation (covering 67% of the total cost of the project), a donation of $15,000 from the
Fraser Coast Regional Council, and the balance of the cost being carried by the Burrum Heads
Progress Association - a result of various donations and fund-raising activities over a number of years.
Thank you, all,for your contribution towards providing this facility for our town.

Monday Craft Group has expanded to between 73 –
79 ladies each Monday in June. We have had
several new ladies, with our visitors from the south
making up the extras. We welcome them all and
hope they enjoy Monday mornings.
Crafts - June crafts have been well received with
many ladies doing the card-making lessons, some
for the first time.
- July: Heather will be teaching a Free
Form Knitting and Crochet bag.
Knitting needles have been clicking as the ladies
have been knitting jackets and beanies for the AIDS
babies. So far 400 have been made and sent to New
Guinea.
On 20 July we will be celebrating our birthday. It is
sixteen years since the group commenced. The
theme this year will be ‘something of the 50’s.’
There will be the usual craft display with each lady
bringing two projects to show and tell.
The Craft Group meets Monday mornings - 9.00 –
11.30am. $3.00 covers morning tea and hall hire.
All welcome.

BIGGEST AFTERNOON TEA for QUEENSLANDCANCER FOUNDATION
As most would be aware, our June meeting took the
form of The Biggest Afternoon Tea for Queensland
Cancer Foundation. We are thrilled to advise that the
afternoon was a huge success with the final sum of
$3225.55 being raised. Our guest speaker was Dallas
Sheng from Qld Cancer Foundation who gave freely
of his time and was available to answer any questions
re the foundation and its work.
We would like to acknowledge the generosity of our
local businesses and groups-
BURRUM TRADERS, DENISE’S SNIP AND KLIPZ,BURRUM HEADS PHARMACY, BURRUM HEADSVEGGIE PATCH, BURRUM HAIR LOUNGE,BURRUM HEADS BAKERY, AVONREPRESENTATIVES SHARON AND DANIEL,DEBORAH FROM MARY K, BURRUM HEADSPROGRESS ASSOSSIATION AND THE MONDAYCRAFTERS.
Our afternoon was a success because of the
generosity of these parties as well as our own group
of hardworking members. Our ladies worked hard
selling raffle tickets, baking scones and cakes,
making rosella jam, setting up and cleaning up on the
day. Thankyou also to those non-club members who
also assisted with donations for our grocery hamper
and with the big clean-up effort. Everything is
noticed and appreciated. To everyone –
THANKYOU!
Next month, however, it is back to normal with our
meeting being held on Thursday 2nd July at 2.00pm.
Lea, Celie and Terry offered to cater for the
afternoon.
Anyone interested in joining our group is most
welcome. The cost for the afternoon is $4.50. Any
further enquiries please phone Lyn 41216063 or

BURRUM HEADS RURAL FIRE BRIGADE
Throughout Queensland, there are 44,000 volunteer
Rural Fire Fighters (give or take a few). We cover
the entire state and keeping our outback members
trained and well informed has until now been
through a monthly newsletter, which was an
excellent publication, but limited in size and
content. Given the vast expanses to the west and
beyond, the D E S Media and Corporate
Communications unit has developed an interactive
communication package which contains far more
information than it's predecessor. Our remote area
volunteers can now access all this site has to offer
through the www.
From a training perspective, it will mean that for
the basic entry level training packages, our remote
and isolated recruits will not have to travel great
distances to gain the required skills and basic
underpinning knowledge.
Our local Fire Warden, Eric Rosenberger has
returned from his travels and may be contacted on
4129 5928 for the issuing of permits to light fire.
Stay Safe.
Ken Fardon, (Brigade Training Officer)
For fire permits, phone Eric Rosenberger Ph 4129 5928
‘We wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas, we
wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Rest of the Year!’
Yes, everyone, our Christmas in July is fast approaching and tickets are

Come along and join Santa & Mrs Claus and your Local State Emergency
Service in an evening of fun, laughter, good food and great music
supplied by ‘Kajafa’ rhythm and dance band (50’s, 60’s & 70’s music)
A free glass of wine / soft drink will be provided upon your arrival whilst
you sit and enjoy the company of your friends. Your meal for the evening
will be roast beef, turkey & pork with all of the trimmings, followed by
Christmas pudding with custard or pavlova and fresh fruit. Coffee and
tea will also be available.
Lucky door prizes, raffles, and lots of little Christmas treats will be
provided to all those girls and boys who Santa has ticked off his naughty
and nice list.
Santa will also be looking for the best Christmas outfit so get into the fun and win yourself a prize.
Tickets can be booked at the Burrum Traders on the corner of Burrum Street and Burrum Heads
Road, or phone Heather or Darryl on 4129 5159.
All funds raised on the evening will go towards the fit-out of the new Burrum Heads State Emergency
Service facility to be constructed on the southern side of the Sports Field and Bowls Club.

IN AN EMERGENCY CALL 000
With the cold mornings and the occasional frost
upon us we are still paddling (although some are
taking the option of a later start). It really is quite
pleasant once out on the water with the morning sun
on us and some brisk exercise. However, capsize
drills are definitely out. A canoe maintenance day
was held with a good roll up of senior and junior
members making light work of cleaning and
polishing the six man and two man canoes. Good to
see the juniors being introduced to the necessary
behind the scenes work of maintaining our
equipment in seaworthy order.
We are currently running a raffle. The prize is a
family voucher for a whale watching trip on the
Tasman Venture any time this whale watching
season. To be drawn at the Burrum Heads market at
11am on 11th July. We thank all volunteer ticket
sellers, the Burrum Heads community and the
Progress Association for supporting us in this
venture. Monies raised will go towards uniforms, life
jackets for the OC1/OC2 canoes, and regatta
nominations for the Juniors.
Junior Outriggers:- ( Now paddling Saturdays
8.30am and Sundays 9.30 am)
We now have 18 juniors registered with the club, and
we welcome all new juniors and their families to
outrigging. The juniors have also been busy fund
raising with a chocolate drive raising nearly $1000.
Thanks to all juniors and their families and friends
for this great effort. Proceeds will go towards junior
club uniforms. Whilst we are training the juniors to
give them the opportunity to paddle competitively at
regattas, the emphasis will always be on having fun.
Forthcoming Junior events:-
Sunday 19th July...9.30am Paddle /Fishing/Picnic day
Saturday/Sunday 25/26th July..Regatta..Lake
Awonga..Gladstone.
This is a Juniors only Fun Regatta. Accommodation
will be at Tannum Sands in a school camp site,
giving our juniors a great opportunity to meet other
junior paddlers socially and test their skills out on the
water.

"Coastwide" on the 20th..21st of June.
On the home front, there have been reports of good
whiting catches off Toogoom, and bag limits of
Snapper a little further offshore...No one will tell me
exactly where, but I have sampled the results. Fiona
Bailey has shown the boys how to do it by weighing
in a 3.3kg Snapper at the monthly weigh in.
Our Baffle Creek social weekend has been set down
for 9, 10 and 11 October. Activities available include
beach or river fishing (boat ramp and jetty on site).
Swimming pool, Bowls and Golf facilities are also
available.
A Community Fund Raising Bowls Day will be held
on 12 July commencing at 9.30 am and finishing at
1pm with a BBQ lunch. Monies raised will go
towards the building of a shelter shed at the new
tennis complex. Cost is $10 per person to cover green
fees and lunch. This should be a good "fun" day, so
please come along and support our local community.
We welcome the following new members to our
club:- Merv Baxter, Ron Drysdale, Carol and Vern
Elms, Charlie McMillan, Daryl Coombes and Diane
Walker.
Until next month, Happy Hunting

Dear Lord:
Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm
rings,
Thank you, Lord, that I can hear.
There are many who are deaf.
Even though I keep my eyes closed against the morning light
as long as possible,
Thank you, Lord, that I can see.
Even though I huddle in my bed and put off rising,
Thank you, Lord, that I have the strength to rise.
There are many who are bedridden.
Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are
lost, toast is burnt and tempers are short, thank you, Lord, for
my family.
There are many who are lonely.
Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures
in magazines and the menu is at time unbalanced,
Thank you, Lord, for the food we have.
There are many who are hungry.
Even though the routine of my job often is hard,
Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to work.
There are many who have no job.
Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day,
and wish my circumstances were not so modest,
Thank you, Lord, for life.
A friend is someone we turn to when our spirits need a lift.
A friend is someone we treasure for our friendship is a gift.
A friend is someone who fills our lives with Beauty, Joy and
Grace.
What a friend we have in Jesus!

Healthy Habitats
made an offer to good
to resist – to sponsor
an Open Day at
Cheelii Lagoon in
Burrum Heads.
Friends of Cheelii
Lagoon have been
working to improve
the natural values of
the park for about 18
months. Founding
member, Colleen Weier was the emcee for the day.
Free billy tea and hot damper were ready for early
arrivals. Thanks to Betty, Gay and Debbie for all their
hard work.
Also the Country Moon Bootscooters came out and
gave a display of their skills. The highlight was
lessons given by Annie to the ladies.
On the serious side, Dave Darmody talked about his
job and about what happens to stormwater. Rain
washes any pollutants from our gardens and streets
straight into waterbodies like Cheelii Lagoon – and
from there into the sea. Sara Ashdown introduced the
audience to permaculture and organic gardening.
Roger Currie spoke about the connectivity of the
various water bodies – wetlands, creeks, and rivers.
It was a breezy cool day – with maybe one drop of
rain falling towards the end. To conclude, 3 prize
vouchers from Denise’s Snip and Klipz, the Burrum
Heads Butcher and the By the Sea Store were drawn.
The Friends of Cheelii were very pleased at the turn
out of people from the local community and recruited
2 more helpers.

It's been a busy month for
the Club since the last
edition hit the press with
our last club competition for
the fishing year to contest as
well as the Annual Interclub
competition, this year held at Tin Can Bay. Our
Presentation Night was held at the Burrum Heads Hotel
on 13 June.
The club competition of 15-17 May was the last for our
fishing year. The Ladies best bag was won by Annette
Akers, while Paul Di'Cesare took out the Mens best bag.
Secret weight: Bream - Zorro Tarnawsky, Pike - John
Keam. Leanne Coleman won the lucky draw and Graham
Stretton the lucky virgin prize. The 3 monthly draws were
won by Peter Taylor and Colleen Tarnawsky.
We managed to sneak a little further up the ladder at the
Interclub, coming 4th this year. Toogoom showed us all
up yet again to take home the trophy for the 5th year
running. A group of our members stayed at Point Carlo
for the week to fish and a great time was had by all, but
the fish were really scarce - too much fresh in the water
we were told, it was a nice chocolate colour! The fishers
who stayed in Burrum and came down for the weigh-in on
the Monday saved our pride somewhat. Peter Akers took
off the prize for the biggest snapper, while Leanne
Coleman managed both the biggest bream and the biggest
tailor. Congratulations to Peter and Leanne. Thank you to
Tin Can Bay Club who hosted for the first time and put on
a delicious barbeque lunch, (the desserts were divine).
Our Presentation night went off well with 50 members
and 20 visitors from other clubs attending. It was a busy
night with a delicious meal, presentations, both serious
and fun, and lots of lucky door prizes (thank you to Hervey
Bay Wholesale Nurseries for their kind donation of two
huge potted arrangements to include with our prizes).
Champion anglers on the night were:
Junior Nick Bond
Champion Lady Colleen Tarnawsky
Runner-up Leanne Coleman
Champion Man Paul Di'Cesare
Runner-up Zorro Tarnawsky
Overall Club Champion was Paul Di'Cesare
With the warmer weather beckoning (and needing a big
rest after the Classic effort) our President Max Smith and
wife Gloria headed north for the winter. So that club
business could continue in his absence (which will go
beyond the upcoming AGM), Max has resigned the
position to allow our former Vice President Ken to step in
and keep the Club running smoothly. Thank you Max for
a fantastic effort over the years.
Welcome to new members Carol & Vern and Trevor who
have recently joined our ranks. If you have been thinking
about joining but haven't got around to it now is a good
time, as the competitions for the new fishing year
commence on 21 June. We would love to see some more
juniors in our club so how about all those Mums and Dads
out there joining up with the kids. Membership is $20 for
adults, $7.50 for Juniors, or $40 per family.
If you are interested in finding out more about us you are
welcome to come along to our weigh-in at the Lions Park
at 4:30pm every third Sunday. The next one will be held
on the 21 June. Inquiries about the club please contact
Secretary: Alexandra Wolfendale - 41934115 or President
