Characters: Elma Duckworth- the waitress

• Elma will be wearing a blue and white checkered costume with her hair in pig tails like the picture shown to the left

• Her shoes will be black and she will be wearing panty hoes to cover up her legs. (It shows her modesty)

• With regards to her make up, Elma will have natural looking make-up so that it looks like she isn’t wearing any at all, but just enough so she won’t looked washed out by the lights.

Characters Continued:Grace Hoylard- owner of the diner

and waitress

• Grace will be wearing the same blue checkered dress as Elma is so that there is some unity in the restaurant. But while Elma’s hair is in pig tails, Grace’s hair will be curled and pinned up to show that she is more experienced then Elma and that there is a difference between them, being that she owns the restaurant and has been married before. Plus the fact that she wanted to keep her restaurant professional.

• She will have darker make-up around the eyes but still look natural like Elma, but the audience will be able to tell them apart easier.

Characters Continued:• Will, will be wearing a classic sheriff

outfit, showing off his shiny Kansas Sheriff Badge.

• His top will be tan in color contrasting with his dark green pants, and black belt and jacket since it is cold out. This outfit also works, for when he has to fight Bo because he wont be constrained.

• He will also have to have some make-up on him so that he is not washed out on stage with the lights hitting him, it will be minimal foundation with eyeliner.

Characters Continued

• Carl will be wearing the classic 1950 styled bus uniform all black with a white collared shirt underneath, and a black hat with his companies logo on the front of it.

• He will have a long black trench coat with him because of the blizzard that appeared that night.

• His make-up will be enough so that the light does not drain all of his color, but not enough for the audience to see a huge difference in his complexion. (Just like all of the men in this play)

Characters Continued:Cherie- the Chanteuse

• Cherie will be wearing a mid length red dress with a long black coat to go along with it. Red will compliment her skin color, while also showing her strong personality and her strong will against Bo; while also showing that she is not pure. She will be wearing low black heels also to go along with the time period.

• She will have long curled hair and it will be down to show a difference between her and the waitresses since their hair will be up and hers will be down.

• Her make-up will be darker then the others since she is not from around the same part of Kansas as them and it will show the distinct difference between her and the other girls.

Characters Continued:Bo Decker- a young rancher/cowboy

• Bo will be wearing a white shirt to compliment his jeans along with a black cowboy hat and a black coat. He will be wearing jeans so that he does not have to go off stage to change before his fight with Will. This will give him mobility so that he is not strained when fighting. Along with his jeans, he will have cowboy boots and a belt buckle that compliment his outfit.

• These clothes go well with Bo because his personality is a lot stronger then some of the people in the play and they match his personality perfect.

• He will have little to no make-up so he doesn’t look washed out on stage. But enough to look tan since he works in the field.

Characters Continued:

Virgil Blessing- a ranch hand

• Virgil will be wearing tan cowboy boots, a tan cowboy hat, a blue coat, black jeans and a white shirt; being that almost all of these are clothes are the same as Bo’s just a little different with colors, this will set them apart and let Bo stand out a little more because he will be wearing the dark colors. These colors also go along with Virgil’s personality because he is a lot calmer then Bo.

• Virgil will have the same amount of make-up as Bo does and the same shade because they come from the same place and work outside, so they will both be having darker make-up so that it shoes they have a tan and work outside.

• In this play, Dr. Gerald Lyman is a former college professor and a drunk, being that his previous profession is professional, he will be wearing a black jacket, black slacks, a white collared shirt, and black loafers. But since he is a drunk, his clothes will be somewhat tattered and stained, and he will not be looking clean shaved.

• Throughout this play he will have a drink in his hand and his make-up will be very interesting. Compared to the other men in this play Dr. Gerald will have dark circles under his eyes as if he hasn’t had a good night sleep in days. But once they all fall asleep at the end of the play, after he realizes he’s a drunk, he will wake up without the dark circles, and look somewhat refreshed.

Summary:• All of these Characters Costumes have been decided by

according to their personalities and roles that they have in the play; whether they are a shy rancher or a hard working sheriff. The color and the fit of the costumes also go along with the characters personalities as well as the significance they have to the play. For instance the main characters have brighter and darker colors to stand out, and they all fit according to the characters actions in the play, whether they sing in the play or fight.

• This play is set back to be in the 1950’s and all of the costumes are those that would have been seen in that time period and all go very well with the personalities of the characters depicted in this play.
