specialist post-graduate qualification in anaesthesiology and all have at least two years post-qualification experience as consultant anaesthetists in tertiary level academic units, including intensive care experience at the consultant level. All members have sub-speciality interests and many have completed post-graduate fellowships in specific areas of anaesthe-sia, including cardio-thoracic anaesthe-sia and trans-oesophageal echocardiog-raphy.Our critical care service separates us from most other anaesthetic services. We have a patient centred approach and focus on openess and transparency in keeping families informed about their loved ones. The comprehensive critical care service is offered to patients from all surgical disciplines; the majority of these are general surgery, trauma, neurosur-gery and orthopaedic surgery. We will also manage the critical care aspects of severely ill medical patients referred to us by specialist physicians.

We maintain a “closed unit” approach to our critical care patients, whereby one specialist coordinates the management of the critically ill person during their stay in the intensive care unit. The key feature of our 24-hour critical care service is that we have two special-ist anaesthetists assessing every patient daily. This ensures that we discuss and manage difficult problems by consensus. We readily consult other specialist disciplines over difficult problems which fall outside the scope of critical care. To ensure quality assurance, all critically ill patients are scored, using a clinically validated scoring system (the Apache Score), which allows patient outcomes to be determined and monitored. In addition, we report monthly mortality and morbidity figures at practice meetings to provide ongoing audit of performance. To date, our critical care outcomes are equivalent to results published by critical care units globally.
