Nature of the WorkAll organizations need efficient management and supervision to operate smoothly. Although specific functions of different managers may vary, they do share many common duties. Planning the work of their staff and supervising them are key functions of this job. To do this effectively, the supervisor must know the strengths and weaknesses of each staff member as well as the level of quality and time required for each job. After allocating work assignments and issuing deadlines, supervisors oversee the work to ensure that it is proceeding on schedule and is meeting quality standards. Supervisors and managers also interview and evaluate prospective employees as well as help train new employees in the procedures and operations of the office or business. Finally, the evaluation of a worker’s performance is a crucial role of managerial supervisors.

Working ConditionsAdministrative supervisors and managers are employed in a variety of settings but many employees work in a business office or manufacturing environment with a standard 40- hour work week. Because many organizations work around the clock or in shifts, supervisors and managers may work evenings or weekends and may rotate shifts.

EmploymentBecause many managers and supervisors are promoted from within the ranks of a company, competition for these positions is intense as there are usually more interested candidates than available positions. Individuals with the education and training provided in these programs have a better opportunity for successful employment.
