VISIONS OF THE CITY

Brian Nyinawanga Australian, Rembarrnga, c1935 - 2008

Visions of the City 1993screenprint, colour inks from four stencils, edition 46/7554 x 76 cmFlinders University Art Museum Collection 3023Image © the Estate of the artist

Brian Nyinawanga lived and worked in Central Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. As a painter, printmaker and sculptor he was renowned for his bold experimental practice which distinguished him from other artists of the region.

Visions of the City depicts the bustling metropolis of Sydney, the first major city Nyinawanga visited outside of Darwin. Employing the classic ‘rarrk’ or cross-hatched style typical of a bark painting, Nyinawanga effortlessly captures the pulse of the central business district. In Arnhem Land today the next generation of his people is building their vision for the Rembarrnga community, developing businesses in land management and knowledge exchange for a sustainable and self-sufficient future.

*The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine, 2016.

At the Flinders University New Venture Institute (NVI), Mr Matthew Salier is working to give students an opportunity to gain all kinds of entrepreneurial experience before they graduate, providing an environment to pursue bold new ideas.

“We want more entrepreneurs with the skills and insight to make a real difference, so our program is about entrepreneurial thinking, innovation and creativity,” Mr Salier said.

More than 200 business executives have been involved in guiding well over 1000 students through the NVI’s programs since 2013, resulting in more than 100 start-ups.

“The NVI is open to any student at the University with an idea or a goal to be able to make change because we understand that some of the best ideas come from the most unlikely places,” Mr Salier said.

“We want to empower people to go out and start their own business, giving them the skills and knowledge to start down that road,” Mr Salier said.

Mr Matthew Salier, Director, New Venture Institute

Alongside the start-up creation programs, NVI connects students to businesses as a core component of their education. Working in small consulting teams, students address business challenges that are client driven, delivering solutions to drive business growth.

“These embedded business experiences ensure Flinders graduates are equipped to be future employees or future employers for the growth businesses of tomorrow,” Mr Salier said.

An NVI Fund under the University’s trust provides students with the resources to advance their ideas and seek start-up capital. Students are able to undertake a trip to America to experience the strong entrepreneurial market within partner universities and independent business incubators.

“As a university we want our students to be at the forefront of the graduate market,” Mr Salier said.

“Having these experience and these qualities is a key way to achieve this. We want to encourage our students to experiment and take chances, that’s how we at Flinders and the NVI can make a real impact on the world.”

Social and cultural entrepreneurs play a vital role in a vibrant society alongside economic entrepreneurs – using their knowledge to take calculated risks in order to create something new.
