The foundation is planning to start seven schools by mid of 2013 in Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh, and complete the target of all the 1,300 schools by 2025.
Opportunities in the sector
Indo — US summit expected to open new avenues
One of the major events that took place in the
month of October was the first India — US education summit at Georgetown University, Washington. The
summit, aimed to strengthen higher education collaboration and exchange between India and the US, discussed topics such as accreditation, research partnerships, and joint degrees. As India is coming up with the Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill, this will help US universities to enter India, and participate in India’s vision of building additional 1000 universities and 50,000 colleges.
Opportunities coming up in vocational education space
There is an opportunity coming up for vocational
courses provider, as Indian education system is expected to go through a major change in 2012. The government is deciding to introduce a seven-level vocational educational program. Under the program, first four levels will overlap with the K-12 system, starting from class IX, while the other three levels will be applicable to colleges and higher-educational institutions.
The program, National Vocational Education Qualification Framework, will offer vocational courses to school students, which will help them attain required skills for employment mainly in private sector. The program is designed in a manner, that students can anytime switch from formal education to job-oriented skill development courses, and also come back, or continue both simultaneously. The courses, which will be of international standards of quality and productivity will help in providing employment to over 150 million students who do not have access to higher education. They will be targeted to sectors such as automobile, information technology and telecom, hospitality, infrastructure and others. The government will be starting the pilot project in the state of Haryana.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is
working toward integrating formal education with vocational education. AICTE will design the courses on the bases of available employment opportunities, as well as the geographical locations and socio-economic culture of the places. The courses will help students to continue the same stream in colleges in form of a diploma, which they have studied in schools.
New courses are creating potential for service providers
In order to take its curriculum beyond blackboards,
Delhi University has introduced a new course on innovation, called B Tech/BS Innovation. The course, which will be a four-year undergraduate program of the innovation cluster being planned by the university, will focus on the application and hands-on training. The course will make students spend time in both real, as well as artificial laboratories, and pursue their innovative skills. Having total duration of eight semesters, it will also require students to undertake community projects and industry internships.
ICT players have opportunities to capture overseas market
Players in ICT domain have got an opportunity in
Kuwait, which is replacing its textbooks with e-books. The Arab state has launched a program, estimated worth US$9,39,052 (INR4.6 crore) to replace approximately 900 textbooks into e-books, and distribute them in form of approximately 3,70,000 flash memory units. The program, aimed at making reading exciting and appealing, with start with the high-school students.
Other Prominent Trends in the Sector
Governments are bringing in new regulations to govern the education system
Education sector is witnessing new government
regulations. As the sector is growing at a fast pace, both center as well as state governments are introducing new regulations to keep a check on it.
Maharashtra state government is planning to
introduce a bill in the winter session of the state legislature, which will help in curbing the fake educational institutions in the state. The Maharashtra Unauthorized Institutes and Courses in Technical and Vocational Education Bill will have adequate provision to control the fake institutes, who lack adequate infrastructure, or make false promises regarding placements. The bill will have provisions, under which, the institutes will have to refund the fees, pay fine of INR1 lakh — INR5 lakh, and even face imprisonment of a year.
India is witnessing an excess supply of engineering
colleges, as many engineering seats go empty every year. The country has approximately 3,393 engineering colleges that have 14.85 lakhs seats available. According to AICTE estimates, approximately two lakh seats remained unfilled, when admissions closed in 2011. AICTE therefore, is planning to control the number of engineering colleges, after it had received letters from states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Chhattisgarh, not to clear proposals for new engineering institutes. It has further asked state governments to send it the copies of perspective plans of all universities, so that it can control and map the growth of colleges.

The directorate of education (DoE) is working on
regulating the pre-primary education in Goa. DoE, which has registered close to 450 schools so far in the state, is working on the guidelines of Right to Education Act (RTE) 2009, which mentions the Free and Compulsory Education, and regulation of pre-primary education. As per the RTE, states —which have been given a three-year deadline by the center — have to provide free pre-school education to children in the age group 3–6 as preparation for school education.
The state of Haryana is implementing the Right to
Education Act in state-run schools from November 11, 2011. The act is aimed at providing free and compulsory education to all children from 6 to 14 years of age. The act also states that it will be the concerned state’s responsibility to bear the child’s education costs, along with ensuring that the child completes full eight years of schooling with adequate attendance.
US is becoming a favored destination, while going to UK is becoming difficult
The US is still preferred as a favored higher-
education destination by Indian students. The US visa applications by Indian students have increased by 18%, from 39,958 in 2010 to 46,982 in 2011, according to the US embassy. Two major reasons behind the increasing trend are the lack of quality higher-education institutions in India, and the ongoing crisis in Europe, which has made it a less lucrative destination, due to decreasing job prospects.
Another favored destination, UK has got issues with
the Indian banks. Indian students, aspiring to go to the UK for higher studies, might face tough time as the UK Border Agency has blacklisted approximately 1,950 Indian banks for visa related purposes. As most of the banks are cooperatives, primarily located in rural and semi urban areas, students might face issues in approaching other 85 banks included in the list, where they do not hold the savings accounts. According to the new rules, the visa applicants will have to attach a financial statement for the purpose of verifying their maintenance funds, under Tier–4 of the points-based system. The UK is the second major destination for Indian students, and granted approximately 50,000 students visas in 2010.
