Kick-starting sustainable successIndependent footwear label Piola, set upa few years ago by Solent businessmanagement graduate Quentin Richardand his co-founder Antoine Burnier, aims to establish a sustainable businesswith rubber and organic cottonproducers in Peru – with Piola payingthree to five times the market price fortheir materials.Quentin and Antoine have also foundinnovative ways to fund their business.Instead of seeking funding from a bankor venture capital company, theKickstarter crowdfunding platform

allows people like Quentin to publicisetheir project and collect pledges fromthe public, providing the capital to getPiola off the ground. “Crowdfunding is a wonderful toolwhich helped us build our company, finance our production and get newclients and press articles on aworldwide market,” said Quentin, who graduated from Solent in 2009.Only 28 per cent of the fashionbusinesses launching a project on a crowdfunding platform obtain theexpected funding – but Piola hit its$60,000 target in just 25 days, and

raised over $85,000 overall. UsingKickstarter also helped Piola convinceAmerican stores to consider itsproducts, since the funding platform is popular in the USA. “Our project is very important to us,”said Quentin. “The development ofeconomic and social projects with ourproducers in Peru is the base of ourbrand. And thanks to Kickstarter, peopleknow that there are alternative andrealistic economic models in thefashion industry or for other types of product.”
