n WELCOME

It’s hard to believe we are about to enter into the final quarter of 2011. The time has gone so quickly but progress has been excellent from a Chamber perspective and I am looking forward to further progression through the remainder of the year and into 2012.

Locally quarter three has seen the Chamber relocate to its new offices within the University of Chester’s Riverside Innovation Centre, created to help inspire and develop business potential. Jointly funded by the European Regional Development Fund, this vibrant hub in the heart of Chester offers space for innovative business start-ups; access to support and expertise; conference and meetings facilities. The Chamber is working closely with all those key partners involved in the new Centre to ensure that the Chamber is at the heart of Business Support in the area. We have also seen some great networking events which have helped bring together a diverse range of businesses and provide a network which will help our members prosper – remember all Chamber networking is FREE of charge so please keep your eye on our forthcoming calendar of events on the website to see what’s on and when.

July saw our Summer Cocktail Party at the Eaton Estate where over 85 guests enjoyed the superb surroundings, live music, champagne and canapés and our thanks go to His Grace, The Duke of Westminster for his provision of such a fabulous venue.

Regionally saw the third meeting of the Chamber’s Business Council which convened at the OpTic Glyndwr in St Asaph and brought together key economic stakeholders from across West Cheshire and North Wales. The Council debated key issues affecting the regional economy such as A55 performance, Apprenticeships and Planning. We also saw the meeting of the Managing Directors Forum which saw some key business leaders debate the issues affecting North Wales. Both Forums provide a fantastic opportunity for the Chamber to engage in matters affecting its members. As we move forward we look ahead to further such meetings which again see the Chamber driving the growth of business across West Cheshire and North Wales

Nationally the Chamber was recognised by the British Chambers of Commerce as having met the agreed accreditation. We are one of just 53 chambers in the UK to achieve such status.

Accreditation brings with it a series of clear benefits for you, our members. Firstly, you are part of a powerful network of businesses stretching across the whole of the UK.

The BCC is the ultimate business network, and no other business organisation has its geographical spread. In addition, accredited chambers are required to use the combined code principles of good corporate governance and be an Investor in People.

These competencies are then used to deliver core services to member businesses and the wider business community. A rigorous process of self-assessment and external verification by independent assessors – overseen by an accreditation board – guarantees a minimum service level nationwide.

As we move into the last three months of 2011 the Chamber Team continues to work for the utmost benefit of its membership. Plans to grow and expand our operations are taking shape and I would encourage all members to make use of all the great services we have to offer.

Colin Brew General Manager

The £6 million Riverside Innovation Centre, based at the University of Chester’s Riverside Campus, is ready to help develop untapped business potential and hopes to address the statistics that highlight regional shortcomings.

Professor Tim Wheeler, the University of Chester’s Vice Chancellor said: “When we applied to the European Development Fund (ERDF) for financial backing, we were able to highlight the vital contribution of small business growth to the regional economy.

“The Prime Minister David Cameron has referred to the job creation capability of small, high growth firms, adding that ‘...so far from ignoring the start ups, the insurgents if you like, we should be laying out the red carpet for them’. Professor Wheeler continued: “There was a record number of 279,000 business closures nationally in 2009, and it’s clear that the North West can’t afford to stand still. We lost 30,000 businesses across the region, around 1,500 of which were in Cheshire West and Cheshire, while there were just 24,000 business births, around 1,200 locally. Realistically, the statistics for 2010 are likely to tell a similar story.”

So where does this leave Chester and the North West? Professor Wheeler said: “It’s more vital than ever to support business start ups and prevent talented individuals from leaving the region. This is exactly where the Riverside Innovation Centre comes in. Not only are we providing a state-of-the-art centre to foster entrepreneurial talent, we are offering wider services to the local business community to help secure its future.”

Part-funded and supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Riverside Innovation Centre is the University of Chester’s new innovation-focused business start-up support facility. As one of region’s

leading business support facilities it offers a unique regional network of business specialists and academics and cutting-edge facilities to help build businesses across the North West. Based in the heart of Chester at the University of Chester’s Riverside Campus, it provides a perfect base for new ventures to develop their business ideas.

Professor Wheeler concludes: “We are particularly focusing on encouraging start ups that target the North West’s most successful industries: biomedical; health; food; business and professional services and digital and creative media. We can offer exceptional mentoring in these areas, giving the start ups and existing businesses we support the best possible chance for business growth and we look forward to helping to launch more small businesses across our region.”

Start-up growth focus for new business hubChester’s new business incubation hub has set itself the task of challenging some of the key problems facing business in the North West, whilst encouraging the region to focus on new business growth.

British Chambers of Commerce Accreditation – What it means to you

Accreditation brings with it a series of clear benefits for you, our members. Firstly, you are part of a powerful network of businesses stretching across the whole of the UK.

The BCC is the ultimate business network, and no other business organisation has its geographical spread.

To achieve full accreditation, local chambers must perform to exemplary levels in core competencies including:

l Governance

l Human resources

l Marketing and communications

l Customer care

l Finance

l Planning and development

l Information communications technology

l Quality

In addition, accredited chambers are required to use the combined code principles of good corporate governance and be an Investor in People.

These competencies are then used to deliver core services to member businesses and the wider business community.

A rigorous process of self-assessment and external verification by independent assessors – overseen by an accreditation board – guarantees a minimum service level nationwide.

Colin Brew, the chamber’s general manager, said: “The fact that we have once again achieved full accreditation means our members can be assured that we are working to the highest standards on their behalf.

“In addition, as a BCC-accredited chamber we provide our members with numerous benefits including a legal expenses and HR service. Our accreditation gives us, and by extension our members, greater credibility and gravitas when representing them.”

The West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber has recently had its accreditation to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) renewed. We are one of just 53 chambers in the UK to achieve such status.

What is The North West 500?The North West 500 is a campaign to engage businesses across the North West to work together with Young Enterprise in a joint mission to practically invest and nurture the future talent of the region. Together we can support young people to develop a practical application of the employability skills needed for the region to sustain its recovery.

What’s in it for my Business? For employers who make a commitment to joining the North West 500, supporting young people from within and around your local

community to participate in Young Enterprise Programmes, the benefits can broadly be described as three fold.

Short - Medium Term Employees who engage as volunteers in the delivery of the programme will benefit from an opportunity to develop a range of professional development skills. This in term also adds value to your business. All employees will be fully trained and receive support from Young Enterprise staff.

Dr John Williams, Director at Nu-Instruments

Ed Barnes, Partner at DTM Legal looks at the importance of a powerful contract for renewable energy developers.Renewable or green energy is a fast growing part of the UK economy, with subsidies and feed-in tariffs providing impetus for investors in energy supplier companies. Only last month the DECC announced that production from Britain’s wind farms increased by 131% from April to June compared with the same period last year. Whilst generation schemes can vary in size from a handful of solar panels to a large scale wind turbine farm, the legal issues remain much the same.

Typically a renewable energy development company will require investment funds. However, before pursuing this avenue it would be useful to outline what legal issues any investors will want to see addressed before proceeding to release cash.

Banks will often want to see at least 12 months statistics on wind speeds or hours of sunlight, backed up by credible academic research. Technical experts don’t generally give warranties with their work, so finding a credible data source is crucial. It’s vital that experienced and reputable companies in the field supply any power projection figures.

Assuming investors like what they see, a series of key documents need to be negotiated. These would probably include joint development agreements, where the roles and responsibilities as investor and developer are clearly stipulated. This would include defining the key procedures, roles and financial figures before starting out.

Before building anything the questions surrounding land ownership, access rights or any points relating to the lease must be looked at of course. The land rights may form part of the security provided to investors too, so if such rights are assigned to a developer, then it’s important to ensure land rights can be transferred at a later stage. The planning rules surrounding the type of development and the location also need to be assessed carefully.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) is perhaps one of the most important points to look at, as it defines what power companies will pay for the energy generated, over the lifespan of the particular project. It is essential that the power company doesn’t have the right to penalise the developer if a lack of sun, tidal movement or wind strength means power cannot be generated. In some countries, such as Germany, the feed-in tariff is set by statute, but it’s important to note if any tariffs will be negotiated locally, or varied in future, according to demand.

Once building is underway it’s usually a good idea to have just one company responsible for the project management and that all site responsibilities, building schedule and costs etc are clearly defined in an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract. Any warranty or equipment maintenance issues also need to be looked at and it’s probably wise to choose a construction partner that has experience in the sector and can set out terms that leave both developer and investor happy.

As regards wind power projects, the turbine suppliers often act as construction service provider too, whereas with solar panel facilities, the manufacturer may have an approved installer list, or leave it to the purchaser to arrange all installation. If so, there is a potential risk allocation on any panels during shipment and banks may insist that the risks and responsibilities during transit are clearly defined in advance.

The UK renewable energy market is buoyant and the opportunities are there for investors and developers alike. But never underestimate the power and reassurance of having an effective contract in place.

Procurement Professionals Join Chamber to Reduce Members’ Business CostsNorth West based procurement consultancy NJG Purchasing Services Limited has joined the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce in order to provide a FREE cost reduction service to its members.

Backed by more than 25 years of purchasing experience, NJG Purchasing Services Limited specialises in reviewing and negotiating the purchase of a wide range of business products, services and other common overheads such as packaging, office supplies, communications, insurance, work wear and printing. Since the company’s inception in January 2004, it has generated savings in excess of £3 million for companies of all sizes and sectors.

NJG Purchasing Services Limited will seek to help members to achieve significant cost savings on a variety of commodities. It will do this by consolidating demand on the part of multiple Chamber members in order to generate leverage and negotiate improved prices, terms and service levels. The details of each Chamber member’s details remain confidential and there are no contracts to sign.

Neil Grime, Managing Director of NJG Purchasing Services Limited commented: “We believe that this is a very beneficial agreement, for members but also for our organisation. The greater the participation by Chamber members, the greater the purchasing power that we can bring to bear and thus, the more savings we can generate.

“Our experience has shown that even many large organisations struggle to effectively manage the procurement of their overheads, and these are businesses that typically have far more resources than most Chamber members. Historically, certain financial obstacles have prevented smaller SMEs from accessing professional procurement services but this new approach means that those barriers have been removed at a stroke. It now gives us the opportunity to reduce the members’ cost base and, thus, to boost their profitability.”

As part of the service, NJG Purchasing Services Limited carries out an assessment of each Chamber member’s demand for different commodities and, through discussion, takes

account of any specific requirements and constraints.

“We visit each Chamber member at a time that is convenient to them and we collect the data and any other information that might be relevant,” explains Neil. “The process doesn’t take long and we stay in regular contact, advising members of progress, reporting our findings and providing all the necessary assistance to implement the savings we have identified. We provide assistance on an ongoing basis and we will report the actual savings that have been obtained by each member. We do all this on the client’s behalf so that members can spend more of their own time where it really counts – on the activities that make them money.”

NJG Purchasing Services Limited has recently helped a North West engineering company to reduce their costs on photocopiers and printer consumables by 17% and 57% respectively. This has been conducted on an individual basis but it does demonstrate the level of

savings that can be achieved by utilising a specialist resource but the important point to remember for members of the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber is that this new service will be provided free of any charges.

“The more members that initially take part the better, as it will maximise our leverage and the level of savings we can achieve. There is simply nothing to lose and everything to gain.” advised Neil Grime.

Anyone interested in obtaining more detailed information about the service itself should contact Neil Grime at [email protected] or by calling 01257 232602 or 07813 806344.

20 QUESTIONS n

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Magazine 13

What brings you to the industry?I was destined for a career in engineering! My great grandfather was an engine builder at Vauxhall Ironworks which became Vauxhall Motors in south London. My grandfather too was a toolmaker at Vauxhall in Luton and my father became press shop manager at Vauxhall, Ellesmere Port.

What advice would you give anybody wanting to get into this industry?Fundamentally you must be comfortable dealing with people. The industry has changed so much in the last 30 years. The generalist banker role still exists but the opportunity to specialise in a diverse financial market place means that you should be prepared to switch to different parts of the industry.

What is the most important thing you look for in a new recruit? That’s an easy one to answer. Attitude and enthusiasm. Within reason, you can teach everything else.

If you could employ anybody from the world of business who would it be and why?John Timpson, CBE. A local businessman who runs a successful nationwide chain. The thing I like about Timpson’s is the autonomy that each employee has to make decisions which are right for their business in their location.

As a business person, describe your three main qualities? A dependable, enthusiastic, good communicator.

And your worst quality?Intolerance!

What has been your most satisfying moment in business? There have been many. If I have to choose one it would be having enough trust in my relationship with an MD to tell him he needed a new MD if his business was to survive and seeing that through with him to a point where

he sold his business to his successor and an MBO team 2 years ago. If he reads this he knows who he is!

What do you always carry with you to work?Apart from the usual business equipment, my iPod and a bottle of olbas oil!

Would you say you live for work or work to live?I definitely work to live. However I really enjoy my job and the colleagues I work with are dedicated professionals and make coming into the office worthwhile.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met – what were they like?Sir Matt Busby. He was an absolute gentleman and as a Manchester United fan a fantastic moment for me. I met him again 12 months later, and he remembered my name!

Who in your view is your industry’s role model and why?Given the media coverage of my industry in the last 3 years, it would be easy to see everyone in the sector as a pariah. I can only really speak parochially and say that Stephen Hester is doing a very good job at getting the RBS Group back on track.

What is your biggest achievement?Fathering two beautiful, intelligent and personable daughters.

What was your first job and the amount in your first pay packet?I worked as a Saturday sales assistant at Duttons Menswear in Chester. They had two stores one located on Bridge Street and a larger one which is now Argos on Foregate Street. I was paid around £8 a day. Great fun !

If you could chose to work for any company in the world which would it be and why?McLaren. A business whose goal is to be the industry leader both on the track and in high performance road cars. I would love to meet the Chairman, Ron Dennis who I am sure is very challenging, but having survived in a very

competitive, cutting edge environment, would have huge experience from which I could benefit.

If you won the lottery would you retire?Yes, if I won enough for my wife to retire too and we could live comfortably and ensure my daughters had a good start in their adult lives. I have a desire to travel, but would work in a voluntary capacity.

Do you make time for lunch every day?I try to, even if that is a 20 minute walk around the city.

What is a normal day for you?Awake by 5.30, read e mails on my blackberry whilst making a cup of tea and then walk the dog for 45 minutes.Generally my time is spent in internal meetings, customer visits with my relationship managers and some networking. My favourite day of the month is when I host an entrepreneur lunch for a group of customers and I really enjoy the wide ranging debate around the table.

If you could work in a completely different field what would it be?There were two things I really wanted to do.One was to be long distance trucker and the other was to work as a keeper at Chester Zoo

If you could turn the clock back what would you have changed about your business career?I think I would have moved to work in London. In saying that I am very happy to have started my career in Chester and I couldn’t have imagined being back in Chester as the director of Commercial banking. I am not sure a move to London would have delivered that.

What hobbies do you have?I play golf a couple of times a week and although my handicap has slipped out of single figures in the last month I know my greatest round is still to come! I enjoy motorsport, walking and cooking. I am a lifelong Manchester United supporter and get to Old Trafford at least 10 times a season , but having been raised in the city I also watch Chester…

How to introduce Welsh to your business

Using Welsh is good for business. You only need to walk along any high street in Wales to see how true this statement is. There are thousands of businesses all over Wales - large and small – who are very keen to use Welsh.

Language policyBusinesses can plan how to increase their use of Welsh by drawing up a Welsh language policy. Language policies show what the business currently does in Welsh and what it intends to do to increase the use of the language.

The Welsh Language Board has a language policy template to make it easier for businesses to adopt a policy. Over 470 businesses currently have a language policy, and many more have expressed interest in creating a policy in the near future.

The business benefits of investing in the Welsh language are numerous – increased customer loyalty and improved PR are the obvious advantages. That’s why there is so much interest among the business community to develop a language policy.

Expert helpThe Welsh Language Board has a dedicated team of Business Officers who provide expert guidance and practical support to help businesses to adopt language policies and to increase and develop their use of Welsh.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE n

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Magazine 15

Cheshire’s most enterprising people and businesses attended an evening reception at Buckingham Palace on July 14th, after they were announced as this year’s winners of the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2011. Three businesses from Cheshire will have the opportunity to meet Her Majesty The Queen and other members of the Royal Family: the ultimate recognition of their commitment to enterprise and innovation.

The winners include Barrett Dixon Bell from Altrincham and Genesys from Middlewich, who both win The Queen’s Award for International Trade, and EA Technology from Capenhurst who scooped The Queen’s Award for Innovation.

Genesys International Limited formulates, manufactures and distributes a range of speciality antiscalent and cleaning chemicals for the water industry. The chemicals are manufactured exclusively in Middlewich and distributed overseas by over 40 appointed distributors. Over 90% of the company’s turnover comprises exports and overseas orders have trebled in the last 6 years.

Managing Director Stephen Chesters says, “This is the second time we have won The Queen’s Award for Enterprise and I feel it is a great recognition of our success in the water industry worldwide.

“Winning The Queen’s Award shows that British companies can do business anywhere in the world with a technically sound product, and we are extremely proud to be winning it for the second time.”

Henry Dixon of Barrett Dixon Bell Ltd adds, “We are an international trade, technical and scientific marketing communications agency, targeting food and drink, chemicals, engineering, construction and packaging industries. In the last 6 years we have grown our overseas income by 143% to total over £10 million, and we are delighted to have won The Queen’s Award for International Trade.”

Neil Davies, Development Director, says, “The Queen’s Award for Innovation is a great honour for the company and for all the team. The award carries real weight around the world and confirms our position as innovators of highly specific equipment in the field of energy technology. The Queen’s Award is a top industrial honour and I feel it reinforces Cheshire’s standing as a centre of excellence in the industry.”

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “It’s important we create the right conditions for Britain’s new and up- and-coming entrepreneurs to succeed and I strongly encourage businesses to start thinking about nominations for next year.”

Anyone who has helped individuals to develop entrepreneurial approaches and achievements with a view to starting or building a business can be nominated for The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion. These activities can be at both at national or local level.

The awards are made annually by HM The Queen and are only given for the highest levels of excellence demonstrated in each category. They are judged to a demanding level and winners

receive a number of benefits and worldwide recognition.

The application/nomination period for The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2012 is now open and closes on October 31. Winners will be announced on April 21 2012.

Summer Cocktails at the Eaton Estate The West Cheshire & North Wales hosted a fabulous Summer Cocktail Party on 28th July in the grounds of the Eaton Estate. The event was attended by over 85 guests who enjoyed an evening of networking, champagne, canapés and live music. The evening was introduced

by the Chamber Chairman John Newton Jones who thanked all those attending for their ongoing support of the Chamber and also his grace, the Duke of Westminster for providing such a wonderful setting for the event.

Attending business networking events can help to build contact lists. Six important tips to consider for your next networking event:

Attending the same events regularly as different people will be there every time

Look for and take business literature set out by attendees

Be prepared to pitch your company and inform why people need your services rather than your competitors

Ensure you collect everyone’s business card or ask for an attendee list, if there is anyone you missed

Attending the event is only part of the story - the story goes nowhere without follow up, be it by telephone or email.

A soon after the event as possible make notes on the back of the business cards you’ve collected - as a memory jogger include where and when you met and what their needs are.

Although there are many different events, success is usually based on the same elements of business networking, so good preparation can help make any event an effective marketing activity for your business.

The Welsh Government has commissioned four studies aimed at improving understanding of exports, high growth companies, the labour market and entrepreneurs in Wales.

Robert Huggins of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, will try to answer the question: “What makes a successful entrepreneur in Wales?”

Other studies include “Exporting activity and productivity in Wales: a micro-economic analysis”, led by Catherine Robinson of Swansea University.

Pornsawan Evans of Swansea University will

investigate the comparative performance and sustainability of high-growth businesses in Wales with help from Swansea Metropolitan University and the University of Leeds.

And labour market transitions in Wales will be put under the spotlight by Melanie Jones of Swansea University with backing from Cardiff University.

The research grants of between £10,000 and £20,000 were designed to help develop research capacity and widen knowledge of the economy in Wales by encouraging innovative, smaller-scale economic research.

They were introduced on the recommendation of the Economic Research Advisory Panel, the Welsh Government’s economic research think tank.

The studies will start this autumn and are due to be completed during the following 18 months.

Cheshire West & Chester Commission New Research to Gauge Business needsCheshire West and Chester Council recently completed two significant pieces of work to get an up to date view of the local economy; the Local Economic Assessment and Business Needs Survey.

Both of these pieces of work are intended to assist with targeting support available to local business, to enable a better understanding of the area’s economy and enhance the support role of local economic development.

The assessment encompassed some of the key factors that determine the success of a local economy.

Some opportunities identified:

l Availability of experienced and skilled workforce not all of whom are work within the borough.

l The area has a significant strength as a location for a variety of service sector activities.

l The area has some less obvious strength in areas such as science, technology and R&D as well as niche activities such as veterinary services.

l Chester remains an important focus for employment and has significant in- commuting as well as links given proximity to North Wales.

l The strength of the ‘Chester’ brand and its transport links, which are likely to generate continued investment interest.

However threats included:

l Population ageing faster than UK average could erode economic activity levels and wealth generated.

l Ageing population and low levels of migration are expected to limit population growth.

l Declining household size will result in a need for appropriate scale of new house building.

l Higher paid residents are increasingly seeking employment opportunities outside the Authority (Liverpool, Manchester and Warrington).

l Potential decline in employment in market towns may diminish their vibrancy and create dormitory status.

l Parts of CWAC remain susceptible to continued declines in manufacturing.

In parallel with the Assessment, the councils of Cheshire and Warrington commissioned BMG Research to undertake a Business Needs Survey. 500 West Cheshire businesses were interviewed during January and February 2011 – intentionally sampled to be representative in terms of sector and size.

The results from the survey give some indication of business confidence and future optimism, indicating that businesses are still hesitant about the coming 12 months, however nearly a third expect their business climate to improve over the next 12 months, with just under a quarter expecting a worsening climate.

A quarter of businesses in the area intend to expand their geographic market over the next 12 months. The survey identified a relatively low rate of recruitment difficulty – only 8% of respondents reported having a hard-to-fill vacancy in the year prior to survey. Other messages from the survey covered choice of location, training, the environment, IT infrastructure and sources of advice.

The full reports are available from the Policies and Partnerships section of the council’s business web page:

n THE BIG INTERVIEW

bigTHE

INTERvIEWSally Wightman Partner, Hill Dickinson

Maintaining focus, the key to commercial successFor Sally Wightman, a partner at leading law firm Hill Dickinson, the key to the company’s success despite hard economic times has always been its strength of focus and its ability to offer service excellence whatever the client‘s needs may be.

Page 23: Business Matters #07

THE BIG INTERVIEW n

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Magazine 23

Sally joined Hill Dickinson as a partner in 2007 and was appointed to lead the corporate/commercial team in the Chester office.

Her legal career had started at the Manchester office of Addleshaw Goddard in 1985, after which she went to work for Frere Cholmeley in London and, prior to Hill Dickinson, as a partner with DLA Piper in Manchester.

Since joining Hill Dickinson, she has advised on a substantial number of acquisitions and disposals, shareholders agreements, joint ventures and general company and commercial law issues for companies and businesses based in Chester, Cheshire, North Wales and further afield.

She said: “It’s a widely recognised fact that the recession had a direct impact on the level of corporate activity in the marketplace. Hill Dickinson is able to sustain its prominent position in the sector due to our breadth of specialism and experience in corporate/commercial issues.

“We are able to satisfy all of our clients’ requirements from the corporate/commercial perspective as the economic and business environment changes. We can satisfy clients’ needs both commercially and legally as their requirements fluctuate.

“In Chester, our relationships with existing clients have also placed us in a position of strength. We place a great deal of emphasis upon building long term client relationships and familiarising ourselves with the individual requirements of each client. We continue to receive major instructions both from existing and new clients.

“As we are a locally-based practice with a national and an international presence, our business model matches that of many of our clients here in the region and allows us to service their UK national and global demands. Again, this has given us a positive advantage over our competitors.”

She sees 2011 as a challenging and exciting year. Sally said: “Our most immediate challenge is one that has positive connotations. There are many leading, commercial entities in

Cheshire and North Wales that have a need for legal advice relating to corporate/commercial and general business matters.

“We are constantly seeking to grow our client base and to support these businesses. To maximise our potential in the marketplace and make a real impact we have assembled an experienced and capable team. We continue to enhance the quality of the corporate/ commercial team here in Chester. This allows us to develop our business further and to cross-refer work to expert lawyers in a complete range of disciplines within the practice of Hill Dickinson.

“The commercial sector in Cheshire and North Wales includes some very significant enterprises, particularly on the manufacturing and financial services front. We want to ensure that these types of business, which often operate on a multi-national basis, are aware of the breadth and geographical reach of Hill Dickinson’s offering. This reach is available at a local level and a realistic cost.

“Our firm has continued to grow, in spite of the recession. Last year saw an influx of specialist corporate and commercial lawyers into the firm, following the strategic acquisition of teams from Halliwells and other lateral hires. This means we have a wider range of expert lawyers in place than ever before.

“We have additional offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, London, Singapore and Greece. This places us in a unique position in the local marketplace as a law firm with national and international strength, and a Chester office.

“Our teams in Chester are very familiar with the regional market. We have an in-depth understanding of and affinity with the regional business community but we also act as a gateway to the full range of Hill Dickinson’s expertise and international capabilities. We hope to convey this to clients and potential clients as we continue to progress.”

Sally sees the company’s relationship with the Chamber as important. She said: “Our relationship with the Chamber plays a crucial role in the firm’s awareness campaign, allowing us to engage with the regional business community and our peers in a direct and relevant manner.

“In terms of networking, the Chamber offers clear opportunities on the business development front. But we don’t see our membership strictly in business development terms. It is very important to us that we play an active role in the local business community, add our voice to any campaign that might be of mutual benefit and continue to underline the strength of the professional services sector in the region.”

n DENBIGHSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

Prestigious Regeneration award for RHYL

Denbighshire County Council’s regeneration of the seaside town of Rhyl received a major plaudit in May when one of the Council’s flagship projects was declared the winner of the regeneration category of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ awards for Wales 2011. The project concerned was the restoration of a derelict property in Edward Henry Street in the heart of the town’s west ward which in the last few years had made a regular appearance at the top of the Welsh Government’s “Index of Multiple Deprivation”.

In its heyday, the 1865 built property had been split into a pair of prominent four storey villas which featured in a painting by the Salford born artist L S Lowry who used to spend his holidays in Rhyl. By the time the Council acquired them in 2005, they had fallen on hard times: they were in a crime hot spot, had been subject to incidents of arson, and the only residents were pigeons who gained

access through where the bay windows had once been at the rear of the premises.

With financial assistance from the European Regional Development Fund, the Welsh Government and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the villas were restored and converted into one unit with offices available to rent which are now all fully occupied. Although not Listed, the building was considered to be sufficiently important to deserve the Heritage Lottery Fund grant provide through Rhyl’s Townscape Heritage Initiative. The general layout of the building has been retained in accordance with conservation principles but nevertheless

provides all the facilities expected of a modern office building including lift access to upper floors, IT cabling, security features and high energy efficiency.

RICS said that they decided that the project deserved to win the award because of its impact on the wider area and because it represented a “beacon of hope” in this once very elegant part of Rhyl. This is not the first time that the Council’s regeneration work in Rhyl has been acknowledged by RICS: the new Drift Park on the town’s western seafront just a few metres from Edward Henry Street was runner up for the same award in 2008.

Countless businesses will testify to the value – and cost effectiveness – of a well-planned and an integrated marketing mix in broadcasting their products or services to their target audience.

The current economic climate has focused our attention on the bottom line, as companies weigh up the worth of every marketing pound spent.

Marketing is the bridge between clients and customers. Sometimes clients are enticed to cross the bridge if we get the messages right!

Translating and amplifying messages to promote our product or service, and to stand out from the competition, is why we market ourselves.

What underpins all this is an in-depth appreciation of your clients and their specific needs.

Without this platform you are on shaky ground. Whoever your client is, wherever they are, whatever they read and listen to, the key is to consistently disseminate those messages that directly support their business aims. Without that, what is the point?

That is why measuring success is vitally important.

It’s all about ROI – Return on InvestmentOur environment is rapidly changing and clients are demanding ‘profit’ from their investment. If we can’t demonstrate a return on investment how can we expect clients to keep coming back?

One definition of successful marketing is ‘products that don’t come back, from customers that do’.

Do you know your clients well enough to make them come back time and again?

If you cannot answer a loud ‘YES!’ to that question, I look forward to seeing you at our strategic marketing workshop which is an interactive marketing session that may change your business forever!

In his speech, Chris talked about the steps Igloo will be taking in readiness for the Bill being passed into law and how developers, communities and local authorities can prepare for the changes envisaged.

A BBQ and networking evening followed the presentations. Attendees were invited to experience a guided ‘Zoo Safari’, allowing them the opportunity to explore the zoo after the gates had closed to the public. The popular

event attracted over 100 members of the North West business community.

Robin Jones, head of Hill Dickinson’s Chester office commented: “The Developers Conference provided an important insight into the current state of the rapidly changing Localism Bill and an update on the many issues being faced by the property and construction industry. Attendees once again welcomed the opportunity to network with others in the industry and to take an after hours tour of the zoo. All in all the conference was a great success.”

Another year of growth In spite of challenging economic conditions, Hill Dickinson has reported a firm-wide increase in revenue to £100.1m for the year ended 30th April 2011. This represents a 14.9% rise from the year ended 30th April 2010, when turnover was at £87.1m.

Net profit rose to £14.4m from £13.5m the previous financial year.

During the 12 months accounted for in the financial results, the firm acquired the Liverpool and Sheffield offices of Halliwells,

significantly enhancing its commercial offering. Investment continues to be made into the firm, and there have been a number of partner hires during the course of the year. The strength of the firm’s offering and its broad range of expertise has been recognised in a series of recent awards wins, which have included accolades for its claims team, corporate team and property team.

Hill Dickinson Managing Partner, Peter Jackson said of the results, ”It has been a positive year for the firm. We have performed well across the board and are particularly pleased to

see increased activity on the corporate side, with our team having grown significantly. We now look forward to another year of growth and to exploiting the business development opportunities that are on offer to us as a larger firm with enhanced commercial capabilities.”

Head of Hill Dickinson’s Chester office, Robin Jones added, “Our Chester office now acts as a gateway to a more comprehensive range of legal expertise than ever before. The firm has continued to grow, against the backdrop of the recession and this is testament to the broad capabilities that we are able to demonstrate to clients. We believe we have a unique position in the local marketplace, given that we can provide clients with expert legal advice, from locally-based lawyers who have the weight of a large law firm behind them with national and international presence.”

Property expertise recognised in awards winHill Dickinson was named property law firm of the year at the North West Business Insider’s commercial property awards 2011; one of the region’s most prestigious awards events. This follows similar success in both 2009 and 2006. The judges’ citation read: “Hill Dickinson got the nod for an entry that showcased its skills in a variety of fields. The entry highlighted how its team goes the extra mile to cover all bases for its clients.”

David Chinn, head of business services, which incorporates the firm’s property and construction team, said, “It is a fantastic achievement to win this prestigious award for a third time. We have a really strong property and construction team at Hill Dickinson and this is clearly being recognised in the North West marketplace. We place great emphasis on building long-term client relationships and enabling easy access to a broad range of expertise. Our team is committed to continuing this award-winning approach.

Described as the jewel in the crown of Liverpool One, Grosvenor’s One Park West, designed by Cesar Pelli in 2008, comprises 326 apartments, offices parking, restaurants and cafes complemented with stunning waterfront, park and city views.
