I. Introduction to the Business Practicum

What is a practicum? Business Practicum is an internship, a supervised work experience designed to apply academic concepts to actual business situations. Characteristics include:*

Generally a one-time experience.

Practicum may be part of an educational program and carefully monitored and evaluated for academic credit.

An important element that distinguishes a practicum from a short-term job or volunteer work is that an intentional “learning agenda” is structured into the experience.

Learning activities common to most practicums include learning objectives, observation, reflection, evaluation and assessment.

An effort is made to establish a reasonable balance between the students’ learning goals and the specific work an organization needs done.

Practicums promote academic, career and/or personal development.

*Adapted from materials published by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) This handbook refers specifically to the upper level business students taking Business Practicum BUS483 course. The purpose of practicum: to develop professional skills, knowledge and competence through integration of theoretical background and practical experience; through solving daily, real-life business problems. Expected learning outcomes: Upon the completion of the practicum, a student will:

Know their role within the framework of implementation of laws and regulations

Send Business Practicum Application form to: [email protected]. After document submission you will receive an informing letter from the CDC office.

It is the student’s responsibility to make the appropriate arrangements for the practicum and

they should begin this process well before the semester in which they plan to execute the practicum in order to ensure proper approval and to avoid delays.

Business practicum site cannot be approved if:

- It is student’s parents’ company - Student’s supervisor is one of his parents or siblings - Student’s supervisor is another LCC student - Work includes working from home - If you do not have all appropriate pre-requisites (ACC 209, ACC 210, BUS 206, ECO 203, ECO 204, CIS 220, BUS 200).

registration will be confirmed!

2.3. Step 3. Business Practicum Contract. Business Practicum Contract – you will get three copies of this document. 1

Note: Contracts must have all three parties’ signatures. For all Lithuanian placements, contracts are prepared in Lithuanian. See Appendix 5 for the sample of the three-party agreement. The main obligations of the parties are listed below. The university is obliged to:

Verify that the practicum student has received the necessary training;

Assign a practicum instructor, a university teacher who ensures practicum results meet set goals, helps the student prepare, and, if needed, helps to solve problems together with the host organization’s staff;

Provide the supervisor at the host organization with necessary information and materials to work with the practicum student.

“On the job” time is considered the practical,

hands-on portion of the practicum at workplace.

“Independent work” is the time devoted for academic assignments and readings.

Do not forget! If you have sent a copy of the Business Practicum Contract, later you still must bring back the original copy to the CDC office (22a).

The host organization is obliged to:

Provide the student with a working place and ensure suitable working conditions; provide information for implementing the program;

Provide a workplace supervisor for the student who is qualified and has not less than 3 years of experience in the field. This supervisor helps to implement the program plan, and also evaluates student’s performance in the end;

Confirm that all necessary health, safety and fire safety precautions are taken;

Certify the student’s safety, according to health and hygiene norms; if necessary, provide training to work with equipment, work clothes, work shoes, and other individual and collective health and safety measures in accordance with law, unless the parties agree otherwise in this Agreement;

Guarantee that the student is assigned to tasks that are related to the practicum and that the student is not doing tasks that are unrelated to the practicum field;

Provide the student with a document upon the completion of the practicum;

Identify to the student any information in the host-organization that is considered commercial or confidential and also about the possible fines that might be applied for disclosing of this information;

Inform the university about disciplinary cases or the absenteeism of a practicum student. The host organization has the right to allow students to perform their functions independently only when the host organization signs a temporary work contract which is established by law. The student is obliged to:

Communicate with the supervisor from the host institution about the practicum plan no later than the first day of the practicum;

Diligently carry out the assigned tasks; if absent immediately inform the practicum supervisor in the host organization, in case of a disease provide a medical certificate;

Follow the rules, working procedures and additional agreements of the host organization or keep confidential information in secret as mentioned above;

Protect the assets of the host organization, for any material damage caused; be responsible according to the law;

Follow the rules of health and safety and fire regulations;

Inform the university if the tasks assigned in the practicum are not related to the plan or if the host organization does not provide necessary conditions for implementing the tasks;

Prepare a report according to the university requirements; submit the report to the supervisor assigned from the university.

Note! The practicum contract can be prepared by Career Development Center ONLY. The copy of the contract in the Handbook is just for information.

2.4. Step 4. Start your Business Practicum. IMPORTANT: You cannot start your practicum until all three parties will sign the contract!

III. During the practicum.

3.1. Step 1. Fill in the Journal – Time Log DAILY.

Students should document their completion of the required number of hours in a Journal (Time-log). Journal has to be filled daily and presented to CDC Director for evaluation at the end of the practicum. Journals can be monitored randomly. See the sample form in Appendix 3. The form can be downloaded from the web: www.lcc.lt/business-practicum..

3.2. Step 2. Start writing your Course Assignment.

Your course assignment should be: at least 26-28 pages (excluding bibliography, graphs and tables);

Font style should be Times New Roman, font size 12, and line spacing 1.5;

Deadline for Final Submission of the report must be strictly adhered to.

At least 15 bibliography entries should be used;

The purpose of the assignment is to apply your knowledge gained during the studies to the practical settings, therefore your project should conclude with recommendations for your employer (e.g. highlighting key problems, suggesting ideas for improvement, encouraging further research).

You should use the up-to-date resources (up to 5 years). Do not limit yourself to the company’s policies and interviews only. Explore both the professional and academic literature on your topic. The source of all data must be acknowledged. Use supplementary readings and other materials as a basis for your research.

Your paper should follow the set format (see below)!

Carefully define/classify the industry (industries);

Nature of competition (weak vs. strong; oligopoly vs. perfect competition);

Key existing competitors, their powers:

Potential competitors;

Strengths and weaknesses of the main competitors;

How does the company collect the information about its competitors? Who is involved in doing this?;

How does the company respond to its competition? (e.g. passively watching, copying, always trying to be ahead);

SWOT analysis of the organization

Marketing analysis

Market Definition:

Market Strategies – (address positioning, pricing, distribution, promotion);

How does company conduct marketing research?

Competitive advantage of the business.

Innovation management Did the company introduce any innovative techniques/processes in the past five years? If so, evaluate the outcome. Information technology

Is the IT function taken by the company or outsourced?

How is the data managed within the company? (e.g. database of customers)

What is the key software employed? Is it customized in any way? Stakeholder analysis and communications

Identify key stakeholders of the organization. What influence do they exercise?

What methods of communication are most frequently used with stakeholders? Are those methods effective?

Organization’s future and challenges

How do you envision the future of the organization;

What unique challenges are present? Recommendations for the company’s management This section suggests a course of action based on the findings and conclusions. Content must be supported both by the data in the discussion. Conclusions The Conclusion is a final brief statement which draws together the objectives and findings of the entire internship project. References/Bibliography The sources for the data and other information used in the report should be acknowledged in this section by citing references within the text of the report using APA/MLA or Harvard referencing style. Annexure Attach all the supportive documents used in the preparation of your report such as brochures, newsletters, forms, questionnaires etc.

3.3. Step 3. Start writing your Final Reflection Report. The final reflection report (5 pages, Font style should be Times New Roman, font size 12, and line spacing 1.5;) should include the following:

Briefly state the time period of agreed employment, including the starting date and completion date, and the hours of employment per week.

Provide a description of duties assigned. This description may be for those duties performed during a typical day or the duties may be enumerated and described by job category, such as accounting, billing, sales contacts, and so forth. Indicate to what extent these duties coincide with those in your work agreement with the employer.

If training was provided, indicate the way in which training was provided, including the name and title of the supervisor/trainer. Indicate whether training occurred in a formal instructional mode or was provided on a task-by-task basis as the tasks were being performed at the work site. How effective was the training for you?

Explain in some detail how the tasks performed relate to your education at LCC. When possible, specify courses or segments of courses that were helpful in performing your duties.

Through an example or incident at work, show how your work skills and business judgment grew and improved as a result of this work assignment. Indicate whether you made any recommendations for improvement in the work environment based upon your experience and your education at LCC and whether the company accepted those recommendations.

Describe any significant differences in the practicum experience from what was originally agreed on.

Describe any significant changes you observed in the company organizational structure or climate or in employee responsibilities and relationships.

Indicate whether you have discussed this report with your employer supervisor. If so, describe his/her reaction to your report.

Include recommendations for future practicum and a clear indication as to the degree to which the practicum goals have been attained.

Use appropriate business report writing techniques. The report and assignment should be well written in quality English style, with good sentence structure and language

usage. Appropriate division headings, pagination, indexing, and

cover sheet should be used. Illustrations and tables, if used,

must be properly labelled.

IV. At the End of Your Practicum

4.1. Step 1. Finish filling in the Journal – Time Log, get signatures from the employer.

After finishing your practicum hours and filling in the Journal – Time Log, an employer has

to approve your working hours and sign for them.

4.2. Step 2. Get an Employers Evaluation. Workplace supervisor’s evaluation of the student on the job can be filled in English or Lithuanian. It is a confidential document and must come from supervisor’s email address or presented in a stamped and signed envelope to CDC.

4.3. Step 3. Finnish your papers and send all of them for grading. At the end of the practicum 5 documents will be graded:

1.) course assignment; 2.) final reflection report; 3.) journal –time log; 4.) CV; 5.) employer’s evaluation of your work. (Sent separately by the employer).

REMEMBER: All the documents have to be sent BEFORE the deadline!

4.4. Step 4. How to send the documents? All assignments, reports and evaluations have to be submitted as .doc or .pdf attachments via email to CDC Director [email protected] ONLY. CDC Director will forward them to the Instructor. Submit all documents in ONE SINGLE EMAIL: (1) course assignment; (2) final reflection report; (3) journal –time log; (4) personal CV. Documents can be archived. Put your course title NAME SURNAME in the subject line. For e.g. subject line: BUS483 Last name, Name. Do not send multiple emails with different reports and assignments! CDC Director will also send a general email with due dates to your personal email. Each day of late submission will result in 3 % of final grade reduction. Please plan your time accordingly!

Employer’s evaluation is a confidential document and has to be

submitted electronically by your supervisor, separately from other

documents you will send to [email protected]. The email domain must be corporate and personal (not from

[email protected] or [email protected]).

BUS 483 BUSINESS PRACTICUM CREDIT HOURS: 15 ECTS DMITRIJ KATKOV, MSc

I. Course Description: This course provides supervised work experience designed to apply academic concepts to actual business situations. Assignments cover various aspects of a business, including general business organization, accounting, computer usage, systems flow, and marketing. The student should find a suitable work assignment and a faculty supervisor to develop a learning plan. This plan should be approved by the student’s faculty advisor, employer and by the Business Practicum Coordinator (or Department Chairperson). Prerequisites: ACC 209, ACC 210, BUS 206, BUS 200, ECO 203, ECO 204, CIS 220,

II. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course students will:

Get practical experience within the business environment of a chosen organization.

Apply the principles and theories taught in the classroom in an actual business setting. Develop a greater understanding about career options in the chosen field.

Demonstrate knowledge of the key business concepts and issues as they apply to the employer’s business by preparing a written report.

Have an opportunity to initiate their network of professional contacts in the relevant industry.

III. Attendance Policy: The learning plan for a 15cr practicum must outline 338 clock hours of time.

I. BENDROSIOS NUOSTATOS

1. Ši sutartis sudaroma visam praktinio mokymo priimančioje organizacijoje (toliau – praktika)

laikotarpiui. 2. Studentas atlieka praktiką pagal praktikos planą (programą). Vadovaujantis praktikos planu

(programa) šioje sutartyje nurodoma: 2.1. praktikos tikslas – ugdyti studentų gebėjimus susieti paskaitų metu įgytas teorines žinias

su praktine veikla ir visa tai pritaikyti sprendžiant praktinio pobūdžio verslo problemas.; 2.2. numatomi praktikos rezultatai – žinos praktikos institucijos struktūrą, institucijos ar

atskirų jos padalinių tikslus ir funkcijas; gebės įvertinti konkretaus padalinio vietą institucijoje ar

įmonėje, ypač problemų sprendimo ir kompetencijų pasidalijimo bei įstatymų ir poįstatyminių aktų įgyvendinimo aspektais; įgys praktinio darbo institucijoje patirties; gebės teorines žinias taikyti praktiniame darbe; suvoks savarankiškos veiklos reikšmę profesiniame ir asmeniniame kontekste; gebės kritiškai vertinti savo atliktą darbą bei savo vertybines nuostatas, analizuoti įgytą profesinę patirtį; gebės tinkamai parengti praktikos ataskaitą bei kitas su praktikas susijusias užduotis.

II. ŠALIŲ ĮSIPAREIGOJIMAI 3. Aukštoji mokykla įsipareigoja: 3.1. užtikrinti studento, siunčiamo atlikti praktiką, būtiną praktikai teorinį ir praktinį pasirengimą; 3.2. skirti praktikos vadovą – aukštosios mokyklos dėstytoją, kuris studentui padeda parengti ir

tvirtina praktikos planą (programą), užtikrina praktikos tikslų pasiekimo priežiūrą ir prireikus kartu su priimančios organizacijos atsakingais darbuotojais (arba valstybės tarnautojais) operatyviai sprendžia su studento atliekama praktika iškilusias problemas;

3.3. aprūpinti priimančios organizacijos paskirtą praktikos vadovą metodinėmis vadovavimo praktikai rekomendacijomis (priemonėmis);

3.4. šios sutarties nustatytomis sąlygomis, kai tai neprieštarauja priimančios organizacijos steigimo dokumentams ir veiklos tikslams, apmokėti priimančiai organizacijai už praktikos organizavimą ir skirti šiam tikslui ___________ Lt (skiriama suma turi sudaryti ne mažiau kaip 50 procentų studijų kainos dalies, skirtos dėstytojų ir mokslo darbuotojų bei kitų su studijomis susijusių darbuotojų darbo užmokesčiui, bet ne didesnės kaip norminė studijų kaina, proporcingos praktikos apimčiai (studijų kreditų skaičiui), jei aukštoji mokykla ir priimanti organizacija nesutaria kitaip;

3.5. papildomi aukštosios mokyklos įsipareigojimai – _________________________________ . 4. Priimanti organizacija įsipareigoja: 4.1. suteikti studentui praktinio mokymo vietą _______________________________________, (praktinio mokymo vietos pavadinimas ir adresas)

sudaryti sąlygas praktikos plano (programos) įgyvendinimui, aprūpinti praktikos plano (programos) įgyvendinimui reikalinga informacija ir neatitraukti studento nuo praktinio mokymo užduočių vykdymo;

4.2. užtikrinti, kad studentui būtų paskirtas praktikos vadovas iš kvalifikuotų darbuotojų (arba valstybės tarnautojų), turinčių ne mažesnį kaip 3 metų atitinkamo darbo stažą, su kuriuo studentas detalizuoja praktikos planą (programą), kuris vykdo praktikos priežiūrą, jai pasibaigus, ją įvertina;

4.3. organizuoti būtinus darbuotojų saugos ir sveikatos bei priešgaisrinės saugos instruktažus; 4.4. vadovaudamasi(s) priimančioje organizacijoje veikiančiais nuostatais arba papildomu

susitarimu su aukštąja mokykla dėl darbo tvarkos ir sąlygų, užtikrinti studentui darbuotojų saugos ir sveikatos bei higienos normas atitinkančias darbo sąlygas, esant reikalui aprūpinti studentą praktikai atlikti būtinais darbo įrankiais, darbo drabužiais ir darbo avalyne, kitomis asmeninėmis ir kolektyvinėmis darbuotojų saugos ir sveikatos priemonėmis teisės aktuose nustatyta tvarka, jeigu sutarties šalys šioje sutartyje nesusitaria kitaip;

4.5. skirti studentui su studijų bei praktinio mokymo specifika susijusias užduotis bei užtikrinti, kad nebūtų skiriamos su studijų bei praktinio mokymo specifika nesusijusios užduotys nekvalifikuotam darbui atlikti;

4.6. atsižvelgdama į praktikos vadovo įvertinimą išduoti dokumentą apie studento atliktą praktiką;

ir veterinarinės medicinos rezidentūrą reglamentuojančių teisės aktų reikalavimais.

4.7. informuoti studentą, kuri praktikos metu suteikiama informacija yra priimančios organizacijos komercinė arba kita paslaptis, neplatinama už priimančios organizacijos ribų, bei apie už šios informacijos platinimą taikomas baudas (jei tokios yra numatytos vidaus dokumentuose);

4.8. informuoti aukštąją mokyklą apie praktikos drausmės pažeidimus, studento neatvykimą į praktiką;

4.9. papildomi priimančios organizacijos įsipareigojimai – ______________________________ 5. Priimanti organizacija turi teisę leisti studentui savarankiškai, be praktikos vadovo pagalbos,

atlikti jam pavestas funkcijas dalyvaujant gamyboje arba teikiant paslaugas, tik tais atvejais, jeigu priimanti organizacija sudaro su studentu laikinąją darbo sutartį teisės aktų nustatyta tvarka. Rezidentų praktinio mokymo atveju šis punktas gali būti netaikomas vadovaujantis medicinos, odontologijos ir veterinarinės medicinos rezidentūrą reglamentuojančių teisės aktų reikalavimais.

6. Studentas įsipareigoja: 6.1. ne vėliau kaip prieš _______dienų iki praktikos pradžios parengti praktikos planą

(programą) ir suderinti su aukštosios mokyklos paskirtu praktikos vadovu, ne vėliau kaip per pirmąją praktikos dieną detalizuoti praktikos planą (programą) su priimančios organizacijos paskirtu praktikos vadovu;

6.2. stropiai vykdyti praktinio mokymo užduotis; neatvykęs į praktiką priimančioje organizacijoje, nedelsdamas pranešti apie tai praktikos vadovui, nurodydamas priežastį, o ligos atveju – pateikdamas gydytojo pažymą;

6.3. laikytis priimančios organizacijos nuostatų (įstatų) ir darbo tvarkos taisyklių arba papildomo susitarimo su aukštąja mokykla susitarimo dėl darbo tvarkos ir sąlygų nuostatų, laikyti paslaptyje priimančios organizacijos komercines ir kitas paslaptis bei informaciją, kurią nurodo priimanti organizacija pagal šios sutarties 4.7 punktą;

6.4. tausoti priimančios organizacijos turtą, už padarytą materialinę žalą atsakyti įstatymų nustatyta tvarka;

6.5. laikytis darbuotojų saugos ir sveikatos bei priešgaisrinės apsaugos taisyklių reikalavimų; 6.6. informuoti aukštąją mokyklą, jei praktikos atlikimo laikotarpiu yra skiriamos su studijų bei

praktinio mokymo specifika nesusijusios užduotys nekvalifikuotam darbui atlikti, jei priimanti organizacija nesudaro sąlygų praktikos planui (programai) įgyvendinti;

6.7. parengti praktikos ataskaitą pagal aukštosios mokyklos nustatytus reikalavimus, pateikti ją aukštosios mokyklos paskirtam praktikos vadovui;

6.8. papildomi studento įsipareigojimai – ___________________________________________ .

III. BAIGIAMOSIOS NUOSTATOS 7. Ši sutartis gali būti pakeista tik rašytiniu visų šalių susitarimu. Sutarties pakeitimai yra

neatsiejama šios sutarties dalis. 8. Ši sutartis gali būti nutraukiama: 8.1. jei studentas pašalinamas iš aukštosios mokyklos, nutraukia studijas ar laikinai sustabdo

studijas (įskaitant studentus, kuriems suteiktos akademinės atostogos); 8.2. jei viena iš šalių pažeidžia šioje sutartyje nustatytus įsipareigojimus; 8.3. šalių susitarimu, jei tokį susitarimą sąlygoja nenumatytos, objektyvios ir motyvuotos

priežastys. 9. Sutarties šalis praneša kitoms sutarties šalims apie sutarties nutraukimą ne vėliau kaip prieš

_______ dienų. 10. Visi ginčai, kurių sutarties šalys negali išspręsti geranoriškai ir susitarus, sprendžiami

Lietuvos Respublikos teisės aktų nustatyta tvarka. 11. Ši sutartis įsigalioja nuo tos dienos, kai paskutinioji iš šalių ją pasirašo, ir galioja iki praktikos atlikimo ir visų kitų įsipareigojimų pagal šią sutartį įvykdymo.

12. Ši sutartis sudaryta trim egzemplioriais, turinčiais vienodą teisinę galią, po vieną kiekvienai sutarties šaliai.

c. communicate with Business Practicum Coordinator with regard to any questions which may arise about the student during his/her practicum;

d. provide practical support if required for e.g. check appropriate insurance cover;

e. when necessary, to inform Business Practicum Coordinator in the event of a student not showing up, beginning later or terminating the practicum prematurely;

f. to confidentially provide evaluation of student’s work at the end of the practicum.

5. Obligations of the student The student is obliged to:

a. comply with all arrangements negotiated and to make use of every opportunity to improve his/her field of

b. abide by the rules and regulations of the host organization, to observe the given working rules and company guidelines, and to manage all tools, instruments, machines and materials with due care and attention according to safety instructions its normal working hours, code of conduct and rules of confidentiality

c. communicate with the University about any problem or changes regarding the placement

d. fulfil all training requirements; compete all given assignments on time.

6. Obligations of the University The University is obliged to:

a. assign a faculty member to the students to monitor his/her academic progress and to sign the practicum contract

b. evaluate student’s performance based on the learning outcomes
