Key Findings
• Clear difference between mainly agricultural North and Central regions v South
• Construction, retail and accommodation/food services are key across Wales, the consequence of tourism and development?
• Professional and technical services plus business support and admin also well developed.
• In terms of business numbers, the South dominates
• Gwynedd profile shows predominance of tourism and agriculture in a Welsh northern county.
Question: How can other business sectors be developed in Central and Northern Wales?
Reasons for Presentation
This presentation was inspired after a visit to North Wales (see article at http://bit.ly/9FiHFS). The enjoyment of the beautiful countryside and attractions as a visitor was tempered by a business eye on the region’s economy and perceptions of local morale and attitudes. Were my perceptions of a dependence on tourism and a tough business environment correct?
The data appears to support my perception. I believe this region needs active support to ensure people stay; that additional businesses are successfully established and survive here; Possible areas are for example in business support and professional services where there is an existing base.
I am an Alumnus of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth who came to appreciate the country during my 6 years there in the 70’s and 80’s.
I Currently run a small business in Cambridgeshire and active in the business network community.
