Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners, Next weekend we will welcome to the Parish a visiting missionary priest from the country of Tanzania in East Africa. His name is Fr. Gosbert Mgina and he comes to us under the auspices of the Mission Appeal Program of the Archdiocese, and will speak of the work of the Church in his area and the special project that he is raising funds for, the building of a medical dispensary in his parish, which will serve several villages in the surrounding area. There are “special” donation envelopes available to support this worthy mission, and all gifts will be receipted through the parish with tax receipts issued in due course. Thank you for your support. Fr. Gosbert will be staying in the rectory guest room and will have a chance to visit our school and also meet some of you at the weekday morning Masses while he’s here. Fr. Gosbert will be speaking at the Saturday 4PM Mass at Star of the Sea and the Sunday 9AM, 11AM and 7PM Masses at Good Shepherd. And with regard to our picnic this afternoon, just in case we have a rainy afternoon with a soggy field, our plan B is to gather in the gym and the entrance area of the church and under any walk area we can find in order to enjoy our bbq chicken without being rained on! Let’s pray for a dry day and joyful spirits. Have a good week,

1st Reading: Isaiah 50:4–9 Responsorial: Psalm 116:1–6, 8-9 2nd Reading: James 2:14-18 Gospel: Mark 8:27-35

POPE FRANCIS ~ ANGELUS at Saint Peter's Square

13 September 2015 w2.vatican.va

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Today’s Gospel presents us Jesus who, on his way towards Caesarea Philippi, asks the disciples: “Who do men say that I am?” (Mark 8:27). They respond with what the people are saying: some believe he is John the Baptist reborn, others Elijah or one of the great Prophets. The people appreciated Jesus, they considered him “God’s emissary”, but still were unable to recognize him as the foretold Messiah, awaited by all. Jesus looks at the Apostles and asks again: “But who do you say that I am?” (v. 29) This is the most important question, which Jesus directly addresses to those who have followed him, to verify their faith. Jesus asks this of YOU and I today: “But who do YOU say that I am?” It is Peter who exclaims candidly: “You are the Christ” (v. 29). Jesus is struck by Peter’s faith, and recognizes that it is a special grace of God the Father. Then he openly reveals to the disciples what awaits him in Jerusalem: “the Son of man must suffer many things... be killed, and after three days rise again” (v. 31). On hearing this, Peter, who had just professed his faith in Jesus as Messiah, takes the Master aside and rebukes him. Jesus in turn rebukes Peter, with these very harsh words: “Get behind me, Satan!” Why? Because: “..you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” (v. 33). Jesus sees in Peter — and in each one of us — that temptation by the Evil One that opposes the grace of the Father; the temptation to think only of the temporal, of our own interests, how it would benefit ourselves. But the ministry of Jesus is opposite of that. And for this reason, turning toward the whole crowd there, He says “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (v. 34) To undertake the discipleship of Jesus means to take up your cross — we all have one — to accompany him on his path, an uncomfortable path that is not of worldly success or of personal glory, but one which takes us to true freedom, to that which frees us from selfishness and sin. It is necessary to clearly reject that worldly mentality which places one’s “I” and one’s own interests at the centre of existence. That is not what Jesus wants from us! Instead Jesus invites us to lose our life for him and for the Gospel. Because this is the path that leads us to the resurrection. This is the path we were created for, that leads to the fullness of joy and a peace that surpasses all understanding ~ to the full and definitive life with God!

Mission Appeal - 9AM, 11AM & 7PM Mass at GS

Fr. Gosbert Mgina will be visiting our parish on the weekend of September 22 & 23 to speak on behalf of Madege Parish in Diocese of Iringa in Tanzania.

Fr. Mgina wrote: “Madege Parish is in the Diocese

of Iringa, Tanzania (…). The Parish is situated 80

kilometers south east of Iringa town (…). The

parish was started by the Consolata missionaries

in the year of 1996, The number of the baptized up

to the moment is 5,012. There are 14 outstations,

of which 10 are relatively small ones. Magede is

characterized with mountainous landscape known

as Udzungwa mountain ranges. Unfortunately the

soil is not good for cash crops. Hence the people

are poor peasant farmers growing only subsistence

crops like maize, beans, millet, pine trees, etc. for

hand to mouth survival. Poor and dangerous roads

especially during rainy seasons cripple the

economy. Hence no way to transport and sell their

little harvest. Madege Parish face problems, the

critical one is the access to Medical Treatment.

Here at the parish, we have a dispensary which

help these people. However, many have to walk up

to 12 kilometers to reach here. It is something

difficult especially for women who must attend

‘mother and child’ health services. We would like

to construct another dispensary in the nearby

village called Ilutila. The dispensary will serve

several villages, for it will bring health services

more close to them. They will have a short

distance to reach the service.”

Thank you for your generosity and prayers. Mission Appeal envelopes are available starting this weekend.

WHAT IS LIFE CHAIN? Life Chain is a prayerful and peaceful

witness to the sanctity of human life

and the harm of abortion. Every year,

Life Chain participants hold signs with

messages such as “Life: the first

inalienable right” and “Abortion kills

children” at hundreds of locations

across North America for one hour. It

is a simple but powerful reminder of

our duty to defend the weakest

members of our society.

THE PRO-LIFE VIEW Pro-lifers believe that human life is

i n t r i n s i c a l l y v a l u a b l e i n a l l

circumstances and at all stages. Every

human being, regardless of age or

ability, deserves human rights, the

most fundamental of which is the right

of life. Science proves that life begins

at fertilization. When a woman faces

an unplanned pregnancy, the solution

is not to kill the innocent child. We as

a society, can do better than abortion.

DID YOU KNOW? Canada is the only Western country

with no law on abortion.

Approximately 300 abortions

happen every day in Canada - over

100,000 every year

Since 1969, there have been over 4

million abortions in Canada
