4-H Member and Leader Recognition: Sunday, July 22 dur ing the Subsidy Auction, livestock arena. Honoring 1, 3, 6, 9 & 11 year 4-H members. 4-H leaders will be recognized for 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, & 35 years of service.

Fairgrounds Clean-Up Event Center set-up: Thursday, July 12, 7 pm!

Fairgrounds clean-up day, Saturday, July 14 at the Butler County Fairgrounds. Cleaning will begin at 9 a.m. All 4-H’ers are encouraged to help prepare the fairgrounds and buildings for the 2018 Butler County Fair.

Help is needed to clean the grandstand, exhibit buildings and livestock buildings. Bring your brooms, buckets, shovels, etc. The more help we have, the faster the clean up! When the work is done, IT’S PIZZA TIME, courtesy of Butler County Ag Society.

4-H Flag Raising Ceremony A special flag raising ceremony will take place at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 19, just prior to the goat/sheep show. The flag lowering ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, immediately following the 4-H Awards Presentation and Livestock Subsidy Auction.

Each club should provide a representative to participate in both ceremonies. Each individual will read a short paragraph, which we will provide for them.

4-H/FFA Swine Exhibitors must complete the Tyson affidavit and bring it to check in at the fairgrounds on July 19. Download the forms: http://butler.unl.edu/butlercounty4h.

Clover Kid Showmanship: All livestock for Clover Kid Showmanship will be checked in with the 4-H animals at the designated times in the fair schedule. The exception is beef, with bucket calf and feeder calves brought in the day of show. Call with questions.

Substitute showmen in the livestock ring: If a substitute showman is needed for any of the livestock events, the showman must be enrolled in Butler County 4-H or FFA.

4-H Poultry Exhibitors will bring their own feed and water containers.

Sewing/Clothing & Fashion Show Entries

June 15 – Pre-entry Exhibit for Clothing Exhibits, Style Revue Exhibits, Attention Shoppers/Shopping in Style Exhibits due to extension office. List clothing/sewing items and fashion revue participation on “general” entry form with other exhibit items for county fair.

July 17 & 18 –Clothing/Sewing items to be checked in at the fairgrounds with interview

judging and modeling on Wednesday only, at the fairgrounds.

Please bring the following with you: Your clothing items – clothing labels must be safety pinned or sewn to each exhibit. These are

available at the Extension Office. Entry tags will be printed for you and available at check in.

Clear bags will be provided.

Accessories, shoes, etc. – whatever you plan to wear when you model.

Modeling narrations

Interview Judging –will be limited to 3 items per 4-H’er. Parents are not allowed to be present when youth are interview judging.

Fashion Show Judging: Modeling times will be assigned at check in. Limit of 3 items per 4-H member.

Shopping in Style Modeling Judging-If you are modeling your Shopping in Style item a specific modeling form is needed. This form counts towards 50% of your Fashion Show scoring. Form are available on-line (http://extension.unl.edu/statewide/butler/4h) or at the Butler County Extension Office.

Public Style Show (Held during Butler County Fair) – Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the

Butler County Event Center at the fairgrounds. Each 4-H’er will model their entries (up to 2 items) for the public and ribbons and special awards will be presented. Please be dressed and ready to go by 5:45 p.m. on this date. Participation in the Fashion Show includes BOTH modeling for a judge at Entry Day and participation in the public show at county fair. Modeling Narration-As you model your outfit, a two or three minute narration will be read. Write a description of you and your outfit, remembering to use your name, not “I” or “My”. Special points of interest you might use in your narration:

1. Special features that you like about your outfit.

2. Where you plan to wear your outfit.

3. Sewing techniques you learned in making your outfit.

4. Accessories you are wearing.

5. Consumer information such as price, fabric content or how the outfit saved you money.

6. Describe the way the outfit looks on you, or the way you feel when wearing the outfit.

4-H Culinary Challenge Contest

Purpose of the contest: The 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest will require youth to demonstrate healthy decision making through nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, and food safety, utilizing foods and nutrition curriculum. They will apply healthy living knowledge and skills by planning a nutritious menu, demonstrating their understanding of time management skills in the kitchen, and expressing their originality and creativity through an appropriate themed and properly set table. To showcase these skills, youth will create a menu, prepare one food item, and choose an appropriate theme for their occasion while expressing their food, nutrition, and food safety knowledge during a live interview with a judge at the contest. In order to highlight knowledge and skills acquired during pre-contest preparation, youth will utilize technology as part of their interview. Challenge Ingredient/Item: The 2018 challenge ingredient is beef.Each 4-Her must incorporate the challenge ingredient into their food item they will be presenting during the contest. This may require altering a recipe or creatively incorporating an item into their overall table theme. The challenge ingredient must also be included in the interview presentation, demonstrating youth knowledge of the ingredient, such as nutritional value, a farm-to-fork concept, or how to adapt a recipe to include the ingredient. Judges Interview: The 4-Her should view themselves as the host, welcoming the judge, cooperatively presenting the table to the judge, incorporating multi-media resources, and answering any questions from the judge. Be prepared to present to the judge utilizing technology. (PowerPoint, picture story, or other multi-media resource. Presentations may include photos, clip art, animation, video or audio sound.) The 4-H members should cooperatively present a verbal presentation to the judge that is highlighted by their multi-media presentation via computer or iPad. Participants must provide their own computer or other equipment needed for their 4-H Foods Event judging interview. Presentations will occur at participants’ tables. Please do not bring projectors or other equipment which will require extra space. Considerations should be given to creatively include the following items through the multi-media presentation:

nutritional facts of their menu

food safety

time management

choice of menu

food preparation

cost of item/per serving

food handling techniques

recipe of the food item shared with the judge
