Bully Prevention:

3 Step Response:

Step 1: STOP

•When students experience a problem behavior or they see another student experiencing a problem behavior, they will put their hand up in a “stop signal” and they will say, “Stop”

Examples when to use Stop response:•Johnny pokes Sally in the back over and over while in line.

•Susie teases Sally and calls her a bad name. •Joey tackles Sam while playing two-hand touch football .

•Sam steals the ball away from Fred when they are not playing a game that involves stealing.

Examples when Not to use Stop response:

•Johnny accidentally breaks the double-dribble rule in basketball .

• Kelly makes a suggestion for a game that Fred does not like .

• Sam steals the ball away from Fred when they are playing basketball: a game where stealing is appropriate .

• Sally continues to poke Susie in line, even after Susie has delivered the stop signal.

If students are asked to “Stop” they should:1. Stop what they are doing.2. Take a deep breath and count to 3. 3. Go on with your day.

Step 2: WALK AWAYWhen students have tried “stop” and the problem behavior continues, they will“Walk Away” from the problem behavior. By walking away you remove yourselfFrom the problem behavior.

Step 3: TALKStudents should “Talk” to an adult when they have tried the “Stop signal” and“Walk Away” but the problem behavior continues.

Talking" is when you have tried to solve the problem yourself, and have used the "stop" and "walk" steps first:

Did you request "stop"? Did you "walk away"?

Tattling is when you do not use the "stop" and "walk away" steps before "talking" to an adult. Tattling is when your goal is to get the other person in trouble .

TALKING VS TATTLING

Adults will respond to students like this:1. Adult will ask what the problem is.2. Adult will ask the student if they said “stop”.3. Adults will ask the student if they “walked away” calmly.

Breaking the Silence*Research has shown that students are reluctant to tell adults about bullying.

*BCMS school data shows that when STOP –WALK- TALK program is used bullying will stop. However, school staff have found that the key part is communication of students with adults and this might require continued communication in some cases. Follow up with an adult is also a good strategy to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Will Bullying necessarily stop if you tell an adult one or two times?

NO. Communication might mean telling an adult beyond two times. However, if this is the same person, the school resource officer will get involved under House Bill 91 and charges will be considered even after the second time and some times the first time depending on the circumstances of the bullying. The school resource office will determine when charges will be filed based on the evidence. Mr. Freeman keeps detailed records of the events that go on at school. We will make sure that bullying stops but CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH must talk to an adult (EVEN IF MULTIPLY TIMES) and let us help you with the situation.

Taking a Stand

1. Is Empathy enough for this to be a Bully-Free School?2. If we all had empathy for each other is that all it would take?

Discussion:

*Positive Action is necessary in a Bully-Free School. Empathy helps you to know how and when to act to help someone, but it is not enough on its own.

Why don’t people take a stand?

1. Retaliation: We will do our best to keep any retaliation from happening.a) Administrators will deal seriously with any forms of retaliation. b) In reality, retaliation doesn’t often happen. It is what people threaten when pushed into a corner. c) Administrators work to keep names anonymous unless not possible.

“When you have the courage to take a stand you become part of the caring majority instead of being a silent member of the school. Whenyou are silent, the bullies or people doing hurtful, negative things gainmore power. Remember, there is strength in numbers and you aren’t alone. If you think something isn’t right, someone next to you is probably feeling the same way. This is your school too. These are your fellow classmates. We are challenging you to be a member of thecaring majority – not a silent member who stands back when they seenegative, hurtful things happening. We are challenging you to stand up for each other, whether the person being bullied is your best friend or someone you hardly know.”
