Bu#erflies and moths dance from one flower to another in our gardens, drinking nectar with their long slender proboscis. A bit of pollen s<cks to the proboscis and is transferred to the female part of another flower. Bu#erflies are day<me visitors; they see colors well, but they have a poor sense of smell. Moths appear at twilight and at night; they’re a#racted to white and cream-colored flowers with a strong odor – some<mes fragrant and some<mes not! Bu#erflies like flowers that offer a landing pad that provides room for their wings as they stop to sip the nectar. Moths don’t need this pedestal, as they don’t linger long enough. Bu#erflies and moths also need plants that provide a place to lay their eggs and feed their larvae once they hatch. Some species are host-specific – they can only survive if their host plant is available. Some plant species offer special protec<on to larval caterpillars. The leaves that they feed on contain a chemical that is poisonous to predators, protec<ng the caterpillars from hungry birds. Other bu#erfly species have evolved to mimic the appearance of these protected bu#erflies; they stay safe from the predators, too. Butterflies and Moths Our Garden Dancers! Bu#erflies and moths like to sip water from mud puddles, consuming important salts and minerals from the soil. You can a#ract them to your garden by providing a puddling sta<on. Favorite plants of our local bu#erflies include na<ves, such as buckwheat, coyote mint, milkweed, hummingbird sage, yarrow, lavatera, ceanothus, lupine, manzanita, and California buckeye. Other favorites include lantana, pincushion flower, coneflower species, aster species, pineapple guava, and bu#erfly bush. Moths are a#racted to white varie<es of bu#erfly bush and salvia, as well as na<ve manzanitas, honeysuckle and evening primrose. Choose the white varie<es of annual nico<ana, impa<ens and petunia to bring moths to your night garden. Moth larvae will benefit from na<ve snowberry and California fuchsia.
