Greetings, fellow Members! Fall has arrived, and you know what that means. Pumpkin spice domination is everywhere. We don’t typically jump on every bandwagon that comes along, but we thought adding a scratch and sniff pumpkin spice

feature to the One Nevada mobile app would be interesting. We’re still beta testing that little feature so in this issue, we decided to give you the next best thing . . . a full run-down of how technology has transformed and helped us spice up our lives. From transportation to reading to TV watching and even banking, technology offers us more ways than ever to stay connected and save time, money and hassle. With today’s smart phones, you can access and manage your money from wherever you are. We believe we offer one of the best mobile apps in the market today. In the last few months, we decided to test that belief. See page 5-6 for the results and explore all that you can do with the One Nevada mobile app. On a sad note, in this issue we also honor the memory of Major General Billy G. McCoy, USAF, Ret., who passed away on August 23. Along with his distinguished military career, General McCoy also served on the One Nevada Board of Directors from 1994 until his passing. With heavy yet grateful hearts, we at One Nevada honor his sacrifice and service to our country, our community and our credit union.

Best regards,

Paul Parrish, President/CEO

or generations, we’ve fanaticized about flying cars, teleporters and wild technologies that would give us unlimited free time. That future has not happened. Yet. But the technology we do have isn’t just giving us more free time, it’s also changing the way we interact with the world around us.

HOW WE FIND ANSWERSAlready, Google and other search engines save us time by answering every question we have in a split second. Decades ago, if we had a question, we went to the local library and scoured through reference books and other materials until we found it. Or we asked someone really smart and hoped they were correct.

HOW WE TRAVELTravel sites and apps are changing the way we get around. Whether we’re taking a bus, airplane, boat or car, or staying at a hotel or resort, technology is part of the process. Shopping platforms and apps such as Priceline help us find the lowest fares and costs possible. Need more proof? Car rental companies have recently reported less earnings in part, due to rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft.

HOW WE COMMUNICATEEmail and text messages are popular, for sure. But social media and other smartphone apps have made it even easier to communicate with other people around the globe. That includes dating

Today’s Technologyand our Time-saving Future.

and sharing restaurant reviews. We can even get real-time driving conditions with apps like Waze.

HOW WE SHARESocial media isn’t just about communicating with one person at a time, it’s also about communicating with your entire family and long list of friends with a single click or tap. Just upload your latest vacation photos and you’ll get instant feedback on the experience. This has probably been one of the greatest advents when it comes to parents of young children sharing photos and videos with friends and family who might live thousands of miles away.

HOW WE WATCH TELEVISIONIt might seem contradictory, but average adult television viewership is down slightly at five hours and four minutes per day. Researchers say the reduction is due to additional choices, including streaming and commercial free options. Recent reports show that 50% of Americans have a streaming subscription service such as Netflix or Hulu. The time Americans spend watching content on tablets has increased dramatically over the past few years.

HOW WE READStudies show that just over 70% of American adults read at least one book per year. On average, a person will read 12 books in a year. While those numbers are down from past decades, e-readers and tablets have made it possible to take whole bookstores with us on vacation or on the bus. Plus, it has become the preferred way to digest news and other media.

HOW WE SHOPIn-store shopping used to be the thing. It was an American pastime, more or less. Now, Amazon and other online retailers have made it possible to compare prices with several retailers simultaneously and get it delivered faster than ever. Experts predict that online shopping will continue to grow. In addition, near-field communication (NFC) payments are also growing. If you have a smartphone, options such as Apple Pay and Google Pay make it possible to use your smartphone to conduct credit or debit card transactions at the register.

HOW WE BANKTechnology has completely changed how we manage our money. At One Nevada, we continue to bring you the latest in digital banking options, so you can bank wherever you are. To change the way you bank, just download the One Nevada Mobile App and log in to Online Banking. It will save you time by allowing you to deposit checks, pay bills, transfer money, check your balances and find an ATM all from your phone. We’ve also packed it with money-saving tools that allow you to redeem debit card rewards at local retailers, as well as check your credit score and monitor your credit anytime you like.

through January 2007. The General also served as trustee of the community College of Southern Nevada and was an active member of the Nellis Support Team. The General was a member of the credit union since 1989 and joined the Board of Directors in 1994. He served the Board for 24 years and in that time, he was chairman four times. He will be sorely missed by his fellow board members and family at One Nevada as well as family, friends and all those he touched. May he rest in peace.

Yesterday’s sci-fi is today’s reality. ack in the 1980s, a series of movies called Back to the Future was all the rage. Part two of that trilogy was especially known for its predictions of the future – specifically 2015. Here’s a quick list of the items the filmmakers got right and how those inventions may have gotten their inspiration from a movie about the time-traveling adventures of Marty McFly. TABLETS: In the film, Marty is asked to sign a petition to save the clock tower. The person soliciting funds is carrying a tablet computer and even asks Marty to sign his name and make a donation using the tablet. Sure, it’s a bit clumsier than the models we have today, but the idea is still the same. Today’s tablet computers have taken some of the basic features of a laptop and put them into a more user-friendly device.

DRONES: There are drones everywhere in the movie, including drones that take pictures and video clips for the news. In one scene, police are hauling away one of the movie’s bad guys while much of the media film the event via drone cameras. Today, we use drones for television shows and movies, as well as police and military maneuvers. Additionally, amateur pilots have adopted drones for their home movies as well as other commercial enterprises.

DIGITAL CAMERAS AND VIEWING DEVICES: Back when the movie was made, digital cameras were far-flung sci-fi. But with today’s smartphones, digital photography has become commonplace. In the film, Doc Brown uses a camera-like device. Although he puts the device up to his face, like a non-digital camera, the idea of digital photography did become reality, just as the movie predicted.

ELECTRONIC PAYMENT SYSTEMS: In the film, several instances of electronic payments can be found. These have become a reality with the advent of Apple Pay , Google Pay and even our One2Pay®.

VIDEO PHONES: While the versions of a video phone in the movie are much larger and seem to integrate televisions with video conference calls, today’s smartphones make face-to-face calling quick, easy and very futuristic. Unlike the movie, it’s not easy to hack into another person’s video call.

WEARABLE VIRTUAL REALITY: In Back to the Future Part 2, the scene around the dinner table shows one of the kids wearing what appears to be a virtual reality headset. Surprisingly, this is pretty close to what we have today. Using a smartphone or video game console integration, anyone can utilize virtual reality to watch movies, play games or get a virtual view of a home, office space or shopping area. Even today’s hardware looks similar to what appeared in the film.

SMART SPEAKERS/VOICE ASSISTANTS: Voice-activated appliances such as the Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri have become commonplace in American households. In the movie, Marty McFly makes an order at an 80’s style restaurant with his voice and the assistance of a virtual President Reagan. Who wouldn’t want to talk to a past president when getting directions or making a shopping list?

e’re all spending more time in front of screens. It’s just a part of modern life, from our smartphones to our work computers, home televisions and tablets. But what about our kids and grandkids? According to research conducted by the nonprofit, Common Sense Media, kids 8 and under are staring at screens for 2 hours and 19 minutes per day. The same study found that those ages 8 to 12 are on devices 4 hours and 36 minutes per day. While the American Academy of Pediatrics urges parents to limit usage overall, for those times when it’s unavoidable, why not use their screen time to teach them about money and finances? Here are a few of the best financial education apps out there for both Apple and Android devices.

RENEGADE BUGGIES — AGES 6 & UPFrom the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL), this fun and visually stunning app teaches kids how to save money while shopping – a good skill to

learn. Players shop online with virtual money, learning how to compare unit sizes, why buying in bulk is sometimes good and the importance of comparing prices.

COST — FREE

PIGGYBOT — AGES 7 & UPThis is the same board game you grew up with, but with a modern twist. Kids still learn about money, insurance, investing and how to make smart financial decisions.

COST — IT’S NOT FREE. IMPORTANT: in-game transactions are available, so be sure to turn “off” in-game purchases (or set a password) before allowing little ones to play by themselves.

SAVINGS SPREE — AGES 7 & UPThis game teaches kids about earning money, how to spend it wisely and how to save. There is an emphasis on short- and long-term savings, why it’s important to give to charity and when it’s smart to invest.

COST — THIS ONE ISN’T FREE, but the 5-star rating says a lot about the value of this app.

BANZAI FOR EDUCATION This isn’t an app, but a premium online financial literacy program being offered at schools throughout our community. These notes were never issued for public circulation. When the Government stopped using them in the early 1960s, most were destroyed. Only a few are known to have survived. They are housed at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the Smithsonian Institute. It’s illegal for a private person to own one of these notes, and none has ever been in private hands. All 42,000 are accounted for. Source: nutmegcollector.blogspot.com
