Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is a not-for-profit cultural

organization committed to inspiring expression, creativity and

innovation through the arts. Located at the site of the 1969

Woodstock Music and Art Fair in Bethel, NY, just 90 minutes

from New York City on 800 acres of manicured grounds, the

Center offers multiple stages featuring diverse performances,

an award-winning museum, and educational, community,

and museum programs that provide meaningful experiences

in the arts, history and civic engagement.

Eight years later, the impact of this cultural gem extends well beyond the

perceived boundaries of “The Garden.” Known for its unique musical and

cultural legacy, the fertile ground now provides for the growth of multiple

programs and initiatives.

We are embarking on a strategic planning process while growing

collaborative partnerships with local and national non-profits who share

our values and purpose of bringing residents and artists together to create

vibrant and thriving communities.

Many already support our efforts to become a powerful arts-based model

for economic development. There is, however, much more to do on

our quest to provide young people and families with affordable cultural

resources that both inspire and enrich.

Our belief in life-long learning and

exploration drives our efforts to reach

school groups, youth and families.

Educational and Community Outreach

programs open minds, invite conversation,

excite interest and encourage individuals to

contribute positively to the development of a

vibrant community, region and world.

In 2012 we introduced several new performing

arts initiatives for children and young adults.

Last year saw the growth of many education

and Community Programs for our region’s

youth and their families. More than 35,000

people benefitted from performances,

workshops and programs.

Bethel Woods launched the youth opera

experience (YOE) in partnership with the

Delaware Valley Opera and Executive Director,

Carol Castel. This one week program guided

children in the production of an original opera

under the guidance of regional operatic

composer Evan Mack who donated his time and

talents to guide the children in the creation of

an original song.

Due to its outstanding success, in 2013 an

expanded Summer Stages program will

providen three, two-week long workshops in

musical traditions, theater, Opera, writing and

the visual arts.

“The program fosters innovation and

self-expression,” according to Margaret Hughes,

Director of Education and Community Outreach.

Nine-year-old Youth Opera Experience

participant, Charles Simon learned all the

facets of live production, including the creation

of posters, costumes and scenery for stage

sets. It is a significant opportunity for creative

expression that’s increasingly unavailable in school.

After seeing the performance, Charles’

seven-year-old brother, Henry declared his

determination to participate in 2013.

The Conservatory at Bethel Woods is a new multi-purpose learning and rehearsal space. Renovations to the 5,800 square foot structure transformed it from a residence into an accessible, arts education and community program facility. The arts education center provides panoramic views of the Bethel Woods site and includes areas for music practice, classrooms, a costume shop, scenic design, as well as a dining area.

Young people today face many challenges

and can often feel lost or isolated as a result.

Artistic expression helps them adjust, providing

an outlet for exploring and expanding beyond

their everyday constraints.

Through Saturdays at the Woods

(SAW), young people in grades K through 9

participate in an interactive experience that

unleashes their imagination and celebrates

self-expression. In 2012, 180 youth enjoyed

workshops on acting, costuming, writing,

dance and more.

The program supports Bethel Woods’ mission

to inspire expression, creativity and

innovation through the arts, giving young

people the opportunity to expand their

horizons, explore new worlds and find their

voice. Scholarship and transportation grants

help to increase accessibility to the arts for our

regional youth.

Nine-year-old Abigail Fuller participated in the YOE

and SAW in 2012 and still beams at the mention

of Bethel Woods.

“Bethel Woods was perfect, as I imagined it would be,” enthuses Abigail.

“It was very exciting and just what I like to do. I write plays and songs and

design a lot of my own clothes. And I really love to act. At Bethel Woods,

we got to do all of these things.”

“It opened her to a whole new world,” adds Abigail’s

mother, Victoria. “In school, there’s not enough

focus on music and the arts. She’s been waiting

for this kind of opportunity all her life.”

By participating in the programs, Abigail

met others with similar interests and as a

result, feels more confident about who she is.

“When I play with my friends at

recess and ask them to do a play or

something creative with me, they

only want to talk and hang out. At

school, I might be the nerdy girl, but

at Bethel Woods, I can be the star of

the show!”

eMPoWering OUR YOUTH

MAKING THE ARTS

aCCeSSible

In 2012, we made significant strides in

bringing students to Bethel Woods and in taking

our resources into the classroom.

Fifth grade teacher Joe Prestiani,

of Kenneth L. Rutherford

students have had on

their field trips here to

see events in our World

Stage Series. These

performances promote

an appreciation for all

cultures and traditions

through music, dance

and other performing arts.

The goal of the series is to

empower young people to be

positive, engaged members of their

communities by encourages self-respect

as well as exploring diversity.

“They enjoyed an opera by the Manhattan

School of Music students, with performers

from South Korea, Japan, France and more,”

explains Joe. “It really broadens their horizons.”

Supplemental materials provide students with

a comprehensive understanding of the subject

matter, and weekend concerts geared towards

families are accompanied by a workshop to

reinforce the cultural and musical concepts

within each performance.

“Many students come from struggling families.

Bethel Woods has reached out to them by

providing free transportation, lunch and a

potentially life-altering experience,” says Joe,

who is planning a field trip to our Museum

to explore the cultural, musical and political

history of the 1960s. “We’re looking forward

to a great relationship with Bethel Woods for

years to come.”

Another school benefitting from such outreach

is Chase Elementary School. More than 220

students attended a World Stage performance

and visited our Museum. All were provided

transportation free of charge. For principal Bill

Frandino, that’s what it takes. “Bethel Woods

makes it particularly easy for me to arrange for

our students to make the trips.”

Bill says teachers make connections between

what the students learn at the Museum and

what they are studying in the classroom.

Teachers have also borrowed our traveling

trunks for classroom use. These suitcases

filled with touchable objects, lesson plans

and supplemental information allow them to

incorporate new tools that are linked to the

students’ experience on site.

A new grant from TD Charitable Foundation

will help launch bethel Woods in the

Classroom, a two-track program designed

to engage and educate students by bringing

innovative teaching methods and original

curriculum to local schools, led by Bethel

Woods educators.Through generous support from Guardian Angel Motorsports, free transportation and program admission was provided to Sullivan County, NY public school students. Such funding enabled 1,200 youth to experience meaningful cultural and educational programs in 2012. Discounted transportation is also available for students from surrounding counties through the support of Rolling V Bus Corporation.

The 1969 Woodstock festival inspired a

generation of Americans. Today, the

influence of the music, history and ideals of

an iconic decade continue to shine brightly

through the award-winning Museum at Bethel

Woods — which celebrated its fifth anniversary

in June 2013.

Understanding the 1960s as a pivotal decade for

progress in social change, human fellowship and

civic engagement is critical to furthering positive

change. The Museum’s immersive, multi-media

experience makes the historical relevance of

the ’60s and Woodstock accessible to new and

future generations.

Thousands of regional families and students,

as well as the general public, shared in the

Museum’s lively and interactive approach to

history through its year-round programming

including family days, films, Speaker

Series, Special exhibitions, group

tours, travelling trunks, and Workshops

for educators.

PaSt MeetS future: The Museum at Bethel Woods

Rolling Stone photographer Baron Wolman’s candid images of Woodstock attendees and behind-the-scenes action gave the world a glimpse into the legendary arts and music festival. Wolman’s “On Assignment: Woodstock” exhibit opened the museum’s fifth season. One hundred of Wolman’s iconic images became part of our permanent collection in 2012.

Museum Director Wade Lawrence curates the Museum’s exhibits and

collections of artwork and memorabilia. “Many significant people of the

era are looking to Bethel Woods to contribute their artifacts,” he says.

“This is because we value it and make it accessible.”

exhibit showcased the work of

1969 Woodstock festival poster

artists arnold Skolnick and

david edward byrd. The

two had never met prior to the

weekend-long Rock Art Poster Fair

where they engaged in a public

interview with Stephanie Plunkett

of the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Our Museum also presented across the great divide:

Photographs by roberta Price. This photographic diary of Price’s

seven years as a resident of Libre, a commune in the Huerfano Valley

in southern Colorado, explored the back-to-the-land movement of the

late 1960s and ’70s.

Evocative speakers, films and other events are designed to

complement the Museum’s permanent and special exhibitions by

presenting leading authorities. They all provide insight into the

groundbreaking decade that shaped a generation.

Local critical acclaim for the trio of 2012 spring and fall chamber series

at the Event Gallery led directly to 2013’s Sundays with friends

— curated by Ms. Moon, Associate Principal Cello of the New York

Philharmonic — featuring five recital and small ensemble performances

by world-renowned classical musicians.

We continued to deepen our community

collaboration by presenting outstanding

performances in partnership with the

Shandelee Music festival and

the bradstan Cabaret Series, both

excellent examples of our shared

commitment to offering high-quality,

diverse programs to local communities.

At Bethel Woods, we provide artistic and

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts has renewed our rural region with

hundreds of much-needed jobs and millions of tourism dollars that

support so many of the small local businesses in our community.

But proceeds from tickets sales only cover a small portion of our operating

costs. Everyone can play a role in assuring that this tremendous cultural

resource remains accessible to families, students and people of all ages.

Your support and financial assistance as a member, volunteer, ambassador,

donor, or sponsor will help to deepen the transformative power of the arts

in Sullivan County, NY.

As our 2012 financial results indicate, 43% of our operating budget is provided by individual,

corporate and foundation support; of which $3.6 million is derived from the continued generosity
