Bullying & College Undergraduates

Bullying is the use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, usually to force that someone into doing what it is the bully wants.

With our anti-bullying video, we wanted to demonstrate that bullying can take place in a college setting.

We also wanted to use our video to help students who are being bullied to recognize it as bullying, and to speak out against it.

Bullying & College Undergraduates

In a light hearted manner, we wanted to show that bullying can take place on a college campus. In this instance it was two roommates who experienced bullying.

The two college roommates engaged in verbal bullying, cyber bullying, and physical bullying.

In a more serious manner, we wanted to let students who are being bullied know that they are not alone in it. We wanted to encourage them to talk to someone they trust about the situation. We also wanted administrative and residence life professionals to be aware that promoting an accepting environment will make students more likely to speak out against bullying.

Bullying & College Undergraduates

Research done by the University of Buffalo revealed that 18.5% of college undergraduates report being bullied at least once or twice and 22% report having been cyber bullied.

Being bullied can lead to serious negative effects such as, low self-esteem, depression, and low academic achievement.

To help prevent bullying, research suggests promoting an accepting environment. Also, to encourage students to talk to someone they trust about their bullying experience.

Importance in Residence Life: Student affairs divisions have CAS standards which

they follow closely. The following are standards of Residence Life divisions which are essential in the case against bullying:▪ Interpersonal Competence ▪ Meaningful relationships, interdependence, collaboration, and effective

leadership

▪ Humanitarianism and Civic Engagement ▪ Understanding and appreciation of cultural and human differences,

social responsibility, global perspective, and sense of civic responsibility

Residence Life strives to develop these qualities in students, all of which are undermined by the presence of bullying
