Winter has arrived in Australia! When placed on a teaching wheel the season of winter sits in the west, alongside the mineral world (the holders and transformers of energy), and the physical aspect of the human world which includes our interaction with health, finances and structures. The warrior’s attributes of the west, power and strength are qualities that can be utilised from this direction for taking responsibility for giving birth to ideas, actualising what we choose to manifest and being open to change and movement. Sweet Medicine is taking this seasonal time to consolidate all the behind the scenes structures - from the websites, to processes around registrations and organisational elements. This phase marks a time of introspection and reflection on what’s working and what’s not and mapping out the what next ready for its emergence into our 2014/2015 year. Through this introspective time our focus, restructuring and consolidating will provide the power and strength for the future ease of expansion of our community. News from Red Lodge OZ!

By Bronwyn Buckley Red Lodge Australia has entered its 4th year of operation, with over 45 students engaged in the program. In 2014, the Red Lodge leadership structure evolved from a single sponsor into a pentagram with a leadership team apex. Each member of the apex focuses on a different part of the Red Lodge program and Sweet Medicine community, from budgetary and financial matters, to overseeing the teaching program and its components, to media, marketing and community events. Captains of each study year level help with logistical and teacher support. This structure is underpinned by many apprentices offering maku in promotions, event organisation, provision of logistical support, and sweat lodge care. Having more people involved makes for a vibrant ongoing long house program and builds knowledge and capacity within the community. Red

JUNE 2014 ISSUE 3 WINTER EDITION

Lodge Australia greatly appreciates Janneke Koole, Razel Wolf and Kristin Viken’s role in mentoring and advocating this venture. It is indeed a positive group of individuals sharing their shining, growing and working together to form a strong, vibrant and enthusiastic Sweet Medicine community here in Australia. Our latest Red Lodge experience saw a change of venue for all year levels. The Year Two and Four students shared their weekend in the New South Wales hinterland, surrounded by the beautiful Australian bush. On Easter Sunday morning, a group of students delighted in a morning bush walk that lead to a stunning cliff ledge outlook through the valley, singing together and reflecting on the gifts of Jesus and his Resurrection! In keeping with the Catholic theme, Years One and Three held their weekend in a Catholic school! One of the students, affectionately known as “Sparky” (who, co-incidentally, works at the school) finished her East Kachina dance and, on cleaning up after the dance, found her backside fire imprint proudly decorating the assembly stage floor. Needless to say, she cannot run school assemblies with a straight face anymore! On these weekends, we also welcomed Debra Laughlin to Australia for the first time. Debra taught third and fourth years. Student feedback revealed how greatly the learning experiences she facilitated were valued, and how privileged we were to receive her insightful teachings! We thought she was pretty amazing to travel so far and do what she did with a broken foot! Debra is now an adopted Aussie!

Beyond Red Lodge course teachings, our community has engaged in conscious assemblage teachings, monthly sweat lodges, a beach and BBQ social and our “Celebrating the Heartbeat of Community” nights of drumming and singing. Preparations are currently underway for our Eagle Dance, scheduled for the end of August and the expansion of our community in our online world is a priority. As winter takes hold here in Oz we look to caretaking the many Sweet Medicine initiatives on the go here ready for their emergence in Spring 2014!

DATE CLAIMERS FOR RED LODGE – Late July and August once again present a busy calendar for Sweet Medicine events and Red Lodge. For students Red Lodge session three will be held during this time for all year levels. Conscious Assemblage teachings will be held on the 29th July and an apprentice evening for those involved will be held on the 5th August.

All are welcome to attend a Lineage Address with Kristin Viken on Thursday 31st of July. This will be held in Coorabel, Northern NSW from 7:00-8:30pm. This event is open to all interested in personal growth or who want to find out more about the Sweet Medicine Australia Community and Red Lodge.

EAGLE DANCE AUSTRALIA Come Dance Your Dream Awake

Australia will hold its 4th Eagle Dance at the end of August and anyone who is interested in taking part in this powerful ceremony is invited to join us. Eagle Dance is a one day ceremony in which the participants dance to the “Tree of Life” with the intent of manifesting through dance and prayer Health, Prosperity and Abundance for Self, Life and Others.

It is an annual ceremony where we dance our intent for the next year in all areas of life -to bring balance and beauty to our lives; to engage with ourselves and hear our own prayers. The prayers are carried to the “As Above” through the branches of the tree and return to us from Great Spirit through the tree, so as we dance we activate and strengthen our personal and sacred dreams. The drum beat and songs carry us through the dance with their heartbeat. It is a magickal empowering event and indeed a dance of renewal, every year!

We will gather as a community, prepare and build the Eagle Dance arbour thus creating the container that will hold the Eagle Dance ceremony.

Then we dance. Then we celebrate!

TUPUNA • THE POWER OF THE ANCESTORS MIHIRANGI says: In Mãori tanga there are many, many, Atua, from the parents, Papa-tu-ã-nuku the Earth Mother and Rangi-nui the Sky Father, to all their children including Tãne-mahuta - Atua of the Forests, Humans and Birds, Tangaroa - Atua of the Ocean, Hine-nui-i-te-po – Goddess of the Night, Tãwhiri-mãtea - Atua of the Winds, Hine-raukatauri – Goddess of Music, to name a few. There are at least 70 main Gods and many Demi-Gods and Deities, which depends on where you live. All the Atua have their powers, personalities, stories and teachings. If we are lucky to be guided by family, friends, or elders who can pass on such knowledge, the stories of each Atua become our taonga (ancestral gifts) to adorn our Souls with mana (prestige and power) so we can walk with consciousness and with tools for our journeys ahead. This is why I am so passionate that indigenous teachings from around the world are honoured and taught in schools - or ‘assimilated’ into the education systems.

Through many trials and tribulations I have called upon my Tupuna (Ancestors) and Atua to guide me and be there for me, so there is no doubt in my mind that they exist. For example, I once went through a very hard time when I was living in Melbourne. It was 3am. I had been up all night. I was so down and depressed. On my wall in my bedroom was a Mãori painting I had of the Mother of the Pleiades. With all my being I did my Karakia (prayer)… I desperately told her “I don’t want to live in this world unless you really exist! I can’t be here unless I know that you are real and here to guide me… please show me that you exist, a sign, anything…!”. The next morning at work I noticed a big package in the mail. When I finally started opening it, it made me literally jump out of my skin! Inside was a book entitled “The Seven Sisters of the Pleiades – Stories from around the World” written by Munya Andrews, a Bardi woman from the Kimberley region of Western Australia! I sat there stunned and profusely thanking Matariki for answering my Karakia as tears of absolute joy rolled down my cheeks.

That night, I randomly opened the book to a page, which was all about my Iwi (tribe) “Ngati Maniapoto” and our Waka (canoe) “Tainui”. The front of our Waka is called Matariki and the story I had opened to was all about our people and our relationship to Matariki. I felt so blessed! So honoured to have my Karakia answered!

From that day on I have never asked for proof from any of our Atua again. The next morning I gaily trotted off to see Munya Andrews at her book launch. As soon as we saw each other we hugged, cried, and then cried some more. She told me many stories of life with her nanny in the outback learning all about the Seven Sisters and how she had come to write the book and all the stories from around the world that further validated my belief in Matariki.

Since following the guidance, teachings and healings of the Atua, my Tupuna, and with the gift of Music, I have travelled around the world, connecting with indigenous elders, brothers and sisters everywhere whose traditional stories and beliefs are just as powerful, beautiful and alive as my own. We all have access to Atuatanga, angels, or any other spiritual beings. All we have to do is ask for guidance and help - then the real journey begins … the greater the self-healing, the greater the miracles and magic, the greater the adventure, the greater the experience, and the greater the joy and happiness… This is what I have learnt.

To all the Red Hawks and those born from March 21 – April 19, a belated happy birthday! How was your birth renewal time? For those not familiar with Sun Bear’s earth Astrology, the sweet medicine of the Red Hawk is to receive with the mind to fearlessly see all the little details of life that call out for attention. Did you know? Red-tailed hawks are monogamous and may mate for life. Both sexes incubate their eggs for four to five weeks, and feed the young from the time they hatch until they leave the nest about six weeks later. True male-female balance. To all of the Beavers born from April 20 to May 20! We can learn so much about our natural selves from the animal world, including how to be more efficient and balanced with our everyday energy. Did you know? Deer are the keeper of magick, magical law and alchemy and the teacher of natural law and swiftness. Many Native Americans believed the moon, wind and rain affected the movements of deer. Scientific research indeed confirms that their movement depends on the outside temperature, moon phases and even barometric pressure. They are highly adaptable. The deer is the keeper of softness and the teacher of beauty, soft power and respect for feminine power. Remember, gentleness = strength! What do you think?
