A is for… Adventureland

Adventureland is a very popular amusment park in Iowa, and long island NY. It has over 100 rides s the tornado and the sidewinder it also features the new kokomo cove. In fact it is Iowa’s best family amusement park.

B is for… Black Squirrels

Black Squirrels are very common in Canada and most north western states. Black Squirrels are a very small squirrel, in fact one of the smallest.

C is for … Corn

Corn is Iowa’s #1 crop along with soy beans. There is about 1.1 billion bushels produced per year. We only get 55% of the corn a year. We also get about 3.6 gallons of ethanol gas a year.

D is for … Deer

Deer are one of the most common animals in Iowa. The most common are the blacktail and the whitetail.

E is for… Electricity

Iowa is one of the leaders in electricity wind drawers. Iowa is only 9.1% electricity.

F is for… Farming

Iowa is a national leader in farming like corn and soy beans. Iowa is number 2 in egg production in the country.

G is for… Gravel

Gravel is Iowa’s number 1 mineral . They produce almost 16 million tons valued at about $58 million dollars.

H is for ... Hawkeye State

Iowa’s team mascot is the hawkeye the colors are black and yellow like the state bird the goldfinch.

I is for …Immigrants

Immigrants came to Iowa in the 1800’s.They came through the United States and not many came to Iowa.

J is for… John Wayne

John Wayne’s real name is Marion Michel Morrison. He went from a farmer boy in Winterset, IA to one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

K is for… Klu Klux Klan

Klu Klux Klan was a vicious terrorist attack it happened 3 times. They adopted white costumes, robes, masks,and conical hats.

L is for… Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition by the United States of America of 828,000 square miles (2,140,000 km2) of France's claim to the territory of Louisiana in 1803. The U.S. paid 60 million francs ($11,250,000) plus cancellation of debts worth 18 million francs ($3,750,000), for a total sum of 15 million dollars (less than 3 cents per acre) for the Louisiana territory ($219 million in 2011 dollars, less than 42 cents per acre).[1][2][

M is for… Meskwaki

The Meskwaki (sometimes spelled Mesquakie or Meskwahki) are a Native American people often known to outsiders as the Fox tribe. They have often been closely linked to the Sauk people. In their own language, the Meskwaki call themselves Meshkwahkihaki, which means "the Red-Earths." Historically their homelands were in the Great Lakes region.

N is for… Neola

O is for…Oak Trees

And though only a small percentage of the oak forests remain, the oaks are still one of Iowa's leading commercial timber crops. Oaks are used as construction lumber, railroad ties, fuel, fence posts, mine props, flooring, furniture, ships and boats, tool handles, railroad cars, interior trim, barrels and kegs.

The legislation naming the Iowa state tree did not specify a particular variety of oak tree. Among the 60 or so species of oak, 13 are native to the state of Iowa.

Because a certain species of oak was not named, any species can be considered the Iowa state tree. Perhaps because it is so widely distributed throughout the state, the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is the species often identified as the state tree. According to Chris Feeley at The Department of Natural Resources Ecology and Management, the bur oak is the only native oak that is found in all Iowa counties. In the late 1800s, the bur oak was selected as the most typical tree of Iowa for planting in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

P is for… Praries

Prairies are considered part of the temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome by ecologists, based on similar temperate climates, moderate rainfall, and grasses, herbs, and shrubs, rather than trees, as the dominant vegetation type. Temperate grassland regions include the Pampas of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay as well as the steppes of Eurasia and they covered over half of Iowa.

Q is for… Quaker Oats

A cereal mill in Cedar Rapids, Iowa owned by John Stuart, his son Robert Stuart, and their partner George Douglas.

R is for… Robert Ray

Robert Dolph Ray (born September 26, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa) served as the 38th Governor of Iowa from January 16, 1969 to January 14, 1983. He served in the United States Army. He received his B.A. in Business from Drake University in 1952 and his Law Degree in 1954.[1] Following several years practicing law, Ray became Chair of the Iowa Republican Party and is credited with rebuilding it following the heavy Republican losses incurred in 1964 when Barry Goldwater headed the national Republican ticket

S is for… Soy Beans

Traditional nonfermented food uses of soybeans include soy milk, and from the latter tofu and tofu skin. Fermented foods include soy sauce, fermented bean paste, natto, and tempeh, among others. The oil is used in many industrial applications. The main producers of soy are the United States 35%. Only because it is their number 1 crop.

T is for... Tabacco

Iowa 1.36 that is the tax rate for tobacco in Iowa. The United States aren’t very high on tobacco compared to other countries. Iowa has about a third of the United States’ tobacco.

U is for… Underground Railroads

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century black slaves in the United States to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause.

V is for… Vietnam War Protests

The movement against the war started in about 1964 and grew strength throughout the years. The U.S. became polarized with Vietnam involvment.

W is for… War

War has been a big part of Iowa. Especially the Vietnam war.

X is for… X-Ray

Iowa is the state that discovered X-Rays. Today they have been one of the most useful medical tools.

Y is for… Yucca Plants

They are very popular in Iowa. You can get them at many gardening stores.

Z is for… Blank Park Zoo

In 1963, Mr. A.H. Blank donated $150,000 ($916,000 in 2005 dollars) for the construction of a children's zoo on decommissioned Fort Des Moines property. The Des Moines Children’s Zoo was officially opened on May 8, 1966. It was originally designed around nursery rhymes and included a castle with moat, a replica of Noah's Ark, petting zoo and miniature railroad.
