7 Keller Easterling Archipelago of Protocols is a much more unusual document than it may first appear to be. In these pages, Aristide Antonas presents five spatial ideas for Athens—collective roof terraces, outdoor rooms, communal work tables, sectional layers of urban space and networks of vacant shops—but the book is not a monograph of design projects. The ideas deploy all the skills associated with architectural training and practice, but they stake out territory outside the typical practices of the profession. Similarly, while they are designs for urban space, they do not suggest policies for urban planning. Together, the protocols appear to create a small list, but they really call for an act of endlessly listing. They are explicitly authored and represented, yet they are also deliberately designed to relinquish authorship to others over time. In the same way that this document is not a monograph, the protocols that are the subject of the book are not fixed, finite things, but instructions for how to make evolving things.
