A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR The baby boomers had Vietnam, the millennials had the collapse of the global economy, and my peers and myself – a generation in the middle – had that dusty, amorphous quagmire of cash, carnage, and human life known as “Operation Iraqi Freedom,” “Operation New Dawn,” or - to those embracing its open-endedness - the simple bark of a four-letter, all caps IRAQ. A mysterious conflict, one with ever-moving goalposts and ever-changing objectives, one that upended the concept of “winning” so thoroughly that even the most staunch proponents of black-and-white jingoism were eventually forced to find a mirror and give themselves that long, uncomfortable look called nuance.

“War is hell” is widely attributed to William Tecumseh Sherman in 1870 (or thereabouts) but, as of the early aughts, the phrase no longer applies. Purgatory, perhaps, but hell? Far from it. Our boys, after all, were just passin’ through: Operation Iraqi Freedom lasted forty-two days. Operation New Dawn was over May 1st, 2003. IRAQ, on the other hand, well…

Last I checked we’re still there.

War - the post-boomer, pre-iPhone generation will confirm - is easy. Occupation is hell.

And this play, with a bit of help from our good friend the Colonel, is my attempt to unpack that.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR On September 21, 2012, The Group Rep’s Artistic Director (my mentor), Larry Eisenberg, emailed me a script he thought I would be interested in. He said if I liked it, I should work on mounting it at our theatre as a Monday night staged reading. I read the script and was floored by the material. It was highly sophisticated, dark, funny, and the subject matter was very timely. I felt the style and structure was ahead of its time, but also, really reminiscent of some of my favorite writing styles and themes in film and stage. At the time I read the script, I had only directed two shows in my

life; both were farces, a style I love but it wasn’t the genre I wanted to be known for. I was really interested in exploring dark comedy, absurdism, and tragedy. Gus Krieger’s The Armadillo Necktie is a great combo of it all, and then some. The play has a lot of comedy, accented by dark undertones, heavy thematic imagery, and political metaphors and commentaries on American war. It was a breathtaking read for me, and a great piece in which to make my transition as an artist. I wanted to immediately sink my teeth into this project. It was so different from anything I had seen produced at the GRT to date. I had been a member of the company for almost two years at the time, and I wanted to start bringing a new flavor to the table; something edgy, controversial, diverse, and something that would shine a harsh light on some very real topics. Larry connected me with Gus, and we met for coffee to discuss the project. I’d be lying if I said I played it cool and was totally confident in my approach. I was frightened, intimidated, and nervous as hell. Why would this brilliant mind agree to let me direct his project? All I’ve done is farce. Well, I did something right, because he was into it, and we started collaborating. Our journey involved many discussions, a lot of emailing back-and-forth, and many struggles with casting (mostly due to scheduling). We were both bouncing off other projects of our own constantly, and pushing the presentation date further and further. We still kept looking ahead and hoping we could mount it, but so much time began to pass us, we both continued to be busy, so we just had to place it on the back-burner. Eventually, four years passed, a work relationship turned to friendship, our friendship turned to love (yes, we eventually fell in love), I directed many more farces (I can’t get away from them), and I collaborated with Gus on other projects. We were settled into our new relationship when Larry approached us in January 2015 and encouraged us to try Armadillo again. Surprisingly, we got a cast together and scheduled a few rehearsals quite easily. A staged-reading (finally!) and a few drafts later, we pitched the production to the Artistic Council of the GRT, and here we are; fully produced, a set of our own, Gus’ dialogue spoken aloud, his characters explored and interpreted, and I was finally challenged as a director. The moral to the story is to start dating your playwright and everything will fall into place. I’M TOTALLY KIDDING! That part was just a happy coincidence. But, really, I am happy we didn’t shelve The Armadillo Necktie entirely. We worked hard to get to this point, and I couldn’t be prouder of our efforts. This experience has pushed me to be a better director, learn some new lessons, take some new roads, and never stop trying. When you have passion behind a project, it makes the process that much more rewarding, and I have had my heart set on this show for four years… It’s my baby and I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I have enjoyed working on it.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The acting company began in May 1973 with a rag--tag group of 12 actors performing scenes for audiences in a Laundromat--turned 36-seat theatre on Van Ness Boulevard. When Lonny Chapman first entered that theatre, the magic began. Here was an Artistic Director searching for a theatre and a theatre company searching for an artistic director. The match was perfect and The Group Repertory Theatre was born with Lonny Chapman at the helm. The first show, Round Dance, an adaptation of Schnitzler’s La Ronde, was an immediate hit, and The Group Rep was on its way. By 1974, with the growth in the number of productions and additional company members, as well as having acquired its professional status with Equity, Chapman suggested that a bigger space was needed. A new 58--seat venue was rented on Magnolia Blvd., which began playing to sold--out houses. The Group Rep’s growth and success required yet a larger venue. In 1980, Chapman secured the current Burbank and Vineland location, which was renovated into its present 90-seat configuration. The Company honored Mr. Chapman in 1999 with a naming ceremony, making the theatre officially The Lonny Chapman Theatre. He continued to serve as the Company’s Artistic Director until his death in 2007. Lonny Chapman’s artistic vision for the Company spanned more than three decades. The Group Rep is a permanent Company of actors, directors, writers and technicians. The Company has produced over 300 shows, including dozens of World Premieres. We now have over 80 active Company members, from those with

notable careers to those building new careers.

The Company has been home to untold numbers -- many of whom continue to enjoy successful careers in the entertainment industry today. The Group Rep looks forward to welcoming new, passionate artists to its distinguished roster. In addition to professional stage productions, The Group Rep gives back to the community with its Annual Foster/Cancer Children’s Holiday Party. Its Participating Actor and Technical Associates (PATA) program provides internship opportunities for aspiring artists in the creative and technical fields. Past graduates of The Group Rep’s PATA program include such notables as Sean Penn and Jennifer Tilly. In June of 2010, Larry Eisenberg and Chris Winfield were appointed Co-Artistic Directors of the theatre. Both men are long--time members of The Group Rep. They have the experience, passion and creativity to maintain the Company’s exceptional reputation within the Los Angeles Community and to guide it to even greater heights. With you, our audience, we continue to strive to fulfill the vision of Lonny Chapman. His Vision? “First to entertain, then to illuminate the human condition, and to never be boring.”

The audience, play and actor have equal parts in this exciting venture.

We Welcome You To The Lonny Chapman Theatre For Many Years To

Come!
