STEP ONE DEFINE THE BASIC ISSUE

Should teenagers care more about their education?

STEP TWO BUILDING YOUR CASE FOR THE BASIC ISSUE

STATEMENT

1. Education paves the way to a better future.

2. Plays a key role in developing students into good, responsible human

beings.

TILT FACTORS

STEP THREE BUILDING YOUR CASE AGAINST THE BASIC ISSUE

STATEMENT

1. Studying and preparing for the future can be stressful to students.

2. Topics taught in school may not be useful in their

everyday lives.

STEP FOUR-REASONED RESPONSE JUDGEMENT

- Education is extremely important in establishing a good future. Although it may come with some hardships, it is all apart of the path to success.

Our group chose this topic because it personally affects us. As students of the Perth Amboy High School S.T.E.M campus, we continually witness students not care about their education. They simply treat this important subject that heavily determines our future as a game that is completed the last day of school. We want to change this careless mindset not only among students of Perth Amboy High School, but of students around the world. We believe education holds great value, and students need to understand its importance. Furthermore, students need to treat education with respect and use it as an outlet to grow as an intellect. We simply want students to care about education.

Why we choose this topic?

The article, “Perspectives/Who Cares? And Who Wants To Know?”, sheds light on the alarming statistics surrounding students’ interest in learning and graduating. According to the article 12th graders have been losing interest in learning very rapidly over the years. Evidently, in 2000 only 28% of 12th grade students were reported saying that their schoolwork was meaningful and interesting, which went down from 40% who said the opposite in 1983. The article ultimately shows that students are losing interest in school because they find less meaning in what they’re being taught, which coincides with increasing dropout rates.

Reasons Why Teenagers Don't Do Well in School- Of course, there are reasons as to why students don’t do well in school. It’s not because they don’t care. Sometimes, other factors come into play such as, exhaustion, family concerns, being over-committed, their beliefs, and school’s workload in general. - Because of these concerns, students tend to just give up on their education. Schools and parents attempt to help with counseling programs, youth camps and structure, but issues may still interfere with school. But, isn’t it important to persevere to become successful?

Page 13: By Jaden M. Diana N. Loendi N. Xoe N.. STEP ONE DEFINE THE BASIC ISSUE Should teenagers care more about their education? STEP TWO BUILDING YOUR CASE FOR

The school system, community, and local municipal government should get involved in the

issue over education. Why?

- Because of the lack of care in our education, students are beginning to drop out. This leads to

the bad reputation given to Perth Amboy students and it’s community.

-Students are getting the idea that their futures do not depend on how well you do in school.

Page 14: By Jaden M. Diana N. Loendi N. Xoe N.. STEP ONE DEFINE THE BASIC ISSUE Should teenagers care more about their education? STEP TWO BUILDING YOUR CASE FOR

- In order to make students understand that education is very important, we need the help

of the community to spread the word about the importance of being in school.

-We need the municipal government to step up in helping school systems to receive more

opportunities for their students.

-Finally, we need to make sure that our educational system is reliable and can fully

prepare its students to reach success.

Exaggeration- The bodies of the people of the people are exaggerated. They are stretched out and look silly.

Labeling- The cartoon is labeled with “No, it’s not my diploma. I dropped out. It’s my birth certificate.”

Irony- It is ironic because usually people hang their diploma not a birth certificate.

Analogy- It is analogous to people who have nothing to display because they dropped out of school. Also its is similar, to that of those who work cash registers because of the

Symbolism- It symbolizes the lack of care and increased drop out rate in America.

How To Encourage Teens To Finish High SchoolBy: Denise Witmer

- When teens begin to slack in school, sometimes there are important issues behind why they are not doing well. Things to remember when trying to get them to finish school, while at the same time addressing the matter is:

1. Talk to your teen and get to the heart of the matter.2. Take each one of these problems in order and address them with your teen. 3. Follow through on a daily basis at first, then weekly if things are going well. 4. Keep on top of this issue.

Tip: If there are other problems that are keeping your teen from doing his best in school, you’ll need to address them first.

After analyzing the responses for our survey we realized that most students are motivated to do well in school on their own, without receiving rewards in return. Although that was true, all students who took the survey also said that they wouldn’t mind being rewarded for being good students. All students (except for one) have responded that they would like to receive money in return for getting good grades. Based on these results we can conclude that giving money to students who maintain high grades would be the most effective policy to correct the educational problems in our schools.

What Is The Current Policy Being Used?

- At Perth Amboy High School, the current policy being used is typical in many other high schools.

- Students are just expected to do well and receive help by going to the Learning Center and receiving afterschool tutoring. They are expected to be the

ones asking for help.

ALTERNATIVE POLICY #1- In order to get students to care about their education, the staff members at the school can…

Establish good relationships with their students early on in the

school year. “If you invest enough chips in your "goodwill account" with certain

students, you can make a "withdrawal" for which you demand better behavior, more academic effort, and so on.”

Advantages & Disadvantages of Alternative Policy #1.

Advantages: - Students will be able to comfortably ask questions.- Teachers will better understand students personally, in order to come up with a solution on how to help them.- Students more readily accept the rules and procedures and the disciplinary actions that follow their violations

Disadvantages: - Students may reach a point where they are too comfortable and decide to stop doing work.

 ALTERNATIVE POLICY #2

Another way to get teens to be more invested in their education andfuture is to create incentives. By creating an incentive, the students will have something that motivates them to strive for good grades. Students will begin to care more about their education because they are awarded.

The incentive can be anything. Schools can reward students with money or other prizes, like a pizza party, or a special designated lunch table.

An advantage of this would be that more kids would care about school and their education because there is a reward for doing well.

The disadvantages of this policy would be that students are being taught to value the the rewards than the actual education.

“A large number of schools participating in a pay-for-grades program have seen test scores in reading and math go up by almost 40 percentage points.”

Page 25: By Jaden M. Diana N. Loendi N. Xoe N.. STEP ONE DEFINE THE BASIC ISSUE Should teenagers care more about their education? STEP TWO BUILDING YOUR CASE FOR

   ALTERNATE POLICY #3

In order to get students to care about their education teachers, as well as the school, can implement the statement that doing well in school will lead to ones success. They can teach the students that in order to be successful in life they need to care about their education. To ensure that the students will listen, the school can hold several events promoting this idea of the gateway to success. Furthermore, the school can advertise this notion through a slogan, posters posted throughout the school and daily morning announcements.

Advantages: Students will learn what the gateway is to becoming successful and take school more seriously. Also, this will lead to an increase in the schools testing average and perhaps a higher graduation rate.

Disadvantages: Students will not take this message seriously and treat it as a joke. There is a chance that students will feel the need to rebel against this notion, only causing more chaos among schools.
