Us Invasion of Panama

Also known as Operation Just Cause. December 1989 - January 1990 10 years after Torrijos–Carter Treaties. Torrijos-Carter Treaty was an

agreement that The US would hand over the Panama Canal by 2000.

The lives of the approximately 35,000 US citizens living there were threatened and a U.S. Marine had been killed.

Democracy & human rights in Panama. Drugs Trafficking in Panama (which was helping drugs enter

the U.S.) Protecting The Torrijos–Carter Treaties.

Manuel Noriega

Soldier and Politician of Panama. Taken Prisoner of War in 1989 during Operation

Just Cause. Supported Torrijos (not officially President of Panama but known

as Supreme Chief of Government).

Known for heavy drug trafficking.

American Military Casualties: 23 killed; 325 wounded. Panamanian Military Casualties: 205 killed; 1,236

captured by U.S. forces.

Noriega’s Capture

Operation Nifty Package. Navy Seals sank M.N.’s boat & jet – Killing 4/ 9 wounded.

$1-million reward for his capture. M.N. surrendered to US military on Jan. 3 1990.
