A BLOCK on royal wedding streetparties that could disrupt throughtraffic has been met with dismayand disgust in tiny Bishopstone.

The application for Main Streetwas rejected by Bucks CountyCouncil even though closures weregiventhe green light fortheMillen-nium and Queens Golden Jubilee

celebrations in 2002,New stipulations do not allow

parties on C class roads, where

most people want them.Mark Bale, who lives in the vil-

llage, said: On the original roadclosure form it didnt stipulate

these new terms. Most of the roads in villages in

Aylesbury Vale are C class roads

unless you live in a cul-de-sac intown you wont be able to have aparty.

Asfar asI amawareBucks istheonly county council doing this.

Guidelines on the countys web-site state that road closures willonly be considered on unclassifiedroads, as closures of A, B and C

roads will have a serious impact ontraffic flow.

    A County Hall spokesman said:

The traffic regulation order cover-ing royal wedding street parties onunclassified roads only was madeon March 17 with the agreementof all agencies, having gone out toconsultation on February 23.

Mr Bale says the strict rules ex-plain why only three out of nineapplications have been granted in

    Buckinghamshire.In neighbouring Hertfordshire

    nearly all 231 applications received

by the county council have beengranted.

A Herts Highways spokesmansaid: We are not taking into con-sideration the classification ofroadsand arelookingat eachappli-cation on its own merits.

In a letter to Buckinghamshireshead of transport, Jim Stevens,

Buckingham MP John Bercowurged a rethink.

ONE of the biggest namesin motor racing this weekbacked a clampdown whichhas seen village speed limitsslashed in half in the Vale.

Three times worldchampion Sir JackieStewart gave his thumbsup to County Hall after

speed limits were slashedfrom 60mph to 30mph on anumber of busy roads on

    Thursday.

The 71-year-old, knownthroughout his career asThe Flying Scot, said he

welcomed the move to bringin 30mph limits throughAshendon, Boarstall,Chilton, Dorton, Lugershall,Nether/Lower Winchendonand Upper Winchendon.

A revamp has also seen30mph zones extended inBrill, Chearsley, Cuddington,Long Crendon, WaddesdonsWarmstone Lane, Weedonand Worminghall.

Sir Jackie, who spenthis career zooming around

tracks at more than 160mph,said: It sounds unusualcoming from me, but speed

    does kill.What people seldom

understand is that if you hita solid object at 30mph, itsthe same impact as fallingfrom a third storey window.

Although a motoristmight get frustrated, in thewrong situation it could bedangerous.

If its going to save a life, its more than worthwhiledoing it.

    Speed limits have also

been reduced to 40mph onthe B4011 at Foresters.

A party from the past: Bishopstone was able to stage a community celebration in 2000, above, but this year the mood is much more sombre after the road closure refusal.
