Oceans The oceans are in danger because people

Food Chains In oceans, as on land, there is a natural interconnection of

creatures that forms a kind of food chain. Diatoms are microscopic plants that make their own food

from sunlight.Zooplankton are tiny sea animals, such as krill, copepods,

medusa jellyfish, and crab larvae.Small fish might include mackerel, herring, and basking

sharks, as well as crustaceans (crab, shrimp, lobster), mollusks (clams, scallops) and squid.

Large fish might include swordfish, tuna, octopus, and shark.

Killer whales eat other whales and seals, as well as fish.

Human InteractionsOcean pollution is a very large problem. Ocean

pollution can come from a number of sources. Plastics and rubbish can float into our oceans and suffocate animals.

That is why scientists are alarmed by the increasingly frequent reports of jellyfish swarms worldwide. Scientists warn that the increase is a signal of the declining health of the world's oceans. The jellyfish explosion is likely the result of several factors: overfishing of jellyfishes' natural predators; rising sea temperatures, which contribute to faster and more successful breeding in jellyfish; and pollution that reduces oxygen levels in coastal waters.

Fun FactsOceans clearly play an essential role in life on

Earth; yet because of their vastness, humans have tended to use their waters as dumping grounds for many waste materials. This practice has increased as land areas for such wastes diminish. Oceans also receive all of the pollutants that are fed to them by the rivers of the world. Even when ships are not actively engaged in dumping wastes, they are themselves sources of pollution; most notable are the giant tankers that have caused numerous massive oil spills.
