There are a number of reasons that you should use WordPress for your site creation but here are just a few:

It is easy to install and use;

There is no complicated code to learn

The WordPress community is massive with developers creating free addons in the form of plugins and themes every day – for free use by WordPress users

It is free to use!

Before you install WordPress

You will need to get a domain name. I like to buy my domain names from GoDaddy or Namecheap but check around you might find another registrar that you like better.

When I buy my domains I like to get a coupon for the domain registrar. A couple of bucks does not make much difference when you have 1 or two names but when you have over 400 it all adds up!!! Try these sites for coupons FatWallet, Coupon Cache, Couponok or Webmaster Desk.

Before you buy your domain name you should do some research. You need a domain name that is SEO friendly or keyword rich.

You can use the free tool at Webconfs to choose a domain name that might be suitable for your site. Simply type in a keyword that describes your niche and choose the extension that you would like to use. It is preferable to choose a “com” extension. Click “submit” and results will be returned suggesting domain names for your site. Now sometimes the Webconfs site is “down” so here are a few more places to look for keyword rich domain names Domain Tools and Name Tumbler.

Once you have found the domain name that you would like to use go to GoDaddy, Namecheap or your registrar of choice and order the domain. At the checkout you can usually apply the coupon code that you obtained from the coupon site. Click to “Update Cart” and you can pay for your domain name.

It is best to have your domain registrar and web hosting separate. I choose to use GoDaddy as my domain registrar and Hostgator as my web host. If you don't wish to use Hostgator use a web host that is WordPress friendly like Blue Host.

When you sign up for hosting your web host will give you the names of your nameservers. There are usually two names but there might be four. It will look something like this:

ns315.hostgator.com

ns316 hostgator.com

Your web host will also provide you with a username and password for your hosting account. Write all this information down somewhere safe for future reference.

If you are not sure about anything ask your web host by submitting a support ticket at their help desk.

Now we need to tell our newly purchased domain name that our web site will be living with our web host.

To do this we go to our domain registrar. I am using GoDaddy so to change this information (which is called changing your DNS settings) I would log into my GoDaddy Account by clicking on the “My Account” link as shown in the screenshot below.

If you are using GoDaddy then choose My Products from the left hand menu and Domains from the drop down list

When you click on Domains all the domains that you have registered with the registrar will display

Then you just need to tick the box for the domain that you want to change the DNS on

You will see a row of icons. Just click on the icon that says “Nameservers” and you will be taken to the next screen

You will see that the fields are already filled in with your domain registrar’s nameservers information. Delete this and insert the domain nameservers information that your web host has provided to you. Click “OK” to finish.

Sometimes it takes a while for this information to change in the system. To be safe I like to change my DNS 24 hours before I install WordPress.

Installing WordPress using Fantastico and CPanel

Most web hosts use CPanel today which makes it easy to install scripts.

CPanel has a very user friendly interface. Also, if you ever need any help on the left hand side of the screen the documentation for CPanel is usually available for you to view.

Before you install WordPress on your domain you should, of course, change your Domain Name Servers (DNS) to point to your host (if you have not already done so or if your domain registrar is different from your web host).

If you are uncertain of this process contact your domain registrar or check out the free videos on You Tube.

To install WordPress just go to your CPanel. Your CPanel address will usually be given to you by your host when you open your hosting account. If you do not know your CPanel address email the Support staff at your web host. Usually, your CPanel can be accessed by going to:

www.yourdomainname.com/cpanel

or

www.yourdomainname.com/2082

Log in to your CPanel with your user name and password.

The first thing that I like to do is to create an email account for my new website. You can do this easily in Cpanel.

Click on the icon in Cpanel that says “Mail”.

On the next screen click on “add/remove/manage accounts”

Page 6: by Leanne King This ebook is brought to you by Scott Parat ... · can usually apply the coupon code that you obtained from the coupon site. ... Hostgator as my web host. If you don't

After you click on “add/remove/manage accounts” you will be presented with the next screen. At the bottom of the screen it will say “add account” click on that.

Now choose your email address. Most hosts allow you to have a number of email addresses so you might want to have one for sales, one for mail, a personal one, one for support desk topics.

Then choose a password for your email accounts.

Write all your email accounts and passwords down somewhere safe where you will remember and click “create”.

I hate checking email so I forward all my emails to one account that I look at all the time. This way the visitor sees a professional email address but I don't spend time flitting between email accounts keeping up to date.

To forward your email accounts to one email address you just need to go back to CPanel home.

Click the “Mail” icon (just like last time!)

Then click “Forwarders”

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click “Add Forwarder”

The next screen will allow you to input your information.

Just type in the name of your email address that you just created. Remember to choose your domain name from the drop down menu.

Add in the email address that you want your mail forwarded to. I have added in “[email protected]

Then click “Add Forwarder” and you are done!

Repeat the same steps with any other email accounts that you may have just created.

At the bottom of the CPanel you should see a happy smiley face icon which says "Fantastico" . This is your new best friend.

Click on the icon for Fantastico.

A screen will show you all the scripts that Fantastico can install. On the left hand side you will see "WordPress" click WordPress

You will then be taken to the next screen to install WordPress.

Click on “new installation”. Installing WordPress is an easy 3 step process with Fantastico and should take less than 5 minutes.

After you click on “new installation” you will be presented with the next screen.

Choose A Username and Password

Now you need to choose a username and password. This will be the username and password that you use to access the back office of your WordPress site.

You should ensure that your username and password is different from the one on cpanel. Write them down so you will remember them in the future.

Choose usernames and passwords that are easy for you to remember but difficult for someone else.

Choose a Nickname

The admin Nickname is the name that will show in WordPress next to posts etc authored by you.

It will also show on the welcome message that you get when you log into WordPress each time. You can see that the nickname that I chose for myself was my name “Leanne”. You can choose anything you want like “Marketing Genius”, “Editor”, “Admin” ...whatever tickles your fancy or would look cool on posts that you are authoring.

Complete the Email Details

The next step is to complete the email particulars.

Now, remember the email address that we created earlier? You wrote it down right? With the password? This is the spot where you put that information. This is so you can blog by email so there will be no excuse not to keep your site up to date.

Site Name And Description

You can add in the name of your site and the slogan/tagline/description that you want to show on your site or you can do this later from the WordPress back office. If you want to do it later, just leave it blank. If you are using a header graphic that has your site name and slogan on it then don't add this text here. You will just get a double up.

Mail Server

Finally, put your email username, password and pop server info in.

If you do not know your pop server info - email your host. It usually is your domain name eg. mail.yourdomain.com

Page 11: by Leanne King This ebook is brought to you by Scott Parat ... · can usually apply the coupon code that you obtained from the coupon site. ... Hostgator as my web host. If you don't

You need to put this information in or otherwise the installation process will not be completed.

Starting the Install Process

Click “Install WordPress” and you will be taken to the next step in the installation process.

The next step tells you the name of the data base that has been created for your installation, the domain name, any subdirectory name where you have installed WordPress and gives you the url to your new website.

Check the information is correct and if so click “Finish Installation”

Check The Details

The final screen will show you the username and password you have chosen to access your new WordPress blog. It will also give you the full url to your admin (back office) area. You have the option to either bookmark this information or email it to an address. I always email the information to my favourite email address and print it out.

The reason that I like to print out this information is that I can't remember which data base goes with which WordPress install as quickly as looking at this sheet. If you have a lot of websites on the one shared hosting account I recommend that you also do this. Saves heaps of time in the future and takes the guesswork away.

If you want to email the information just type in your email address and click “send email”.

Easy.

The confirmation email may land in your junk/spam folder as the sender is shown as “unknown” the subject line will usually be “WordPress Installation on (the name of your domain)

Logging into WordPress

There are two ways to log into your new WordPress site.

The first way is via your website. If you have just installed WordPress no doubt the Kubrick theme (which is the blue default WordPress theme) is displaying. At the

bottom of the sidebar you will see the word “login”.

Click on “Login”. You will then be met with your login screen. You just need to type in your user name and password, check the box that says “remember me” and click “Login”.

If you are using WordPress 2.7 this is what your login screen will look like:

Type in your username and password and tick the little box below that says "remember me" and click "login".

Congratulations you are now in your back office!

OR

Sometimes, you (or someone else) may decide that you do not want the meta data (ie the login info etc) on your WordPress site. If that is the case, you need to log in by way of your url. This is the second way that you can login to your back office.

When we installed WordPress earlier the final screen in the installation process set out the url for your admin area. If you emailed that to yourself, go and have a look now at what it is.

It should be something like: http://yourdomainname.com/wp-admin

If you enter your url into your browser like this: http://yourdomainname.com/wp-admin you will be taken to your login screen.
